“Very clean, nice atmosphere”
Reviewed 24 November 2013

Rossco's is a nice hostel-- I really liked the large kitchen, really hot water, fireplace, and cleanliness. It can be quite cold in San Cristobal, and the wifi only works from the central area which is in the open air...Rossco's could add a warmer lounge area to keep guests from freezing! Included breakfast is nice, but for what you pay, toast, coffee, and fruit seems like they're skimping a bit. If you book online for the "discount" price of 80 pesos, know that you can only get your fourth night free if you stay at the regular price of 100/night (for the dorms). It's a bit misleading and gets you to believe they offer a great deal. Obviously, they are charging 80/night but marketing themselves as a fantastic deal giving out free nights.

We stayed in a twin room here which was secure. The grounds were lovely and well kept and the kitchen area was nice. The hostel staff tried to be helpful although their English wasn't great, but we got by with our rubbish Spanish!!

On the down side, I was absolutely freezing at night and could have done with extra blankets, I did totally underestimate the drop in temperature at night but I barely slept a wink in two nights. We also had a group of German lads in the room next to us and we could literally hear every word they said through the walls, every text they received, them going to the loo - everything! No hot water on two occasions which was very much needed after being freezing cold all night.

The other main concern was the location which at first seemed perfect, however it's slightly outside of the main area, though only by about 500m however we did have an incident with a guy trying to attack my friend on the walk home around midnight. The hotel staff said that this kind of thing was unheard of although we were also followed by two blokes the day before. We absolutely loved San Cristobal - it was pretty much our favourite place in Mexico - however I would urge women to keep their wits about them and try not to get home too late (which is a shame because the night life is great). Having said that, we may have just been unlucky and obviously these kind of things can happen anywhere.

I really liked this hostel, there was a good vibe. The hostel had a big courtyard with garden and in the middle a big fireplace. This is a good place to meet people. The rooms were ok, enough space. A downside where the bathrooms, there were outside and since it can be quite cold in San Cristobal this was not so nice.

The location of this hostel is good because it is on a quiet road but a short walk away from the lively city. Most of the communal areas of the hostel are outside so make sure you bring something warm, as it can be very cold in the morning and in the night. The bonfire every night is brilliant to keep you toasty and bring people together. Also the blankets for the beds they provide definitely keep you warm at night, and the dorms are clean and spacious. The breakfast is pretty good too. A couple of things that let this place down are that there are only 3 toilets and showers for all of the people in the dorms so there were queues every morning (slightly annoying when you need a wee and there are 3 people having a very long shower). Also there are no plug sockets in the dorms so you have to leave you phone/ laptop charging in the communal area, which was a bit of a pain. However the main reason I would recommend this hostel is because of the other travellers I met there, the place seems to attract really cool, friendly people that made my trip in San Cristobal special.

One more tip- the organised tours are good but look into doing some of them yourself or with a group of friends as you will spend a fraction of the price

I only stayed one night- 100 pesos plus 50 pesos key deposit. Except you dont get a key. The front door is always open-although there is people watching it, and the dorm is always open.
You need to bring a lock for your locker.
The wifi doesnt work in the room, and its freezing at night to sit outside where there is wifi.
The fire wasnt on the night I was there, one reason I actually went to the hostel.
Yes its close to everything, but San Cristobal is small- so everywhere is close to everything! Its actually not the closest hostel if you go out on the main strip- its actually one of the most furthest away. Theres no art market at night, so all the streets are pretty dark and lonely, safe, but actually a little distance away. Maybe 20-25min walk ish from the main bar street.
Big kitchen. Horrible breakfast- corn flakes covered in sugar (cant remember the brand) and white toast with jam. Thats your balanced breakfast. Yummmy.
Its ok, but there are many more hostels around to try, Id try another if I was you.

Had a great 2 night stay in February. The hostel was clean, large community kitchen, decent community living room, and a great bonfire every night. Its centrally located, only a few blocks from the zocolo. Breakfast was just toast ,coffee and some fruit, but overall, I really enjoyed this place. The shared room is pretty standard bunk beds with large private lockers. It was more spacious than many of the hostels that I have been in and there were warm blankets which was a nice perk. Booked online and paid less than $10 per person. Tours offered through the hostel were cheaper than we could find in town as well.
