“Small and charming”
Reviewed 19 January 2012

This is a tiny hotel very close to everything Oaxaca has to offer. The rooms vary in size - we moved from the second floor small room to a much larger downstairs room. There is a small interior courtyard with tables and a wonderful patio on the second floor where one can sit and read or have a meal. Warm and sunny,
The staff are very helpful; the tour from the hotel was more expensive that others from town but much longer and the guide, Juan Maria, is exceptionally knowledgable. And it is a small group.
The room does lack a chest of drawers but one can ask and receive many more hangers and use the side table drawers and the ones under the hanging area. And having a mini fridge and coffee maker are a real plus for those of us who like do not care for eating out much.
I love that they locked the front door from 9pm. We felt perfectly safe and secure and happy here.

What saves this place is the staff very willing to please. Room size ok but NO DRAWERS!!! Only a place to hang clothes with not enough hangers. Dark rooms, furniture ok but poorly chosen. Had a sofa which we never used, would have preferred a CHEST OF DRAWERS instead. Clothes we could not hang ended up all over the room: on desk, window sill, TV stand, suitcase, etc. what a circus! No restaurant but have partnership with DE LA PARRA hotel 3 blocks away with 30% discount. Only had brakfast but it was good, tables in courtyard, freezing in the morning! Stayed a week and the final balance was positive but far from perfect. Next time would look for more comfortable place with more amenities.

Super small hotel/timeshare. In the city centre but very peaceful and safe. Great service, clean and friendly.
We loved it here.

I stayed with my husband and his parents. We had a blast. We did everything we could, from shopping at the zocalo to eating at the marketa to watching a film at a nearby theatre to visiting museums and taking the guided tour of Oaxaca and its surrounding areas. The room was much smaller than we expected. Our queen size beds were basically a few feet apart from one another. Sleeping so close to the in-laws is a bit weird, but we got over it. There was no kitchen, so we ate out a lot, but there's such good food around, so that wasn't so bad. I loved this vacation. I am so happy that our first exchange with RCI was so good! There was also internet nearby and I even used a fax machine nearby. It was so quiet. All the visitors and staff were respectful of one another. My husband and his family are Mexican, so we were merely visiting a new area of Mexico, but not new to the culture by any means. Well, I must say that they enjoyed it so much, too! I would recommend this place in a heartbeat! My husband also got a very nice, big tattoo for a very inexpensive price and superb quality (we like tattoos). We also enjoyed drinks (liquor) at the local bar/cafe. They were very generous and accomodating there and everywhere we went! The buses aren't too far so you can hop on and visit other cities and towns, too.

This small hotel had a few pluses and several minuses.

The pluses: 1. The hotel was clean 2. It was near the zocolo[town center] We could walk to almost everything. 3. The staff was courteous and usually helpful.

The minuses. 1. Our room-no. 104 was very small. It had a king sized bed that took up almost the whole room. The table/ desk was small. Half of it was taken up with the coffee pot. The straight back chair was the only chair in the room. 2. No inhouse restaurant altho there was room service after 10 am. which we didn't try I had the continental breakfast one morning. It consisted of a bowl of corn flakes with warm milk, dry toast and fresh squeezed orange juice. 3. No lounge area. The court yard was the lounge area. It consisted of patio tables and plastic chairs. No place to sit and relax except the bed in our room.

Personally, I would not stay there again.

A friend and I went to Oaxaca to study Spanish for two weeks. The master suite (large room at the front of the two story 7 room hotel) was perfect for us. Much larger than the average hotel room. The staff was friendly and helpful at all times. They recommended a charming and knowledgeable guide whom we engaged for all day excursions in the Valley of Oaxaca. His name is Jose Maria Brena Morales of Colors of Oaxaca.

The room is decorated in a spartan Mexican style....a lot of white. We felt that they could have raised the visual impact by using some of the bold colors of Mexico for accent pieces. The white tiled floors are accented with oriental carpets...how about some of the wonderful handwoven carpets from nearby Teotitlan? And fresh flowers in the room would be a nice touch, especially since they can be purchased on the street or in the markets for a couple of dollars only.

Since the hotel is small, there is no restaurant or bar, but they use a nearby restaurant to provide room service (acceptable but not exciting food). However, it is a 3-5 minute walk to the Zocalo where there are a variety of excellent restaurants and there is a neighborhood taqueria right around the corner.

Overall, a good experience if you are looking for a very nice and quiet hotel, conveniently located to the historic center of the city.

The staff is gentle, helpful, always quick to answer your questions. We were trying to conserve water and didn't want our towels washed every day. Every day the maid would decorate our towels with the most intricate, beautiful animal shapes with flowers and place them on our bed - very romantic!

I loved that the hotel only had 8 rooms looking out into an open courtyard. It was a few short blocks to El Zocalo, the main plaza where each day and night there was something "happening. What a wonderful place for singles, families, couples, young and old.

San Felipe offers tours that I recommend taking. My husband and I are not "organized tour-type of people", but these semi-private tours, hosted by Jose Maria, are fabulous. He's a well-educated Zapotec gentleman who will speak English, Spanish and Zapotec to you, whatever is your pleasure. This is actually a MUST when going to Oaxaca because you would never be able to find these little villages on your own.

The hotel is very clean, mostly very quiet (there are tiles in the rooms and the courtyard which carry noise if something is talking very loudly) and a wonderful escape from your busy days going to villages, museums, churches, marketplaces. I will stay at the San Filipe if we are ever fortunate enough to return.!

  • Liked — Small, intimate hotel
  • Disliked — Unfortunately a woman upstairs could not, would not sleep and paced on the tile floors all night!
