Many times people talk about the character of places they stay. And that is what one seeks these days, provided the basics are met. However, Hostel de la Noria, although definitely offering character is missing the basics: the ability to have a good night’s sleep and a decent shower.
Check-in: The person at the front desk had our details and we were immediately shown to our room. The staff was helpful with carrying our luggage. Unfortunately,
Room: We were travelling with our baby which means that we have a baby stroller but we got a room of the first floor, which meant a daily routine of climbing several stairs. The room was in what seemed to be an extended part of the original building as when reaching the first floor, we would do a left U-turn and towards a lengthy corridor, go down a few extra steps and then turn left again. The room was in fact at the corner of the building (room 222) facing on the street. It had two large beds and with the baby cot in, we were in shortage of space. The beds were very hard and not comfortable to sleep. The biggest problem of the room was sound-proofing. There was none. The street below is quite busy and it felt like the oncoming cars were going to pass between the two beds. That meant we had to have the windows closed all the time, which made no difference on the sound department but had an adverse effect on the room temperature and air. The air-conditioning was a must, although it gets fairly fresh in the evening. The second big short-coming of the room was the shower. The plumbing was just horrible. When my wife first tried to have a shower I thought there were road-works starting at the same time. Only it was the pipes rattling like a machine gun in the wall. Although we mentioned that to the front desk, they just looked at us, without any response whatsoever or an effort to change us room. Although we stayed there for three nights we tried to be in the room for as short a time as possible – something neither intended nor convenient when travelling with a baby. I had a look one morning on some other internal rooms that were cleaned up and looked very small.
Breakfast: The breakfast room is located ground floor. It is beautifully setup but suffers from too much street noise. The service was quick but with no real effort - we were given vouchers when we checked in and the waiters were asking for the vouchers before start doing anything. The “fresh” juice felt a bit diluted with processed orange juice and the standard American breakfast was ok.
Courtyard, swimming pool and location: The courtyard is really nice and also they offer free wi-fi which was very welcome. In fact we saw many locals meeting there all carrying their laptops and having a drink while talking business. It made the place more real and lively but it’s far from a resting place, again due to the significant street noise. There is a separate courtyard with what appeared to be a not-used swimming pool, which is quite small and also in a pretty shadowy place – it didn’t look inviting from the first floor so didn’t try to find our way there. The location, just two blocks away from the Zocalo is really excellent. It’s easy to pop-in and out and thus a good point to explore the city on foot.
Overall: Despite its good location and charming courtyard, we had a very poor sleeping experience and the overall response from the staff was non-existent. If you don’t mind the street noise or can secure an internal room and have more luck with the shower, then it’s an ok place for a night or two. Else, I’d opt for something else, even if it’s a block or two further away from the Zocalo.

Room Tip: Avoid room 222 and in fact all rooms that face the street.

Clean enough and pleasant courtyard but the service was lacking and the beds are quite hard for the price. On the upside it is very close to the Zocalo and other points of interest in the city.

Room Tip: to avoid street noise you would need to ask for a room on the north or west side of the hotel

I think it is very expensive for what they offer. I have no problems at all in the hotel, but the room was very small. Food was good. Nothing much to say about it.

We stayed here for one night and it was the most welcome, beautiful hotel I had ever seen. This may have been in part because our hotel for the night before was cold, dirty and generally horrible. But even with this in consideration the Hostal del la Noria was an absolutely beautiful hotel.

I will admit it's not the cheapest place, but neither was the other hotel I am afraid I can no longer find or remember the name of.

From the service to the well decorated and comfortable room there really is nothing to complain about.

Room Tip: It's such a peaceful hotel, take time to relax if you need to here in the courtyard.

Our stay for 9 nights was pleasurable and morning breakfast was my favorite part. Wonderful choices and good food. Our room was on the 3rd floor so lots of climbing each day. You could often hear noise from the lower floor rooms in the middle of the night which was disturbing. Very hard beds but we adjusted. The location is perfect, just 2 blocks from the zocolo. The staff was fine and the cleaning lady was wonderful. Good stay overall.
