“Luis in the shop by Santa Domingo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2013

We went to Oaxaca specifically to buy rugs. We had been to Teotitlan on a previous trip and wanted more rugs. We happened upon Luis's shop. After listening to what we wanted, Luis assured us he had what we wanted in the village. The next day he picked us up at our hotel and took us to his home in Teotitlan where we met other weavers and found our rugs. He spent the whole day showing us around nearby villages and generally introducing us to the area. We were very satisfied with the price of the rugs although they have increased since the first ones we bought. It was a delightful day and we would certainly recommend this shop and family of weavers.

“Very satisfied customer”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2013

We visited Isaac's studio (Bug in a Rug) on the recommendations of both our guidebook and a fellow guest (Mexican) in our Oaxaca hotel. We were very happy with our experience at the studio--we enjoyed a demonstration of rug making from wool spinning, to dying, to weaving--and we bought a couple of carpets that we like very much. It's true that these carpets were more expensive than some we saw elsewhere, but--even though we are not experts--we could identify quality differences. For example, at the marketplace in town we saw similar designs, cheaper, but the quality was noticeably rougher.

Also, we did bargain, in a friendly way, and felt good about the price we got.

Finally, I notice that some people are saying these rugs are for hanging, not for the floor. Well, we're using ours on the floor. We don't wear shoes at home, so that helps keep them in good shape. I expect they'll last as well as our handmade rugs from other parts of the world.

“Know what to ask for!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2012

I read some of the reviews here and many lament the quality of the Vasquez family's tapetes and say that they just re-sell the work of other families. That is partly true. They have a lot of the same stuff you can find anywhere else made by who-knows-who. But--and here's the big BUT--if you ask to see the signed pieces, you'll see quality. These are the pieces that made Isaac Vasquez and his family famous and they are most assuredly done with natural dyes. Of course, if you want quality expect to pay for it. That's the way of the world and don't expect any different here. Not only that, considering the time and effort that goes into making the signed pieces, they are well worth the price you pay for them. Also keep in mind, they're not rugs. They're meant to be hung on the wall. Again, to reiterate, I'm talking about the signed pieces.

“Learn a little before hand for naturally-dyed rugs”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 January 2009

I am a weaver and naturally dyer and have visited the Bug in the Rug. In my opinion, none of the Vasquez rugs are naturally-dye and they vary widely in quality. You can find high quality rugs there, but also some that are not. In fairness to the gallery, I found very few rugs in the village that I could be sure where naturally-dye - I only found three galleries! So, let the buyer beware. If you like the rugs and don't care it they are naturally-dyed, buy them and enjoy them. If you want a naturally-dyed rug, learn a little before you go about dyes and quality. It will be worth the effort to buy a rug you can cherish. But be prepared to pay more for the real deal.

“Wonderful stop”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2008

We were lucky enough to meet Isaac and hear him talk about how he makes rugs. He meets visitors in a central patio that is part of his store. He talked a lot about the dyes, which are natural. He is a very nice man. They had a good selection of rugs. We didn't negotiate on the price and I can't really say if they are cheaper than the shops in Oaxaca ... but meeting him was worth it.

We took the second class bus to Teotitlan de Valle, which let us off at the highway and then we got a taxi into town. It was easy to navigate. The Bug in the Rug shop is on Av Hidalgo 30 which is on your left as you're walking towards the center of town. You can hire a guide to take you there too.
