“Alebrijes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2013

A great town to find the Oaxacan carved animals in many, many shops, at good prices, and made by the people who sell them. The Jimenezes now have both a little museum and a gallery in their home, where Manuel was one of the inventors of the carvings.

“A waste of time.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2012

You can find alebrijes everywhere in Oaxaca, as for artisans, well I've seen carve wood even in downtown Oaxaca, you can go to Mitla and you can see craftspeople working on alebrijes in their workshops, this place in not really special, I felt it is just a tourist trap, a place where you only go to purchase alebrijes (animal/monster carvings) and not much more, next time in Oaxaca I would not waste my time or trouble coming here, you can go to other pueblos that have more facinating stuff like Zaachila or Cuilapam de Guerrero, then again this is just my opinion (but I have been to Oaxaca at least 10 times over the last 21 years).

“Lovely site, lots of alebrijes”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2012

Took a collectivo there on a Sunday, and would recommend going after 1 if you go then and want to visit the workshops where the gaily painted carvings are produced. People are welcoming and the small town looks up to Monte Alban in the distance.

How could you visit Oaxaca and not buy those fanciful animal carvings?

“All you ever wanted to know about Alebrijes”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 December 2011

It is nice to see alebrijes from scratch: the piece of tender wood, then the sculpture then the painting.
But don't expect half price. Even if you are at the heart of the production, prices are still stiff and go down only for some quantities.
