Have visited ruins all over Mexico. This has to be ranked in at least the top 3. Amazing that it is right in the city! Huge ruins, well preserved and not overrun by tourists.

“Interesting archaeological site with some unique features”
Reviewed 22 November 2013

An interesting site, with fantastic views over the surrounding valleys. Interesting buildings and ball court, and some fascinating carvings (original and copies) which seem to show an interest in, and understanding of, various medical conditions. Visit later in the day when it is quieter and th lighting is better!

“Amazing site and a very good tour”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

We used Suntour to take us to Monte Alban and provide the tour guide and it was well worth it. The site is high above the city of Oaxaca and is very well preserved and curated. I did not have a chance to visit the museum on site.

“Ancient ruins”
Reviewed 14 November 2013

These ancient ruins have withstood weathering. Compared with Mitla in the area and other ruins in other parts of Mexico, they seem a bit plain as there is very little decoration. However, they are well worth the time spent touring them. It is very helpful to have a guide to explain them and the historical background.

“Ancient history”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

A visit to Monte Alban takes you back thousands of years to learn about the lives of the Zapotec people who lived in the area. How they built, caught water, grew food, worshipped and lived. The site is mostly "restored" having been "discovered" in the early 1920's and excavated. All the findings are in the Museum in town. It's hot - take water to drink and wear a hat and very good walking shoes. There are many steep steps to go up and down but the views are worth it. There is also a small museum of original objects, a gift shop and cafe.
