El Diablo y La Sandia is the perfect home for a journey to Oaxaca. There were excellent logistical elements like a central location, great communication with the hosts, easy check-in/out, etc., but all of those can be found at a well-run hotel. What makes this place special are the careful, unique touches: gorgeous colors and decor, friendly staff members, interesting guests and breakfast conversations, and delightful smells and that permeate throughout the home.

We would come down into a beautifully lit central area for a traditional Oaxacan breakfast with French press coffee and just-squeezed juices. After leaving for the day, we'd return to a space speckled with freshly cut flowers in vases and petals from blooming trees gracing the floor. We stayed upstairs in the Luna suite, which I would totally recommend because it has the most comfortable bed and a beautiful outdoor patio perfect for reading, yoga, etc.

Lastly, and perhaps most tellingly, on our very last day we had a bit of a technological calamity with both of our phones gone haywire while abroad. Maria graciously loaned us her phone and sat with us during a crisis moment while we talked to Verizon, trying to help us as best she could with our snag. She brought in the dog to raise our spirits and truly saved the day, not to mention our phones.

There are other delightful perks to staying here (the soap! the art! the light!), but I won't go on. Just call the search a day and go to the Devil already!

Room Tip: Go with the Luna! It's upstairs (the only one) with a little more privacy and great light.

El Diablo y la Sandia is in the heart of beautiful Oaxaca City. Only a 10 minute walk to the zocalo and Santo Domingo cathedral. It is cozy and comfortable, with delicious breakfasts and a fine selection mezcal! Maria is a wonderful host, very helpful and generous. We were very grateful to have stayed at her house and will definitely return.

I stayed at el Diablo y la Sandia for a week in June 2014. The B&B is charming, spotless, and very quiet, despite being in the heart of Oaxaca City (which is noisy, like all cities). The open kitchen and living room made it feel like I was arriving back "home" each evening after a long day out. I was in Oaxaca City for work-related reasons, so I was very happy to be able to have a drink from the honor bar each evening to relax as I would normally do at home, as well as have a coffee first thing in the morning when I got up to prepare for the day. The free wi-fi is also convenient and very fast (much faster than in Mexico City where I live). The owner Maria is welcoming and always available to answer questions. I plan to stay here again upon my return, as well as bring my family for a vacation. I chose this B&B due to the variety of positive comments on tripadvisor, which are spot on.

El Diablo y la Sandia is a charming B&B walking distance to all the main attractions. If you are looking for an authentic local place to stay with a unique mexican touch, amazing amenities, great breakfast and a terrace to relax this is the place for you. Maria our host was very helpful in providing guidance during our stay and was very easy to get in touch with and flexible prior to our stay. We would love to stay with her again.

A beautiful place to call your Oaxacan home. Great location, spacious rooms with gorgeous decor, a comfy bed & lovely peaceful rooftop. Your host Maria is a beautiful soul, who treats her guests like friends. Most definitely the place I will return to for future visits to Oaxaca.
