You leave XTC Dive Center at 7:00 AM and an hour or so later , the boat captain drops you off for your first dive (with A.J. If you're lucky). And it is amazing! Our dive group of four was followed for almost an hour by two very friendly and very curious reef sharks (reach out and touch close)...then we were were visited by a curious and toothy three foot barracuda. We saw rays, conchs, jaw fish, grouper, reef fish of every color and variation including dancing yellow headed jaw fish who performed for us. Then, we had a visit to the fishing village, a visit with the local troupe of iguana ( they gathered like chickens at feeding time), and then had a visit with three American saltwater crocodiles. After another splendid dive, we headed back to Xcalak ( the wonderfully charming dirt streets fishing village where everyone speaks to you and the vegetable truck bring groceries three days a week), tired, happy, and ready to come back again to this amazing and pristine very protected diving area. A fantastic day, a fantastic experience, and an experience not to be traded for any luxury valet diving experience . But, if you are looking for "just like home" tourist amenities, go to Cozumel and the Holiday Inn.

I had planned for this to be the highlight of my trip diving in Mahahual, but it didn't turn out that way, thanks to some nonsense from either the Mexican gov't or the dive shop (Dreamtime).
It's 1.5 hrs to the reserve from Mahahual.

We did our first dive & then landed on the island to eat lunch & watch the iguanas & crocodiles while our lobster was being grilled. The first dive was nice & fairly deep & the little island was cute for a short while. I really like iguanas, so I was quite happy to have something to photograph while waiting.

We we not allowed to do the second dive & the divemaster told us that the gov't officials said we had to leave the reserve because they were going to exterminate for rats, on a Saturday afternoon. Sounded highly stupid to me, but, what else can you do.

However, I have since spoken with another dive operator in the area who mentioned that not all tour operators actually have the proper permits to go to Chinchorro & that we were likely turned away because our permits were not in order (ie, the first dive was before the island & they could get away with that, but once on the island, the park personnel nixed then next dive due to permit problems). We had our numbered park wristbands & filled out an official-looking form, but I don't know how exactly to determine who really is an officially, permitted tour operator, so keep that in mind & try to ask questions. If you Google Chinchorro Banks diving, you can find other operators besides Dreamtime, which I am now rather suspicious of, unfortunately.
