“Favorite Place to Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 October 2013

For the second year in a row we stayed at the wonderfully located Parador San Agustin. It's merely a block and a half off the Zocalo and within walking distance of the major markets and many of the fine restaurants and historical and touristic sites in the city. The staff is first rate and eager to make your visit to Oaxaca as enjoyable as possible. Rooms are good sized, very clean (as is the entire hotel), very reasonable in price, and many contain wonderfully massive old furniture. Wireless is available although tricky in some rooms. However, there are chairs and seats on both floors of the hotel where the Wi-Fi is excellent. We simply have no need to look for other accommodations in Oaxaca.

Room Tip: Rooms not directly on the street tend to be quieter.

This is a centrally located hotel with very friendly staff & an attractive price tag to boot. The place has character with high, stone ceilings and wooden shutters.

However....The wireless in here is poor,if non existent. There was no air con & the in-room fan just didn't cut it for us in the extreme June heat. While this place is good value for money, I'm not sure we could have lasted another night without air con unfortunately.

great place friendly staff and well located. I found it to be very quiet while being right in the heart of things only one block from the Zocalo with shops and restrants all around you. I came for wedding while I was late and needed to iron my shirt one of the lady that work there took it from me and by the time I was done with my shower she had it pressed and layed out for me. over and beyond there dutys friendlest staff of my trip

As a group of friends, we stayed a week in this hotel. It was a social and cultural delight. Well located close to the Zocalo. The hotel has a marvelous layout around courtyards and impeccably clean, large rooms. Most significant feature is the staff. They seem to enjoy workign together and it is contagious. They were cheerful, polite, and caring. Leaving after a week, I felt like I was leaving family. I cannot say enough good about this hotel and the people there. I would love to return sometime.

We stayed on our arrival to Oaxaca and enjoyed it so much that we re booked the hotel on our return before flying out of Oaxaca. The staff are friendly and helpful, the hotel is situated very conveniently right in the centre giving easy access to all the wonderful markets, and places of interest. The room was large, clean and the breakfast good, the only downside the showers were a bit dodgy, although they worked they were a bit erratic.

This hotel is very well located, clean and with friendly and helping staff.Large rooms well furnished.
BUT, NO windows in rooms and a very noisy university center next door that gives loud lectures all hours until sometimes after 10:00hres at night. When I say LOUD, believe me!
Had to use ear plugs, but not sufficient, and keep door open for air...ventilation on the high ceiling barely useful.
Too bad...

Room Tip: Second floor and on the left when entering the hotel.

We just spent 4 nights at this great place. I cannot say enough good things about Denise at the front desk. She was incredibly helpful long before we arrived- she sent me pictures of the room, patiently answered many questions and was always extremely service-oriented. When we arrived much earlier than we thought we would, as we were able to get on an earlier connecting flight from Mexico City, she managed to have our room ready much earlier than standard check-in time and they made breakfast for us even though it seemed to be past breakfast time.

Denise also watched our 2 young daughters on short notice when we didn't have a babysitter and she didn't even ask to be paid (we paid her anyway). She gave us advice on what to see and do and booked a great and inexpensive tour of Mitla, El Tule, Teotitlan and Hierve el Agua for us at the last minute. She always had a smile on her face and was just incredibly nice, friendly and helpful.

We had the Margaritas Suite, which is in an interior courtyard towards the back of the hotel and is shielded from the street noise. It is fairly quiet, though about 7:30 a.m. or so one might hear the fresh juice being made for breakfast in the kitchen. The suite was large with 2 separate rooms and an enormous bathroom. 2 beds were put in the 2d room for our daughters. The only downside is that there was sometimes a smell of sewage coming up from the toilet, which is something we have experienced at several other hotels in Mexico.

The entire suite cost only about $85 dollars per night, making it an incredible value. We paid in cash and free breakfast for the adults were included. The breakfasts are ample and good- eggs, delicious black beans, wonderful fruit plate, fresh bread with butter and jam, and fresh juices, including papaya, cactus, carrot, etc. You eat breakfast in the downstairs courtyard which, like the hotel, has a lot of colonial character. The other staff serving breakfast, like Noe, were also very nice and helpful.

This is not a "five star" or "luxury" hotel but it is authentically colonial, very pretty, spotlessly clean and quite comfortable and a bargain for the price. The location is fantastic- just 1.5 blocks from the Zocalo and maybe 2 or 3 blocks from Mercado Juarez. Everything is so easily walkable from there. It is also on a street that has much less traffic noise and fumes than many others in Oaxaca.

Oaxaca is a vibrant, colorful town with gorgeous architecture, fascinating markets, interesting churches and museums, and surrounded by villages with interesting handicrafts. I highly recommend a stay at Parador San Agustin.

Room Tip: If you want a large room that is quiet, ask for the Margaritas Suite.
