“Aptly named Hotel! (La Joya.....'the jewel')”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

Many hotels over-rate themselves....and 'friends' do , as well. In this case...La Joya is simply impossible to over-rate! I have stayed in many of the worlds' best hotels....in more than 45 countries. I don't believe I have ever encountered the "degree" of concern...and care....and beauty !!! that John and Ann provide at La Joya. From 800 to 1200 thread count linens on all the beds ....to the gorgeous flower arrangements in both "public spaces" and the private rooms, themselves...to the quality of the silverware!!! To the original works of art that are spread through the Hotel....all of the most amazing quality (not local quality! but "world" quality!!!) to the genuine desire that John and Ann possess to assure each guest of his or her ultimate comfort. As well as "comfort".....the overall "serenity" and beauty of the hotel can not be surpassed. I have a friend who is more rich than any one person should be on this planet of ours....and he has not come up to the "level" that John and Ann have achieved in what is, after all, a space open to the Public. And it's not that he doesn't make extraordinary efforts to achieve the 'best possible' home environment that he can. He does! But very few people have the intrinsic good taste and sense to apply those things in ways that actually "provide" the things that normally only the most lucky people in the world are able to enjoy.
Ann and John have it all "at the ready" for anybody smart enough to take advantage of what they offer. If you are hesitant to pay a small amount of money 'more' than average hotels charge for "not very much of anything truly good"....don't be! You will NOT be disappointed on any level....and once you've checked in to La Joya...prepare yourself for never wanting to leave! Leaving is the only disappointing thing about La Joya! Located in the heart of beautiful San Cristobal, within walking distance of anything you might desire, my husband and I had the unique opportunity to stay with Ann and John in February. What a wonderful way to spend a birthday and anniversary. The modern feel as you enter the soothingly decorated foyer blends tastefully into the fine local furnishing, often handmade specifically for the feel of the room, amidst the many fine collections that John and Ann have accumulated through their own travels. The room was awesome, elegant and comfortable. A small enclosed porch off the bedroom allowed for silent reading with a view of the surrounding mountains. The bed was beyond comfortable, what can I say? I would snuggle in each night and not want to get up in the morning but the call of the gorgeous shower and fluffy towel more than made up for having to leave the bed. The staff were friendly and very helpful while the breakfast was incredibly tasty yet not overwhelming and more than you could eat. No matter what question that you had, either one could give an answer making for a fun-filled, interesting holiday. I look forward to my next visit to Chiapas, and you can be assured I will stay here then.

Ann and John, the hosts and owners of this hotel, did a wonderful job of ensuring that our needs were taken care of while we were in their hotel. We spent several days there and each breakfast was delicious and different from the others. The bed was so comfortable. Their local staff was wonderful too not only meeting our expectations but going beyond. San Cristobal and the surrounding area is very interesting and John and Ann know the cool places to visit that are both on and off the beaten path.

I had the pleasure of staying at La Joya Hotel for three nights with Ann and John. It was one of the most enjoyable and memorable stays my husband and I have experienced. From the locally made soaps in the bathroom, to the fireplace in our room, and the extremely comfortable beds, no detail was missed. The architecture and decor are a brilliant mix of local Chiapas design and artifacts from the owner's extensive travels throughout the world. Breakfast was excellent every morning and always something different. They are happy to creatively accommodate any dietary preferences (we are vegetarian). What struck me most is that its obvious from your first interaction with Ann and John that they want you to have the best experience possible and truly care about you. This extends from their hotel and out to surrounding areas where they give great travel suggestions, know several local guides and all the best shops and restaurants. You will never be disappointed to stay here!!

Room Tip: Each room is unique but comfortable. Contact Ann and John and they can suggest the best options depe...

I just returned from this luxury hotel, 7 days of pure joy. The owners will treat you extremely special with homemade breakfast, afternoon tea and treats and chocolates in your room. If that is not enough, you may never leave the comfortable beds and thick threaded linens. There are 5 unique rooms to select from, big bathrooms and fluffy towels. Pick a sitting room to read in from their broad collection of books or use the wifi and stay connected. They are your complete concierge serve, from getting a guide for a walking tour, or taking you to Palenque or Sumidero Canon. Anyway in the state of Chiapas is possible. I have only the highest praise for this elegant, luxury home away from home.

Room Tip: there is no bad room. Ask John or Ann for a personal recommendation for your preference in style.
