Location, facilities, atmosphere, and the staff... oh, the staff makes this place unique.

However long you're planning to stay, if your itinerary allows it, you will stay longer. Just give it a try. You'll fall in love with it.

The location is perfect. Everything is at a walking distance. Safe.
The facilities are great. Clean, cozy. The 300-year old house gives this hostel a unique, strong personality. The bar in the backyard where you can make a fire is just sweet.

And breakfast... out of this world.
Not your typical, ordinary hostel breakfast.

Room Tip: Go for dormitory 10!

This is definitely the best hostel I've stayed at throughout all my travels in mexico and central america. Its really clean, the staff are amazing and super friendly, the breakfast is delish, and it is very centrally located. Its been open now for about a year, but they are always making improvements, and are very passionate about keeping the place top notch. It can be both a party place and just a chill relax place. Its nice because the bar is in this slightly exterior area, but the rest of the hostel is in a slightly separate location so you can have the best of both worlds. Its a pretty big place, but relatively easy to meet people in the common areas of the kitchen and the bar. I highly reccomend to anyone going through San Cris :)

Room Tip: I reccomend any of the dorms. The female one is really quite, and surprisingly so is the 16 person m...

Wow what a great place to stay. I planned on staying there for two weeks but ended up staying for over a month. The owners are awesome and care about every single guest. The hostel is clean with a very friendly staff. There's an awesome bar outside with a fire that is great for meeting other travelers or just hanging out and relaxing. I HIGHLY suggest Puerta Vieja whenever you are in San Cristóbal.

The staff are excellent people who genuinely care about what they do. The location is perfect. And the atmosphere is beyond description. All in a beautiful city that a great deal of us look forward to returning to.

I first arrived in Puerta Vieja while it was opening late in 2012. I thought I might stay a couple days. It wound up being a couple months learning Spanish while volunteering and a return trip through Chiapas the following year. And probably a few more. It's a hard thing to sum up in a review, but this place and these people have redefined what home is for me in my travels. And in a really good way.

It has all the things you'd expect from a good place to stay - clean rooms, clean bathrooms (with hot water!), a kitchen, good breakfasts, and great people close to the centre of the city. And then add good music, a small bar, and hammocks in a beautiful courtyard garden. (Yet the garden is far enough away from the sleeping dorms to not disturb sleeping guests later in the evenings). There's a lot to check out in the days, and it is within a block of the city square. When I returned in 2014 it was a great deal better than the first time I'd visited, and it had set my standards pretty high (the garden had really filled in, there were more dorms, and the addition of the beer fridge and a football table in the brick part of the garden - with the same core staff). But it's more than a wicked hostel, and you can only really understand this by staying there.

In the time I spent volunteering I frequently heard the questions and concerns of those passing through. Rarely (I can recall two or three times in total) were there ever any complaints and when there were they were resolved promptly. Yet those nights around the fire in the courtyard, sharing stories had me hearing from countless travellers who wished they had more time to stay longer. And many of them did.

Book a few days, see the sights, relax, and enjoy the vibes. If I'm passing through I might be on the other side of the fire with a Dos Equis amber.

Room Tip: Ask the front desk to show you around to find the room you're looking for. There are both privat...

It being in a great location, clean, safe and spacious is the least of what's great about this Hostel. The ambiance the staff creates makes it the best hostel I have ever stayed at. The bar and bonfire patio make it the best place to hang out, meet people and have a drink before, after or Instead of going out.

Incredibly good and friendly place!!!!

One of the best hostels during my 2-month-trip through Mexico. These guys are just doing it from the heart, you can tell. What a friendly and familiar atmosphere they created! You can already experience this atmosphere when entering through the "old door" right downtown into the big patio.

The rooms are nice and clean, the bathrooms are good and very clean also. Overall very good standard for a hostel! The kitchen is also very nice, the breakfast is killer good! You can choose from 2 options every morning, and its freshly made with love. Drinking water is also included in the price, which is awesome, so you don't have to buy a plastic bottle every day.
The garden is just wonderful, the hammocks to read, the garden to meet people and chat with them or just relax.
They have event nights, like campfire or table-soccer nights or ...or...or... you can just go out to town with the new friends you now have!
The staff is also very nice and friendly, they don't even feel like "staff", more like friends who happen to run this place :)

I really really liked staying at this place and I will definitely come back.

Muchas gracias por esta buena experiencia a SanCris! Nos vemos :)
