“My favorite museum in San Cristobal de las Casas”

Museo Centro Cultural Altos de Chiapas
Reviewed 14 August 2014

I loved this museum! The collections are divided by regional tribes and well displayed on both mannequins and in the stacks of drawers that can be pulled out to reveal example after example of regional clothing. Most of the collection is from the 1920s to present day. The drawer display allows you to closely examine the intricate embroidery and weaving without touching the fabric. The mannequins are also well done showing group scenes in various local clothing. The collection is on the second floor of an old convent (I believe) that has been beautifully renovated.

On the first floor, there is another museum with many archaeological artifacts and historic items from Spain.

The gift shop at the entrance is also well worth going into as you can examine some extremely well-made versions of the handicrafts you see all over town.

Definitely a must-do if you have any interest in fashion, history, sewing and culture.

Beautiful museum in old convent now restored really nicely except there needs to be a fountain. Textile collection from Francesco Pellizi is superb, but Chip Morris, who knows more about Mayan textiles than anyone, is not recognized for all his work with the Pellizi collection but the bank that sponsored the collection is. Money talks I guess, more than academic scholarship of our favorite expert.

The Museo Centro Cultural Altos de Chiapas, less than a year old at the time of my visit, offers an excellent overview of the history and culture of Highland Chiapas. The highlight for me was the textile collection, which includes pieces from Guatemala. The museum offers a tremendous introduction to the diversity and richness of Mayan weaving. The colors are spectacular, and the designs and techniques are extraordinary. The docents are very knowledgeable and friendly.
