We would have given an excellent review for many reasons, except for the location of our room. We were in a suite in the back above the kitchen. I would recommend that if your stay here, the front section of the hotel is the place to be.

Location is terrific, staff very helpful, amenities are all you can ask for in a Oaxaca hotel. Just sleep in the front section.

By the way, the school next store is not a distraction.

Located very close to cultural sights as well as the Zocolo.Good breakfasts, and free if you pay for your room by cash.We booked our tours at an agency at the Zocolo. When you go on the tour a lady walks you down to a close-by street intersection and waits with you until you are picked up in a minivan. However on the return from this tour you are not dropped off at the same intersection. The drop off could be close by or as in one case at a Hotel at a not too short distance away. This distance may be not really that far but since you are not familiar with this city you may end in a spot you have never been before and end up walking a little more (or more than a little) finding your way back. The San Agustin does offer to arrange tours so this may not happen if you book through them. There are several currency traders near the hotel offering different rates but all better than the banks, plus you do not have to line up or need a photocopy of your passport to exchange.

This is a really nice place as all reviews say. Good large rooms albeit with hard beds. Nice staff and breakfast included if you pay cash. Couldn't be better placed for the zocalo which meant short rests between site seeing was possible. Highly recommended.

From the moment we arrived, we felt comfortable and welcomed. The location was perfect for us, as we went to every museum, gallery and cultural event we could. So many concerts are free in Oaxaca. In addition to the zocalo, which is a great place to people watch, there is the alcala, a street blocked off to traffic where there are buskers and vendors galore, as well as the famous book store Amate with a great selection of books in English. I cannot say enough about the staff, in fact I want to mention them by name: Julisses, Gabriel, Eli and Leticia. They happily engaged in a mix of Spanish and English, and went way, way out of their way to help when I had a situation requiring going to the police station. Leticia, then Eli, accompanied me there and translated, insisting that it was part of their job. I was impressed. I loved breakfast (oh, do drink the "jugo verde" -- it is made from cactus, tastes great and lowers cholesterol!). Parador San Agustin is a little gem.. and you will meet others, Americans, Canadians and people from other countries who are just great to chat with in the mornings. I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: If you want a room with a window to outside, ask for that. Our first room didn't have one, and...

This is a warm, welcoming hotel that makes you feel like you are family. And it is one block from the Zocolo! The most wonderful staff are always helpful and friendly. Pay by cash and the excellent breakfasts are free! The staff cares about their guests and providing quality service. You feel like part of the family.

Room Tip: We liked Room 215 (2 twin beds) and 208 (king). They are away from street, quiet, and roomy.

We (my boyfriend and I) stayed here for 3 nights when we first arrived in Oaxaca City. We enjoyed staying here very much. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The breakfast (incl free because we paid for the room in cash) was delicious. The street that the hotel on is not noisy, which was really nice. It is only a few blocks from the Zocalo, a big square with a beautiful church and restaurants that's a popular tourist spot. It's a great location overall, right in the Centro Historico.

Our room was a good size, though there was no window to the outside (probably helped limit the noise, though). The mattress was a bit hard, but better than other hotels we stayed in there. The wifi was not great. In our room, we had to be in a specific spot to get on the wifi, and the signal was pretty slow (to be expected, though). It was a great place overall.

We just finished an 11 night stay here and would go back in a minute. The parador is literally one block from the zocalo so you can walk or take a quick inexpensive taxi just about anywhere you'd want to go. (We never had a taxi problem but as suggested, we always negotiated the price before we got in.) Our room was spacious and clean, a real bargain especially when you pay in pesos. Then they throw in a very substantial breakfast with choices of eggs and bacon, hot cakes and Mexican dishes with a fruit plate, etc., all served in their lovely courtyard. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. If I had one complaint it would be that the beds are of a fine quality but they are hard. When I mentioned that to the housekeeper she put two extra pads on the bed and even had me go to another room to try that mattress. A comfortable mattress topper would be an excellent addition to their beds. That said, she did make it better and seemed genuinely concerned about my comfort. We highly recommend this hotel for a very traditional, excellent Oaxacan experience.

Room Tip: We were lucky to get room 216 in the back sharing a patio only with the suite Margarite. It was ver...
