We stayed at this wonderful B & B during the week of Dia De Los Muertos. The service was warm, sincere, and just all around wonderful. If you are looking for a quiet and serene spot, this is it. El Secreto is walking distance to the center of town, as well as Santo Domingo, and the main Avenue that takes you to the Zocalo. The staff is always ready for you, and it was so nice to wake up each morning to a super tasty breakfast each morning. (I sure do miss those breakfasts!) I will stay here again.

We stayed at El Secreto this past weekend and had an excellent time. Valentina, Ceci, and Juan prepared a great breakfast and helped us out with any questions we had.

Highly recommended and located right at the center of Oaxaca.

El Secreto is truly a little secret hide-away in Oaxaca. The perfect location made it easy to get to attractions, markets, the Zocalo, many local shops and restaurants within an easy walk. The host, Amelia and her family and excellent staff made us feel welcome. The breakfasts, which we had at Bugambilias, were beautifully presented using fresh ingredients and delicious. Everything is clean and well maintained. Purified water is used and provided so we felt totally safe and comfortable. We loved being the only guests in all three rooms, having the house to ourselves just like a "home away from home". The rooftop terrace had a great view and was a wonderful place for day or night gatherings and relaxing. The only suggestion I have is to clean the huge rain shower heads so that the water comes out equally through all the little holes, which are currently clogged. We loved our time there and look forward to coming back.

My wife and I have visited Oaxaca three times, this last time for our longest stay. We were fortunate to have a room in El Secreto, as the rooms are much in demand. Our room was the smallest of three, but very comfortable and beautifully decorated. We enjoyed the rain shower very much, as well as the large screened door and ceiling fan that kept the room a pleasant temperature at night. We also enjoyed the rooftop terrace, also cool and breezy at dawn and in the evening, with very comfortable furniture. One afternoon when it rained steadily we sat under the rooftop canopy for awhile. The breakfasts were a real treat--the table appointed each morning with colorful napkins and flowers, and the food absolutely delicious and healthy. Most of all, the staff makes El Secreto special--all very pleasant, gracious, good natured, talented people. Although our Spanish is limited, Juan and Renato spoke excellent English, and everybody was patient and understanding when we attempted Spanish. Overall, El Secreto is a wonderful place--a great location near Santo Domingo, the Alcala pedestrian walkway, El Llano (Juarez Parque), and many restaurants, shops, museums, churches, and places of interest. We would gladly stay there again; in fact, we've been discussing that very possibility.

Room Tip: Our room, Dahlia, had a queen bed. I believe the other two have king beds and cost a bit more. All...

We have stayed at las Bugambilias before but it was full when we visited in October so we stayed at el Secreto this trip. Because there are only 3 rooms, you feel like you are in your own lovely home with super attentive service, terrific food, and a lovely staff. Bravo to el Secreto!

My husband and I spent 5 night in El-Secreto in Oaxaca - it was amazing!
The house is most beautiful, the attention to details is unbelievable!
No one single down point! The breakfast was delicious, the bed was even more comfy then in home, 10 minutes walk from the Zocalo, great and most helpfull staff!

This sister property to Las Bugambillias, a family owned B &B in central Oaxaca is perfectly presented, maintained and professionally run. From the moment of our arrival we were made to feel welcome and nothing we asked for was too much trouble. The breakfasts were exquisitely arranged works of art by cook Valentina, ably assisted by her colleague Juan. In addition to looking so good, the food was also delicious. Juan also took some post for us to send off to Australia and arranged for some laundry which was returned later that same day.

El Secreto is located on Calle Reforma, a reasonably busy and noisy road in Oaxaca but once inside the property, the traffic noise subsides. Bedrooms have both ceiling fans and air conditioning which were good amenities in the heat and humidity. The private courtyard on the Azelea room in which we stayed was also great.

El Secreto comes highly recommended but note this is not a hotel and staff are not always on the premises at your beckon call. Las Bugambillias is also however located on Calle Reforma around a block away where it appeared staff to answer your questions or deal with any problems are on site most of the time.

A must see while in Oaxaca is Monte Alban the Zapotec archaeological site for which a return taxi trip was arranged for us at short notice. Also worth considering is a personalised guided tour with English speaking taxi driver Salomon who charges the very reasonable rate of MP150 per hour. We chose to include the markets at Etla, a paper factory up in the hills behind Etla, an artist’s workshop situated in an old textile mill and the Dona Rosa Black Pottery Studio. While the latter of these was most interesting with a huge range of stock at very reasonable prices, the experience was spoilt by surly staff, no credit card facilities and an unwillingness to even discuss shipping any purchases overseas.

There is an excellent selection of good quality and reasonable restaurants in Oaxaca, one of which Casa Oaxaca we dined at twice during our day. There is a free appetizer provided there which includes a blue corn toritlla and a special salsa prepared at your table by a waiter. If however you request this salsa is prepared "piquante" (spicy) this is what you get. My eyes are still watering two days later and we are used to eating spicy food!
