“Great Boutique Hotel, Super Staff”
Reviewed 9 January 2011

This is a small, tasteful boutique hotel. It's only a few blocks walk to the crafts market and church in one direction and about four or five blocks to a ton of restaurants and shops in the other direction.

The staff, especially Victor, spoke great English and were very friendly and helpful. The hotel has a delicious continental complimentary breakfast each morning and they also have other cooked breakfast options for a reasonable price. We ate dinner here twice, once in the restaurant and once they brought our dinner up to our room. Both times the food was good.

Our suite was really comfortable, very clean and nicely decorated. We had a wonderful fireplace and they provided firewood each day (additional firewood can be purchased for $4). We had a kitchen (equipped and drinking water provided), a very comfortable bed, lots of hanging space for clothes and suitcases, a safe deposit box and they also provided Italian toiletries. Our seven-year-old was traveling with us and they set up a single bed in the living room for him.

We enjoyed having a glass of wine in the evening by the big fire in the restaurant/bar area before going out into the chilly December night-time weather. There is also a garden courtyard area with a hammock and chairs that is available for relaxing with a book during the day (they have a selection of books you can borrow by the frontdesk). The wi-fi worked well too. They have free parking for guests as well.

I definitely recommend this very friendly and well run hotel. I think our rate per night was about $120 - really good value. We enjoyed our stay here and would gladly return again.

This is our third trip to San Cristobal and we stayed in Casa Morada for two weeks. The hotel has villas (1 and 2 bedroom) with a sitting area, fireplace, kitchenette and bath, and there are several hotel rooms with just bed and bath. Newly built and well designed, it is convenient to the pedestrian walkway that crosses San Cris, Na Bolom ( a "must see" in San Cris), the artisans market and major landmarks. Very easy to get a taxi to where you want to go, too.

The staff are friendly without being intrusive and go out of their way to make you feel at home. There are beautiful local textiles in the rooms (bedspreads and curtains), the villa kitchens make it easy to have breakfast at leisure (refrig.,cooktop, micro, coffee maker, purified water).

Our villa was on the second floor with a balcony overlooking the garden. We used our fireplace or the bedroom electric heater for cool nights. There is a restaurant and small bar.

Owner speaks perfect English and has lived in San Cris for a long time. He has his own doctor, who is English speaking, on call for hotel guests. We didn't need the doctor but were glad to know this has been set up.

With 8 villas and 2 regular hotel rooms it is quiet and personal. We are planning to reserve for next year. By far the nicest place we have found in San Cris....our home away from home.

We enjoyed a lovely spacious room complete with fire, kitchen, sofa. Breakfast is served in the city in a good restaurant 10 minutes walk away, although I understand a restaurant is being built on premises. Our room was very quiet, and the service was excellent. Due to Mexicana's demise we were unable to make our first night but the staff were very accommodating and did not charge us.

My wife and I looked at a few options of where to stay in San Cristobal, but we were glad we picked the Casa Morada. It's just under a ten minute walk into town (downhill) and this was fine by us as we were far enough away from the louder central streets but close enough to everything you would care to see in San Cristobel.

Our room was on the first floor, it had a kitchen and dining table, sitting area, bedroom and bathroom / sink area. We had a small balcony with chairs to relax on which overlooked the courtyard which had a very comfortable hammock!!

The room was beautifully decorated, in fact we stayed in 5 hotels around Mexico on our stay, and this room had by far the most character. There were murals on the fireplace and above the bed, Mayan textiles on the walls and the bedspread and cushions too. There isn't air conditioning, however it's not needed. During the day it was mid-thirties, but as the sun sets it gets a little chilly due to the mountains, and I was wearing jeans and t-shirt & cardigan by the evening. They also provide firewood and matches to light a fire should you want to.

All around San Cristobal the sound of cockerels can be heard, and we did hear some early in the morning during our stay, but to me that added to the atmosphere of the place. This is semi-rural Mexico at its best.

The staff were very friendly, and ordered us taxi's as and when we needed them.

The hotel is also close to Na Bolom, which is a must for any visit to San Cristobal.

Overall this is a fantastic hotel - highly recommended.

Villas moradas is a very nice hotel with really helpful staff. a couple of problems you should be aware of. they are currently under construction in the main single unit buildings and the noise starts at 7:30 am. they switched us apartments to a quieter building but not until we asked. there are no screens on the window so you get mosquitos and spiders in the apartment (not sure if this is common everywhere here in the city). there is no air conditioning. its not hot in the apartments because of the brick and tile but air conditioning will help with the sound of the roosters from the next door neighbours howling all day and night.

Like i said -- staff was great, very safe and cute apartments but a few problems

We spent two nights in very nicely appointed villa last month. It's an easy walk to downtown (less than ten minutes to the main square), but is far enough away that it's quiet at night -- we were awakened by roosters, not people. The men at the front desk were extremely helpful -- from recommending restaurants for breakfast (la Casa del Pan was our favorite) to arranging transportation, to orienting us with maps of town. The villa was comfortable, and immaculately clean (we walked past an open door to another room and saw a housekeeper on the floor vaccuuming under the bed for quite awhile), and nicely decorated with unique touches. Firewood was assembled in our fireplace each night (all we had to do was light a match -- or we could have called the front desk and they would have done it for us). There was a large water cooler (garrafon) in the kitchen. Plenty of hot water (once it warmed up) in the shower. Clean , clean clean. Quaint, cute, pleasant. I would stay here again any time.

One note: Just because this is the highest-rated hotel in San Cristobal on Tripadvisor does NOT mean that taxi drivers from the Tuxtla Airport know where it is. It's small, and a little off the beaten track, and quite non-descript from the outside (don't let that fool you!)Make sure to have the address if not a map with you when you first arrive!

If you want a spacious, attractive, modern, and comfortable hotel near the center of town, but enough of a little walk to be away from the noise, Villa Casa Morada is the place. The staff are helpful with any request from where to buy something to scheduling a guide for the small nearby villages. We stayed a week and felt grateful for our small suite and kitchen. This was exactly the kind of place to use as a base for exploring San Cristobal and surrounding towns.
We came "home" each day to a relaxing and beautiful set of rooms.
