Casa Los Arquitos B&B

This place was an absolute gem, literally an oasis of tranquility and loveliness. You can tell from the moment that you walk in that it is well kept and looked after. The owner Juan and his wife clearly take pride in their accommodation. What I particularly enjoyed about my stay here was the following: Juan was a wonderful host and nothing was too difficult or out of his way. Only a short walk from the main plaza, in Oaxaca but yet so quiet. Lots of little areas around the accommodation where you can sit, read your book, drink a glass of wine and relax. I highly recommend staying here.

We stayed at Casa Los Arquitos from July 8 - July 15 and had a most wonderful time. As previous reviews state, this lovely B&B has many excellent qualities. First of all, it is located at the northern edge of the historic district--close enough to be a 10-15 walk to the zocalo but far enough away to be tranquil and quiet at night. We walked everywhere--to Santo Domingo church, to the zocalo, to the mercado on 20 de noviembre, and to many fantastic restaurants nearby such as El Quinque, Zanduga, and La Olla.

The B&B itself is beautifully landscaped and appointed. A dining area is available in the mornings for a breakfast of freshly squeezed juice, fresh fruit, granola, and yogurt lovingly prepared by the owners. There is also a library/computer room containing helpful guidebooks on Oaxaca and Mexico as a whole. We stayed in the king with kitchen, and we were very happy with our room. The kitchen contains two stove burners, a coffee maker, refrigerator and pots, plates, and utensils. The bathroom is fairly large with an enclosed shower (which seems to be rare in Mexico). Solid wood doors frame the entries of both rooms and can be closed for maximum privacy. The main room itself is bright and airy; you can even see the Guelaguetza stadium from the windows. We slept deeply and soundly in the comfortable bed.

While Casa Los Arquitos has many excellent qualities, the best part of our stay was being hosted by Juan and Patricia. From the moment we met them--after arriving almost two hours late because of a delayed flight--we were welcomed with open arms. We saw them every morning at breakfast, where we were offered advice on places to see and things to do. Juan was always available to answer our questions and took a genuine interest in ensuring that we were experiencing the best of Oaxaca (which we did with his help!). Now, we've stayed at enough B&Bs and met enough owners to know when hosts truly care about their guests, and we can say that without a doubt, Juan and Patricia are the best hosts we've ever had the pleasure of encountering. They are genuinely good-hearted people who care about the well-being of others. At the end of the week, we felt like old friends and were sad to be leaving their comfortable, immaculately clean abode.

We loved Oaxaca's marriage of old, sophisticated architecture with rich, urban artistry and will definitely return for another visit. And, when we do, we will most definitely stay at Casa Los Arquitos with Juan and Patricia. Muchas gracias, Juan y Patricia!

Just got back from a two week visit to the fabulous city of Oaxaca. It's got amazing ancient history, culture, traditions, crafts and food (loved that black mole!). But one of the things that made our two weeks there so pleasant was our stay at a lovely B&B on the northern end of the historic center - Casa Los Arquitos. It's a serene oasis in one of the oldest areas of the city, across from the brick and stone arches of the ancient aqueduct ("arquitos") that give the small hotel its name.

Housed in a beautifully-restored colonial building, it features a pristine and elegantly-decorated inner courtyard with avocado and lime trees and fresh flowers. Rooms are simple but comfortable and immaculate - and with the thick wall of its traditional construction and the large ceiling fan, the room was cool and pleasant even during the warmest afternoons. Delicious daily breakfasts included organic yogurt and freshly-squeezed juices, granola, a selection of bread and rolls and coffee, tea or some of the best hot chocolate we had in Oaxaca.

Casa Los Arquitos is about a 15 min. walk down the main street to the town's famous zocalo and near some of the city's best restaurants (we had wonderful meals at Zandunga, La Biznaga, and Maria Bonita - all serving moderately-priced traditional Oaxacan food, and all within a five minute walk). There are also two lovely parks nearby, the closest of which is the permanent location for the famous La Hormiga torta truck (one of the city's top-ten restaurants according to TripAdvisor).

But the absolute best thing about Casa Los Arquitos are its owners, Juan and Patricia, two of the warmest and most gracious hosts you'll ever encounter. They will try to do whatever they can to make your visit as comfortable and pleasant as possible: accommodating any special needs and assisting you with suggestions and advice for you to get the most out of your visit to Oaxaca. They take literally the old saying "Mi casa es su casa" - my home is your home - as their motto. I miss them already. If you go, tell them David and Laura say, "hola."

From the moment that you walk in the door to Los Arquitos you can sense that this is a special place. Juan and Patricia are two of the nicest and genuinely sincere people that you will ever meet. They will bend over backwards to make your visit with them perfect. My girlfriend needed to see a doctor while she was here. I asked Juan to help and he personally called a doctor for us and explained in detail how to get to the appt. He even told us that he could have a doctor come to the B&B if needed Juan even offered to bring breakfast to our room for my friend if she was not able to make it to the dining room the next morning. The rooms are well appointed, comfy and very, very clean with daily maid service. Their breakfasts are fantastic! Freshly squeezed juice, yogurt, granola, fresh fruit and bakery fresh pastries. We were here for Valentine's Day and Juan and Patricia decorated the dining room with a red tablecloth, rose petals on the table and Valentine balloons. They have a great open air courtyard, great wifi and a nicely stocked library. All said, another Fantastic thing about this place is how quiet it is here. It is on a dead end street with zero noise. It is the first time that I did not need earplugs in Mexico -:) and it is still in close walking district to the Zocalo. I wish that every town that I visit had a place like Los Arquitos.

Oaxaca is an awesome city to visit and explore, with its vast cultural and culinary offerings, but when it's time to rest, Casa Los Arquitos is perfect. Juan and Patricia make this the place that we want to come back to. They have created a beautifully appointed, comfortable and welcoming refuge, in an ideal location. Available to answer questions and offer advice for new visitors and returning friends alike, Juan and Patricia are warm-hearted and sincere folks who are eager to practice their English and help you practice you Spanish, with great patience and good humor. Their place is perfect for those who not only want to conveniently and comfortably take in the city and its surrounding treasures, but also want to experience the graciousness and warmth of the Oaxacan people.

We stayed here for two weeks and we would highly recommend it. A beautiful colonial home on a quiet, safe street minutes away from Santa Domingo Church. The rooms are spacious with ceiling fans, fridges and no shortage of hot water. The wifi service was consistent and the library had a nice collection of travel books about Oaxaca and a computer for our use. The daily breakfasts were healthy and filling with a different egg dish daily. Juan and Patricia were very friendly and very helpful with suggestions for things to do both within the city and outside of Oaxaca . Juan arranged transportation for us when we traveled north into the mountains for the day. We would love to retun to Oaxaca and we would certainly stay here again.

Location is excellent - central but quiet, and safe. Breakfasts are very good, with different juices and fruits and main entree every day. Good coffee and hot chocolate as well. Rooms are not luxurious but are adequate. Nice quiet courtyard and library. Good wifi. Owner, Juan, is a true gentlemen and a great host. Can't imagine a more helpful or professional host.
