“Terrible!!”
Reviewed 18 May 2014 via mobile

Cons:
Misleading advertising!, first, the picture that they show of the pool it's not from the hotel, the rooms are cleanish, the wifi it's free only in the lobby (not available in the rooms), the bed was pretty hard and awful, mosquitoes bothering all night because the windows doesn't have mosquito nets, the water in the shower was warm for like 10 minutes, they don't accept credit card or have room service, for just 9-15 extra dlls you an find a better hotel across the street.
Pros:
Nice attention by the staff, price is cheap and locations it's great.

It was life saving experience to finally find a hotel in Veracruz where the receptionist spoke English! very well located, café de la parroquia nearby, it was an amazing choice for us. Our room was clean and with a very nice street view. Although is a very busy street during the day, it was quite by night. We absolutely recommend it! The price was around 35 usd , perfect for our travelling budget.

Room Tip: Rooms on second floor are large and sunny

The hotel is ok for the price, it has a good location and it is clean. However, I'm not so sure about the staff since I got into troubles with one of the receptionists. My friends needed to store their luggage somewhere so I offered them my room as I was about to stay one more night in Veracruz. The receptionist who was in charge in the morning allowed us to leave the luggage in my room but when we got back for it in the afternoon, a different receptionist wanted to charge me extra 200 pesos for two additional persons in the room. (But only after she had let them to actually carry the luggage into the lobby, she probably thought it over, meanwhile.) Obviously, she intended to keep the money for herself, not for the hotel, so we made her to call her boss and inform her about it and she was forced to give me at least 100 pesos back.

Decent Lobby and very cheap rooms but The rooms were disgusting. Mold on ceiling, dust everywhere, rotting shower, mildew on shower curtain. AC Loud and non functioning. paperthin walls. The last straw before I ran out of there was the stained sheets and pillow cases.Beyond disgusting.I expected this in the slums of the world or in a scary movie but there's no words for the condition of the rooms. There is no way anybody can genuinely accept money in exchange for these type of accomodations. Shame on you! AVOID this hotel at all costs. I had to give this place at least one star but there should be negative stars as an option

Room Tip: AVOID this hotel at ALL cost

I was travelling alone in Mexico for 2 weeks and spent only a couple of days in Veracruz. Stumbled upon El Faro. Centrally located, with cafes and shops nearby. Free wifi (very important!!!) Staff are very friendly and helpful. The owner is a very caring host who speaks fluent English. She made good recommendation on restaurants and things to do, not only in Veracruz but also other places like Mexico City (my next destination). They helped me with the bus tickets, made sure I know how to get to the bus station, etc. I felt very much at home. Their personal touch made a great difference! Genuinely cheap and cheerful! Rooms are clean too. It's one of the best hotels I've stayed in Mexico!

The inexpensive hotels in Veracruz that we found on Tripadvisor did not excite us. We also consulted a couple of popular guide books and had a list of a handful of affordable hotels to try in the center of town. We looked at rooms in two of them but they were dark and uninviting so we moved on, walked past another that looked no better and then headed for El Faro (The Lighthouse). It was brighter and cheery in comparison and the manager seemed nicer too. We looked at two rooms and decided to stay there. The other two hotels wanted around 200 pesos or a tad more a night for two with fan. El Faro was $300 but seemed so much nicer and had cable TV (big deal), A/C (you are on the Gulf coast), larger rooms, and was quite clean. There was also free coffee in the lobby in the morning. The previous reviewer to TA wrote in French and seemed to have some complaints which we did not find. It was good if you wanted a budget place.
The El Faro Hotel was about four easy blocks from the center of town where you can hear music most every night and very close to the Malecon and the harbor, the Gran Cafe coffeehouse which is a must if you are in Veracruz, the actual old lighthouse, and literally next door to the Naval Museum. Across the street is a grocery store for any needs you might have. Many restaurants are nearby too. We strongly recommend that you walk about four blocks away from town on the same street where the hotel is located (Avenida 16 de Septiembre). You will be walking parallel to the malecon and eventually come to two very nice but affordable restaurants called Sanborcitos (no, definitely not Sanborns) and Lolitas. We ate at both of them and they were very good and friendly.
The El Faro is about four stories high with a few rooms on each floor. Because it is a few blocks away from the very center of town it is quieter than other places must be. It is affordable and clean and we were happy to be there for three nights.
