The food was delicious and service was outstanding. The chef came to the table to read the menu, and answer questions.

Classic formal setting including white linen
Very attentive service
Good wine choices by the glass

We were the only ones dining

Paolo salad bit on the oily side needed vinegar to offset

Spinach lasagna unremarkable

Duck cooked very well though current reduction was a bit too sweet
Side fusilli with tomato had too much garlic and salt

Homemade gelato stellar
Cappucino also good

Acceptable but not great dining

“Very enjoyable”
Reviewed 13 April 2014

Let me start this review by stating - we did not come to Cancun for the food. We came for the sun and the beach. With that said, Locanda Paola is a perfectly delightful restaurant.

Located off the "strip" (Hotel Zone) just inside the city limits of Cancun proper, the restaurant is a beautifully apportioned place with a real "presence." We went on a Saturday night (at the North American dinner hour of 6) and we were the only table in the place. The servers were kind enough to move us to a table in the back of the restaurant which afforded a sort of intimate dining space.

The food and wine is nicer than I expected - with a mix of traditional provincial Italian dishes and new-world fusion. We started our meal with an antipasti platter. Be certain to ask for the antipasti, as it is not listed on the menu and a true specialty of the house. We paired our first course with a nice prosecco. Dinner was a mix of seafood specials and traditional pasta dishes. At every course the wait staff were ever attentive and made certain we had everything we needed - including accommodating our 4-year olds dislike of "green" fetuccini (she is a true creature of habit).

The crowning jewel of the evening for the kids was the home-made gelato. The crown jewel for us adults was the house-made Limocello. Oh my goodness - that was some of the best I've ever had.

Do yourself a favor, venture outside of the hotel zone (take the bus) and go to Locanda Paola. You will not be sorry.

“A Wonderful dining experience......again !!”
Reviewed 31 March 2014

When in Cancun we usually go see Paolo. The food is fabulous, and the service is wonderful.

My wife and I went Friday night and as usual , we were greeted by the owner Paolo. He welcomed us back and asked how long it had been. Although 5 months, seemed like yesterday. We asked for a suggestion for wine, and he brought us a wonderful Italian varietal we had never had before (so good in fact, we ordered a second bottle, and took another one home.. ) Anyway...he suggested fresh swordfish, and said he got some clams in earlier that evening. We of course ordered both. The fish was cooked perfectly with a wonderful sauce of tomato, olives and capers, and the clams served with pasta , olive oil and a hint of garlic....they were to die for. We always go back, and we are never disappointed. Go to this restaurant....you will be happy you did.

“Good food but choose carefully! ”
Reviewed 30 March 2014 via mobile

An easy bus ride up from the Hotel Zone, Locanda Paolo is located in a converted house near Superama, as are several other very good restaurants (see my recent reviews of Du Mexique and La Dolce Vita). They have a nice menu with many interesting choices and the wine list is small but varied. Wine by the glass is available but you have to ask. The food we ordered was well-prepared and nicely presented. The range of portion sizes, however, was unexpected. My wife's yellowfin tuna with an olive tampinade was large enough that we took a lot back with us and both shared it for dinner the next night too. It was fresh and I recommend it without reservation. On the other hand, my US$38 "Surf and Turf" consisted of a small piece of veal and three shrimp. Despite the fact that it was prepared well and had nice flavors, it was gone in a few mouthfuls and most certainly was not worth the cost. If you get as far as dessert, however, the dark chocolate gelato was spectacular and the cappuccino was nicely done. So, try the fresh fish, avoid the Surf and Turf, and leave room for dessert and you won't be disappointed.
