“A oasis in a hill”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

Very well located hotel in a green hill of the beautifull city of Oaxaca (Mexico). Close to city center, has a wonderfull view overlooking the city and the magnificent gardens all around. Nice pool too. Although is not a very modern one, this hotel is characterized by the lovely environment with a great veranda in the restaurant, where the breakfasts are very well served. Rustic bar with live music at night, also very well located with a great view and attentive staff.Courtesy shuttle bus to and from the city center.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view overlooking the city.

A picturesque hotel located overlooking the city, set within its own grounds. It has a very retro-60's feel about the place, you could almost see Don Draper and the cast of Mad Men in the hotel! My room was in the 'new wing' according to the reception staff but despite my room being large and relatively comfortable it lacked some modern amenities like a remote for the air conditioning, so I had to get another one from reception which took some time. The room's TV did not work when I checked in and despite telling the porter it took twenty four hours before someone fixed it, after I had to report it again to reception who sorted the problem quickly. The room also contained a large wardrobe with an old fashioned safe which you secure with a 'drop lock' that you sign for from reception, but do not lose or damage it as a replacement according to the hotel will cost US$1000! My room also contained an iron and a decent sized but dated bathroom, plus access to free Wifi. Perhaps the best thing about the Victoria is the bar, which is comfortable, has a good value happy hour and does a great margarita. Service is slow though. It overlooks the city and has great views including the hotel pool, which is small but a pleasant place to have a dip but it can get busy. The restaurant also looks over the pool, service is better than the bar but the food is fairly poor and it is pricey for the region. The breakfast is buffet style and has a range of hot and cold dishes from fruit to eggs made to order, but the quality is average and it can get very busy with tour bus groups. The Victoria also has tennis courts and grounds you can take a walk in. The hotel also offers a courtesy shuttle bus into Oaxaca city centre which runs once an hour to and from the city. It can leave earlier than the times stated you make sure you turn up slightly early. Overall, the hotel is pleasant and in a nice out of town location, but the food, rooms and areas of service could do with modernising or improvement.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the city. You should get a great view.

It doesn't worth the price. I stayed for 6 nights and the internet service is the worst I ever had. I get to trouble a lot and by far it is the worst. Besides, I asked for long distance call prices and they never returned the answer. The bathrooms looks clean but smell weird, for that, I asked to be changed of room and made wait for almost 5 hours, with no room and a crappy internet connection. I would not recommend to anyone that comes for work. One last thing, they have this bus service to downtown, but if they don't have enough people, they don't pick you up from there, so I assume that if you come for pleasure is not a good idea either.

I even wasn't able to post this while I was there because of the internet connection... Really terrible...

we stayed 3 nights in this hotel and we enjoyed all of it. the hotel is far from the city centre, although google maps says 20 min walk. there are free shuttles to zocalo and plus taxi is very cheap(45 pesos which is 4 dollars). the hotel restaurant was very good, a little highly priced comparing to downtown restaurants. what i liked the most about the hotel was our suite. we had an awsome city view and very clean beautiful room with satelite tv. the hotel was very children friendly.

This place is old. My biggest problem is that a staff member lied to me. Two of us are sharing a room. At check in we were told the second key would be available later. We were then told they dont give out a second key. The room smelled when I walked in. I can hear the water leak in the bathroom. They dont have elevators or keycards. I had to sign out a key at reception for the safe. The tv does not work either. On the bright side the beds are comfortable the food was good and the Internet works so I was able to write this for you.

The hotel was very busy at the time we visited, and our first-floor bedroom overlooked the main entrance, which meant that we got a lot of noise in the evenings and early mornings. The room was spacious and clean although a little tired and the furniture and fittings seemed a bit worn - not really up to the five stars which the hotel claims. It was windy during our stay, and the windows rattled so much that we had to pad them with paper to keep the noise down.

The dinner menu in the restaurant offers a good choice of food, but service is not great - some of the waiters are rather abrupt with the diners and delivery of the food to the table can take a long time. Some meals had to be sent back for re-heating, and they were not much warmer when they came back. The breakfast buffet choice is limited and seems to vary day by day; service is even worse than in the evening - on one occasion I had to wait 20 minutes to get some bread rolls, and even then I only got them by standing and waiting and repeatedly asking the waiters to get me some - my dining companions still didn't get any! Another day, I waited 15 minutes to get a cup of coffee.

The hotel is built on a hillside, so there can be quite a bit of up-and-down, and there is no lift. Even if you are on the "ground" floor, you still have to descend two floors to get to the restaurant, so this is not a place for people who do not like stairs.

The hotel grounds are quite nice, but if you are visiting Oaxaca, the location is not great, since it is quite a way to the town centre, and a fair hike uphill on the way back The shuttle bus runs hourly, but not between noon and 1800 hrs; however, a taxi from the centre to the hotel only cost about 50 pesos.

If you stay here, try to get a room with a view!

Room Tip: Rooms with a view will be quieter too.

Old hotel. Wear & tear visible in the furniture and in the room. We were in room 716. Large room with magnificent view over the valley and the city. Did not have a terrace but could open the window. Airco functioning is good. This is a large hotel and the restaurant is quite a walk. Not suitable for the physically handicapped. Many steps. Mexican breakfast buffet is ok. Diner in the restaurant was good. Hotel is on a hillside with a very steep approach. Quite a long way from city center but hotel had a shuttle available. Room does not have fridge or mini bar.
