Very laid back place, great location close to the streets with bars and restaurants. Close to a great matkedplace, where you can buy everything from avokados to live chickens.
The rooms are fine, and eventhough the bathrooms are unisex it worked out fine for us.

A fantastic little hostel. Very cheap, but not lacking in cleanliness or character. Beautiful little building with warm and homely atmosphere. Very helpful staff. We took a private double room, which was small but clean and comfortable. Laundry and cooking facilities are basic but sufficient - lots places to eat well in town anyway. Slept well, although a minor niggle about spaces at top of room meaning can hear people going to toilet etc
No parking here, so I had to park on a street a few blocks away which I was a bit nervous about but nothing happened. Got seriously stuck in traffic/people on a couple of occasions trying to get to/from hostel. Its not really ideal if you're driving, but is manageable - try t get out early and back late!
About 10 minute walk to town centre. The city was an unexpectedly hip place - lots going on here, with fantastic bars and restaurants, and a great little market. Lovely city.
All in all a great experience, and seriously good value. Well done guys!

For $21 a night, we got a private room with a private bathroom, towels, a light breakfast and maid service. It's hard to classify Abuelito as a hostel when the service is this good. The staff was extremely available and helpful, common areas were clean and comfortable, and the location wasn't bad (though it's a longer walk from the zocalo than most hostels seemed). The one caveat perhaps is that the place is small and walls are thin, so noise travels easily.

If you are interested in the indigenous population of Chiapas and know how to be respectful of others' cultures (and also know how to take propaganda with a grain of salt), I highly recommend the day trip with Cesar to Chamula and Zinacantan. So worth the 200 pesos!

And if you can spare a half hour, walk up Real de Guadalupe to the Iglesia del Cerro de Guadalupe (white church on a hill). The view is incredible.

I had booked a 3 night stay, but ended up leaving after two. The place itself is lovely, really clean and the staff are good.

However I ended up there at a time when a few young idiots were determined to keep everyone else awake most of the night. My room was right next to the kitchen, facing into the courtyard so my first night was pretty marginal and my second night was awful.

So if the other guests had been ok it would have been a really good place, but unfortunately for me that wasn't the case.

Room Tip: The rooms next to the kitchen aren't a good option if you want to sleep.

Thank you for your Review. We are happy to say that the room you speak of is no longer next to the kitchen since we have built a completely new Kitchen in a separate area(see the new pictures we added) offering more space and not affecting the guest rooms. We are sorry that you had this experience and would like to apologize to you knowing that we have taking the measures to fix this issue so NO more guests will have the same problem and have a greats nights sleep.

We again thank you for your Review, as it helps us to constantly improve The Posada del Abuelito.

Kind Regards

This was a great place to stay. Owners and staff were friendly, helpful and relaxed, beds were comfortable, everything was spotlessly clean. It was a little further from the centre than other hostels, but was close enough that I felt safe walking back at night. The central patio is cosy and a cool spot to hang out and meet people. Thanks!

$110 peso for a dorm with wifi, hot water that takes no time to heat (very important-its freezing), and home made bread and jam with a little fruit for breakfast.
The breakfast isnt really sufficent or as much as manh other hostels i went too, but as a bread lover, the toast and jam were really tasty. You can even buy the jam.
The girl was very welcoming and they have heaps of tours to choose from.
The wifi is non existent in the room (Major downfall) and there are 2 power outlets for 9 people in the room. The best hostels for me have outlets for each person and close to the beds.
I went on a tour to 2 towns, worth the $200 pesos. Heaps of information.
If i stayed in San Cristobel again Id try another hostel- just because there are so many-so might as well try a few. This one is nice but Im sure there are many nice ones in San Cristobel.

Thank you for you review it brought to our attention the lack of outlets in our dorm and we have upgraded this adding an additional 2 outlets per bed in the dorm as well as reading lamps.

The Wifi was also upgraded with new routers and range extenders allowing more access now!

And since your stay we have improved the Breakfast adding eggs and cereal, and even started making new flavors of our famous Jam and a new bread which is made by one of the best bread bakeries in Town(El Horno Magico).

The Posada del Abuelito is a historical home offering unmatched charm and beauty for the Price in San Cristobal. This has even been improved because as of April we finished a deal to buy the piece of land right next door that also once belonged to my great Grandfather Jose. We just finished the remodeling project as of Mid December 2013. This new addition is a huge improvement and the Grounds are truly beautiful and we also have a new large Kitchen now(See the new pictures we added)!

Kind Regards, and Hope to see you on your next stay to see firsthand these improvements thanks to your review.

A charming little hostal run by some sweet-as-miel French people. This place ideal for people who dont want a party-hard vibe but still like to be social and stay in a welcoming place. The shared bathrooms are one of the best ive experienced. Clean, spacious, nice decor and so hot you wont want to get out. The house-made, secret recipe jam for breakfast, is something special. The posada also provides excursion books and maps which will point you in the way of the best to see and try in San Cristobal - off the tourist beaten track, tried and true recommendations. Merci Abuelito!
