“Rather close to everything but quiet with a cosy courtyard”
Reviewed 16 September 2013

I practically liked everything about the hotel, starting with the price, then location, the courtyard and especially the American fellow travellers you meet at breakfast. The staff was helpful and friendly. Unlike my other guests I was not bothered by mosquitoes and slept quite well on the mattress. The rooms are quite dark, but comfortable, it takes ages until the warm water in the shower shows up, but that's about the only minor thing to remark on the downside.

Thank you for your opinion that gives us the opportunity to explain the guests and the general public that for Hotel "Las mariposas" the environment is very important , so that our goal is to become an ecological hotel. One of many things we have done to accomplish this is to implement solar water heaters, in order to safe water we put in all bathrooms a tray where putting the cold water while hot water falls. It is the reason hot water takes some minutes to fall.
Thanks for your remark. We hope to see you in your next visit to Oaxaca!

My colleague and I stayed in a very nice room with two double beds on the second floor above the open-air kitchen for 17 days while we studied spanish at the nearby Instituto Cultural de Oaxaca, and explored other aspects of the city. We found the owners and staff to be friendly and engaging, and the other guests to be interesting fellow travelors. The courtyard was spacious, comfortable, and inviting with an abundance of flowers and a central fountain. The typical breakfast was an assortment of breads and coffee or tea, but occasionally they offered traditionally made tortillas for a small charge - delicious! One thing to note: I got bitten by mosquitoes practically every night (this was during the rainy season) and despite the nightly application of bug spray, they still got me.

Thank you so much about your opinion that help us to offer a better service to uor guests. The hotel´s location is perfect to move and go easily walking while you enjoy of the city.
Even though the window screen...Some mosquitos takes place in the rooms in the raining seasson. The 100% oaxaqueño breakfast that occasionally "Doña Juanita" makes is wonderfull. We hope receive you again!

very lovely courtyards, very friendly people, excellent location and value, more informal than your usual hotel, can be a bit confusing to someone never in Mexico befor ebut youll figure it out. the not super duper comfortable mattress is the reason for not giving 5 stars.

The hotel Las Mariposas is very well located near the centre of the City of Oaxaca. We were in a small, very small, flat on the ground floor tht led to a nice garden with table and chairs. The atmosphere of the Hotel is very peaceful and pleasant. The Hotel has about 20 rooms spread over four or five one storey buildings surrounded by small gardens or patios.

The weak point of the hotel is the unfriendly and uncooperative staff. Breakfast is very simple, lacking some variety.

I stayed for at Las Mariposas for almost a month last summer and again for almost a month in August, this year, and I plan to stay there whenever I'm in Oaxaca City. This is a better-than-basic, comfortable, homey small hotel with some charm. It's important to get the right room because the beds in 2 rooms I've stayed in are really uncomfortable (I've made some room recommendations below, having moved around last year because due to work I was in and out). There's no "room service" per se, as in a larger hotel (they won't bring you pizza if that's what you want), but the staff are obliging and interested in doing what they can for guests. Lots of interesting guests from all over, and people meet over coffee and light breakfast (cereal, a pastry) in the morning. There are shared cooking/food storage options and a number of rooms have private basic facilities. It's very central - blacks from anywhere in the centre one would want to go. They reward repeat guests who stay for extended periods with a lower rate. (This time, it cost me $678 US to stay for 3 weeks, considerably below the advertised rate.) I'm fond of this place and see no reason to stay anywhere else when I'm in Oaxaca City, assuming I can get a good bed. The staff have been happy to move me to a different room on request, when this has been possible. Looking at the unhappy review on my sidebar - that guest is unhappy about the front guy (yes, Jorge is a bit gruff); having to be let in after hours (they close the front gate at 8:00 which is a bit early for my taste) but someone sleeps in the front to let guests in; very light breakfast (yes, but go 2 blocks to the Llano Plaza, or Marco Polo which is on the plaza); some confusion about whether rooms were available (I recommend writing to the email address on the website - the person that answers is the one that makes the bookings); the atmosphere is unpleasant (depends on one's attitude; others seem to enjoy themselves and stay for weeks); no privacy in the bathrooms (true for one or two smaller rooms in the back but most rooms have a bathroom with a door that closes; I've been asked by the staff whether or not that was acceptable); coffee not ready at the advertised time (I haven't found that to be the case); no ceiling fans (there is a moveable fan in every room). Sure, there would be "better" hotels in Oaxaca City, but for a lot more $$. Las Mariposas is good value. (Ratings at bottom: fitness centre gets on circle just because there isn't one. There is one a block away. Sleep quality is average just because the rooms aren't consistent. Room service - they get 4 circles because they're super obliging; as noted, they won't bring you food, if that's what you need.)

Room Tip: Especially nice rooms are No. 7 (roomy double, 2 fairly comfortable beds), 9 (one bed, small efficie...

I had been recommended to try Las Mariposas B&B in Oaxaca. I called for reservations for 2 rooms, fellow Jorge at front desk said yes, they had room for the dates I needed, but to send email to their reservations address. Next day, received answer saying that they "didn't have room" for those dates (so who is not telling the truth?). Due to a vehicle breakdown a week later, I ended up staying 1 night at this place with my son and was quite taken aback at unpleasant atmosphere. Male recepcionist was less than friendly, especially after we went to dinner and he sulkily had to open street door for us. Awful pillow, no bath soap, and NO privacy for bathroom (half-swinging door like historic bars!), no roof fan for heat -only open windows to patio (noisy). Allegedly "continental" breakfast served from 8 - 9:30 (we had to leave for hiway trip) and NOT even the coffee was ready at that hour! They only take cash (credit card machine "doesn't work"). I prefer to pay bit more, but receive better service, a real bathroom, and coffee...IF it is advertised as being included (not when they please an hour late). There are better B&B's in Oaxaca, I promise. ¡Shop around! Las Mariposas does not deliver what it publicizes.

Room Tip: The patio rooms near entrance to street (lobby) are very noisy, due to fact that all other guests wa...

We offer an apology for not having met your expectations,
Our reservations are only guaranteed to make payment for the first night deposit so available rooms are according to requests we receive.
As you confirm our rooms are high-ceilinged that is the reason we don’t use ceiling fans but there is one fan in the closet.
About the Coffee it is served from 8: am. not available before.
The POS terminal is working properly, however sometimes have problems reading the card data, which is not in our power to solve.
In terms of attention from the clerk take the necessary steps to not resubmit similar situations.
We offer apologize again and are at your service.
Ma. Teresa Villareal.

Our room was easy to reserve over email, and the staff was courteous and flexible with our check in timings. They were always around to offer help. The room was serviceable (not luxurious, but a great deal) and the morning coffee was wonderful. I was really impressed with how quiet this hotel was, and that all the guests there were respectful of quiet hours. I would gladly return to this hotel.
