“A nice basic hotel”
Reviewed 12 July 2014

The Mansion del Valle is a pleasant, well-located hotel that is about three long block from the Central plaza. Although located on a main street leading to the central square, it is a very quiet property. No air conditioning. The food is mixed: if you order the right thing, the food is quite satisfactory. If not, you will wish you had eaten elsewhere. Unless you are starved, forget the breakfast buffet. Order instead from the breakfast menu; the food will be served hot and will be much fresher. The rooms have minimal furniture and have only a wooden desk chair for sitting, plus a fan thankfully. The mattresses on the beds are new and extremely hard (this is typical in Mexico unless you stay in a Western chain and some of those have hard mattresses too). I awoke each morning sore and cramped. The staff is friendly and helpful although few speak English. They do have safes at the front desk in case your room does not come equipped with one; mine did not. The lower lobby is a very comfortable place to sit and use your computer, since the rooms are so uncomfortable. WiFi is free and is available in your room as well as in the public areas. The hotel was clean and well-maintained.

Lets be clear our room 102 was a disaster; an opinion shared by those in rooms 101 and 103. The rooms are right beside the restaurant and lounge areas with the slatted window from the aged toilet and shower being straight into this area. As you shower you see a succession of heads walking past to and from there rooms. The worst thing is the noise. On 102 we could hear every sound at the reception and a continuous babble from the other public areas. To add to the noise the rooms have heavy furniture and the noise from the first floor when someone moves a chair or the like adds further irritation.
At around 11.30pm I could hear a long shouted conversation which had me getting out of bed and using the spy hole to see what was going on. Imagine my thoughts when I could see two members of staff half a metre from the door shouting across the lounge area. The next morning the occupant of 103 said if he had had a dressing gown he would have gone out and told them to shut up. I told him if he had I would have been out with him. Talking of the next morning it was no better when at 6.45am a party who were obviously leaving early decided to sing ‘happy birthday’ to one of their group with great gusto and volume.
To finish our stay, breakfast was something of a scrum with items frequently running out for some time before being replaced.
I can say the hotel has a good location, but the rooms feel in need of modernization to help them appear cleaner. The truth is that nothing really felt right after the angry night I and others had.

Room Tip: Do not accept rooms 101-103 if you want to relax and have a reasonable nights sleep

PROs: The location is not too far off from the central plaza and the restaurants. There is free private parking. Staff is reasonably helpful.

CONs: A bit old facilities that need to be serviced soon. Rooms are rather small. Price is quite high for what it is. Breakfast is not so nice. There is nicer hotels for this price.

During our stay at the *noisy* Posada de los Angeles, we had been parking our car at the sister property, la Mansión del Valle, since the Posada doesn't have a parking lot. On our trips back and forth to get the car, we decided we would cancel our reservation to the Posada de los Angeles and stay at the Mansión del Valle instead on our return trip to San Cristóbal. I am very glad we did. This is also a quaint and charming hotel, with Mexican Colonial furnishings, hand loomed and embroidered pillows and linens in the rooms and lots of Mexican character. Just way bigger and cleaner bathrooms and less noise than at the Posada de los Angeles. It's also very conveniently located, near the Zócalo, the Amber Museum, etc. All this, and free parking! We had a great night's sleep, which was good, since by this point I was having altitude sickness from going up and down the mountains all over Chiapas, lol. Would stay here again.

Everything at the hotel was fine, but the hotel was definitely not memorable. Average bar area, average rooms, small beds, and old bathrooms. The location was good and staff were friendly enough, but Perhaps try somewhere else that has a bit more character.

This is a beautiful rustic hotel with wooden floors and old Mexico Style Hotel, It is close walking distance to the Centro and restaurant and shops. The hotel is clean and well maintained and the rooms have a great rustic ambiance. To be honest with you we just used the room to sleep and shower and spent most of our time wondering the cute little city of San Cristobal. The only thing I could say bad about the hotel which was not really the hotels fault was our last night we could not sleep, a tour full of what may be high school students arrived at 12 midnight and they had rooms scattered through the hotel, even if kept in one place it would not matter because the sound echos through the entire place. these kids where up til four in the am slamming doors and causing a ruckus upsetting many of the hotel guests to open their doors and yell shut up in Spanish. The next day I was a little tired, we woke up at 5am. The tour office in the hotel has a friend with a private car who knows the roads to Palenque and he for a fair price drove us there and took some stops along the way to see some beautiful sights. We paid him a fraction for what it would have cost if we took the bus to Palenque then from Palenque did a tour which would of also meant back tracking to San Cristobal which would have used a majority of time.
While in Palenque you must visit the Artesnia market, as well their are many restaurants to choose from. You could also visit other hotels as they are very rustic kind of like museums ...Amber is the popular stone in Chiapas, we were going to visit the museum but thought it was a waste of time and money as we were not interested in purchasing to much amber. While in the market I purchased a pair of earings under 350 pesos that were amber and i knew it was amber because the stone was not finished its ends where jagged/rustic and had an agle cut.

We visited 2 nights in this hotel with a croup of 30 passengers. The hotel is medium size with 65 rooms. Location is relatively good, not far away from the Zogalo. Inner yard and the terrace over it and on the top of the compound are very nice details. The breakfast is buffet-type and quite Ok.
Unfortunately there is no ventilation in the rooms. There is very limited space for your things. You must keep your clothes and other items in your suitcase. On the other hand the shower space is too huge. These are planning mistakes. We were missing swimming pool, too...

Room Tip: Inner rooms have less noise.
