“WE were worried as we normally do not eat street food in Mexico.”
Reviewed 12 January 2014

We took a cab but walked back. We enjoyed each dish that we had, but since we do not read Spanish we did a lot of pointing. We were not disappointed. Great place for lunch.

“Good for vegetarians”
Reviewed 11 January 2014

A little outside the center of town. We took a taxi there. They have unusual drinks, all containing corn, which is the ingredient in which they specialize. You can watch the cook knead the masa, make the tortilla, cook it and fill it. A fun meal.

“Authentic!”
Reviewed 31 December 2013

With a reverence for heirloom corn and fillings de casuela (casserole style), this restaurant is a must for foodies. One of the two restaurants mentioned in the tome "Where Chefs Eat." It's the real thing and tasty too. Humble decor, low prices and fantastic minted lemonade.

“Authentic Mexican food, cheap, tasty”
Reviewed 30 November 2013

Itanoni uses the corn grown historically around Oaxaca, unlike the U.S. corn coming into Mexico which is cheaper and has less taste. They make your tortillas by hand and cook them to your order on their clay "grill." You order a few small items, always tasty and cheap. They have great coffee and juices squeezed to your order. This is just a great place for lunch --- friendly service, tasty food, and cheap.

“Disappointed.”
Reviewed 4 November 2013

I'd been looking forward to visiting Itanoni after reading about their vision and mission. Perhaps I just ordered the wrong items, but both seemed dry and without much flavor. I ordered the Huevo Espiritu .. a dry, hard cooked egg between hierba Santa leaves on a very dry tortilla. Also ordered a taco with potato and chile de agua. Perhaps I've become accustomed to potatoes being moist and fried, but this taco had cubes of boiled russet-type potato with very little chile and no other apparent seasoning. The table sauces were good and I lashed them on both items but had to swig a bottle of beer to counteract the dryness of both preparations. I may have mis-ordered but didn't feel inclined to trek back to try again when there are so many great places to eat in Oaxaca.
