My husband and I had the best 10 days in this resort all inclusive. Staff is amazing, they make you feel incredible, comfortable. The part that I love is any place you go there is a Palace where you receive same benefit and amazing welcome love it.

Stayed: July 2014

I am very happy you enjoyed your stay. This is what we do and it is always rewarding to know we have done it well.

Indeed, the idea behind different types of hotels which you can visit in the same destination is for an added experience. It has always been one of Palace's strong points.

Thank you for noticing and taking advantage of.

Best feelings,

The Short:
*postcard beach, infinity pools
*food available 24 hours, above AI quality (good to excellent)
*staff friendly, professional, accommodating,
*adult only, couple focused - mellow/relaxing vibe, multiple ages, all shapes and sizes (don't be shy!), quiet in the evenings
*rooms are large, comfortable, great views in most rooms
*recommend for couples looking for a relaxing, low key holiday
*feel free to message me with questions (I'm not a member - no bias :) )

Our context: seasoned travellers, multiple counties, AIs in Puerto Aventuras, Playa del Carmen, Punta de Mita, Varadero, Cancun, Majorca, Kenya. Couple in our 30s.

The Long:

Rooms: Be careful what you book. Most (but not all) the rooms are ocean view. Upon realizing we'd booked some sort of 'resort view' room, it is best to email the hotel directly. Upgrading costs were sent in an email (nice to have it in writing). However, upon arrival it was less expensive to upgrade in cash. We were able to view several rooms before choosing. The 'basic' ocean view is more than adequate. Floor 6 (concierge) has loungers on the balcony...but (perhaps it was just the one we saw) the balcony was somewhat shared (connected, but no dividing wall). It was also much darker than the ocean view room. In the end, we lucked out with a crazy deal on a presidential suite (rm 333). This was a corner room that maxed privacy, two balconys, one with partial lagoon view with the outdoor jacuzzi. This suite came with a living room and dining room, separate bedroom area. Perks included a free beach bag, premium liquor in the dispenser (and a quick phone call got us the brands we desired), Chi hair products, hairdryer and diffuser, hair straightener, iphone dock, free and fast internet access, nightly petit fours (so yummy!), espresso machine, 25 min complimentary back massage, complimentary beach diner, and special additional room service menu that let you order from a limited selection from the restaurants (worth it for us - a large reason for the upgrade). Beds are great, pillow menu available for conceirge level. Very frustrated by the light over my bed that appeared to be on some sort of timer - some nights it would stay off, other nights it would come on during the night....one horrible night it came on fice times...called maintenence, who could find no problem. That said, our second choice would have been the standard ocean view room. They are large, with jacuzzis, and great views as well.

Pool/Beach:
-both are very clean and well kept
-there is an 'active' pool and two small quieter pools. All are infinity pools and overlook the beach. Gorgeous!
-both have designated bars and some of the best service poolside we've encountered
-lunch can be ordered to your poolside lounger from a limited menu (quesedillas, burgers, ribs, try the fish sticks!); there is also a live grill (variety of meats, fish, burgers, hotdogs)daily
-chefs also serve poolside snacks that change daily - including veggies, mixed fruits, in house ice cream (yum white chocolate and coffee flavor!), fruit bars (cocunut is delish)
-poolside loungers with umbrellas tended to be taken up by 8:30am, however, loungers are readily available
-tip - the restrooms by the small pool behind the bar are airconditioned, the main ones are not. Both are always in clean condition
-one of our favorite things was there are ALWAYS beach loungers and umbrellas - they set them up for you at your request
-Cancun beach is your typical postcard; however, the waves make the ocean difficult to limited for swimming. Lots of people losing their sunglasses with the force of the waves.

Food/Drinks:
-Drinks have plenty of variety, and premium available (e.g. Grey Goose) if you ask
-drinks we had included: Cancun caribe, ocean pacifico, mayan riviera, elecric lemonade, blue bayou, miami vice, mojitos/strawberry mojitos, mango daqueris, multiple flavors of margaritas, dirty monkey, hurricane and bumblebee shots, kir royale, appletinis, watermelon martinis, chocolate martinis...don't hesitate to try something new...it was a good vacation...:)
-the bartenders will happily suggesst drinks, or even make you a drink if you descrie it (I love the burnt toast martini in the evenings - I pulled up the recipe on my iphone and was happily sipping one moments later)
-do make sure you are consuming LOTS of water as well...

Breakfast is buffet style and was one of our favorite meals. Some items included: french toast, pancakes, hashbrowns, sausages, bacon, chillaquiles, eggs/omelettes to order, cereal, yoghurt, deli meats and cheeses, smoked salmon, pastries, numerous fresh juices (try the jugo verde or watermelon juice), and deserts. A pleasant surprise was the variety of fresh fruit, including exotics like dragonfruit, fresh mago, fresh papaya, lychee, plums, peaches, strawberries, pinapple.

Lunch again was buffet, or poolside as outlined above. The indoor buffet usually had a made to order taco station, grilled meats (including steaks), and grilled seafood (salmon, basa, squid, bay scallops).

Dinner is restaurant only - but there were no reservations or line ups. Huge bonus! There is a steak restaurant/buffet sides, Mexican, Italian, and Oriental. Daily specials also change. Confession - we never made it to the Steak as we were so thrilled with our other choices. The beach dinner was included with our upgrade, and while it was very romantic, we preferred the restaurant quality food.

Mexican - seemed the least occupied, but I'm not sure why? This had the BEST steaks (filet mignon) out of any of the resort - highly recommend. We did not eat here as frequently as we would have liked, as we tended to load up on Mexican options for breakfast or lunch.

Italian-most popular/romantic. Be aware - the dress code of long pants is enforced. My husband was quite embarrased about being sent back to change (honestly, they mishandled this) - he was wearning linen capris he had worn to the same restaurant two nights before, but was told to chnage and come back....with his linen pants that are 6 inches longer. A better way to handle this would have been to seat and serve us, and suggest next time to recommend long pants. He was wearing a collared shirt, and was not underdressed. This was compounded by couples in line behind us. However, food was excellent, the service spotty (serving cheese platter before drinks order). Recommend eggplant appie, beef carpaccio, four cheese soup, shrimp main, carbonara pastas (get it as a main with shrimp), and beef entres. I had a misfire with the lamb - three attempts to serve it medium rare (one hockey puck, two raw) - left and went to the Mexican for a good steak instead. Deserts okay - have the mexican coffee. Desserts surprisingly nicer at the buffets.

Oriental - appetizers are the highlight of their menu. The mains are okay and bland, which is surprising as the appies are outstanding quality. Favorites included tuna tartare, banana rolls, nube rolls, raw beef/ponzu. Try the fried ice cream.

At times, we would 'mix and match' dinner, going to one place for appetizers, and a different for mains/deserts.

Brunch and Tea/snacks are also available, as is room service (24hr). However, the room service menu is somewhat limited and lacking in quality compared to what is available at the buffet or restaurants. You will never be hungry.

Activities:
-beach volleyball, pool volleyball, water aerobics, guessing games, throw the ball through a hoop in the pool
-the activity staff are good at learning names and getting involved; however, it was greatly appreciated that a 'no thanks' was also good enough to be left alone. We have been at other resorts where you feel badgered - here was not the case (thank you).
-evening entertainment (we did not see much) included: piano bar/lounge, karaoke, Michael Jackson show, Carribean show, fire show (on the beach), magician,

Timeshare:
-yes, these are available. They try to get you to 'tour our other properties' and 'attend a presentation'. We were very pleased that one firm 'no thank you' was all it took.
-if you do want to view the other properties, there is a twice free daily shuttle to Moon Palace (2500 rooms and giant!), use your resort credits to check out their Isla Mujeres property (or catch the ferry yourself), or use the bus 1$US each way to check out their family resort Beach Palace. We did go to BP, but only lasted the morning. The food was WAY better (buffet wise at least) at SP, and the lound/kiddie atmosphere was not for us. However, it's nice to know that if you get restless you can visit any of the sister properties on your own (your own transport) without committing to a timeshare presentation

Resort Credits:
-not sure why these are so controversial? They are very clear that you can only use a maximum of $500 towards spa (we did one couples massage, pedicure, and mens haircut)
-there is 16% charge on what you use - this is not free. However, it's at a VERY reduced rate if you do the math. (Our couples massage was around $60US for the both of us, 80 mins).
-these would be of great value if you are new to the area to use towards heavily discounted excursions (Xelha, Xcharet, snorkelling, Isla Mujeres, etc)
-we always signed a receipt in advance and knew what the costs were - no surprises

Staff:
-SP shines in their well trained staff! Bravo!
-we were especially impressed that there was NO different treatment, regardless of what color wristbands people were wearing, or the amount of tipping
-we tend to watch and observe and not tip to see 'genuine' service, and distribute larger, personal tips towards the end of our trips. Everyone has a different philosophy - I'm simply pointing out the service quality never waivered
-special standouts were wait staff poolside (and there were many over 14 days), from the gentleman who made my special lunch order of conchinita quesedilla materialize, to Lesli who works tirelessly and pleasantly on multi houred shifits. The woman at the breakfast buffet (M?) who gave me daily spanish lessons, and always told me to 'watch my step' (there is one stair..lol). Irma was a standout in the salon for massages, between the four we had.
-the only other place that matched for service was Dubai - that's a high compliment

Recommendations for Mr.Winkler to consider:
-ensure the balcony furniture, especially in the presidential suites, is not literally in tatters
-reasonable felxibility on both room service menus (e.g. subbing shrimp for chicken, or a different pasta sauce). When dealing directly with the restaurants, these were happily accommodated, but the room service phone people were very rigid with no substitutions
-the wine is sub par for the AI menu - for such a classy resort, not even one was passable. I know there is incentive to upgrade, but this was disappointing
-other activities could include yoga, zumba/water zumba, stretching, wine tasting, (we've had these at other adult AIs)
-longer stays with the increase in resort credits should also be an increase in spa credits; we would have used it more if that were the case

Our sincerest thank you - we are looking forward to booking our next stay! This was our favorite AI stay - which we don't say lightly.

Sun Palace has been paid a number of compliments but never before been compared to Dubai. It is a high standard you've set and we will break this one as well.

One thing about room service: In traditional hotels this service is quite expensive and sub-used except for snacks and breakfast. In our all inclusive environment Room Service is second only to the Alamo, which by virtue of serving all breakfasts and lunches, as well as some dinners owns the first place. So yes, we have to have some rules on what and when to serve. Otherwise we'd botch it up with everyone. I hope you understand.

I enjoyed reading your comments as they are immediately obvious to be set down by someone who has traveled far and wide. These type of reviews are very interesting material for Managers.

Please, do let me know when you will be coming back as soon as you know so. It will be a pleasure to meet you.

My sincere highest sentiments,

My husband and I just got back from our honeymoon, and we really loved this hotel. We upgraded to a concierge level room and the view is so gorgeous- the water is turquoise by the shore. The double jacuzzi is so big it could fit 4. We had turndown service every night, and the staff is what makes this hotel so special. They go above and beyond to make a fabulous stay: the pool staff, wait staff, spa staff, cleaning staff, receptionist staff, etc.

The food was very good. We recommend the Italian restaurant (i loved the spinach salad and the beef) and the Oriental restaurant (great for drinks and sunset and the food was also very nice as well). The buffet each day is abundant and delicious.

For our excursion we did the 4 cenotes tour-awesome! zip line, rappel, cliff jump and kayak. We'd like to do the whale shark trip and Chichen Itza excursion next time. The only drawback is many of the excursions take 6-9 hours, and we just wanted to relax this trip.

Heads up, when they ask you to go to either beach palace or moon palace for the presentation about the palace group (similar to timeshares), it takes well over the 90 minutes they quote. We were there for about 4 hours. it was cool to see another resort, but i would've rather spent my time elsewhere.

you can't go wrong at this hotel! great pools, food, staff & rooms. :) and adults only so there's a chill vibe at one pool and the other pool has water activities and fun music.

Room Tip: We saw a couple of concierge rooms which were both nice. They had a more direct view of the ocean, b...

It is our privilege and honor to host a honeymoon.
We get the opportunity to be forever present in your memories Who wouldn't kill for such a chance?

Seeing the activities you did already made me tired. You are all movement!

The whale shark swimming is a very long affair. Maybe worth staying overnight in Holbox, the little island where you set off from. Just le me know when you intend to come back to do this and I'll see that you get whatever literature is available.

Thank you for sharing your memories with us! We are really most honored by this.

Best wishes,

The best hotel i had ever been in, perfect service, you want something- you get it and pretty fast. Very good restaurants, Excellent food. The rooms are comfortable. The all included feature turn out to be mostly foods and drinks, anything and around the clock.
Some things we didn't like:
The vegetables in the buffet get frozen, to bad..
The credit points they are offering are not useful, bottem line all the activities are still turnouts quite expensive. As a customer that makes me feel Cheated and i prefer they wouldn't offer it at all...

While you are very gracious in your comments towards us, I would like to take the opportunity to comment on what you didn't much care for:
Food hygiene rules command that al raw vegetables be at no more than 6°C. It is almost impossible to keep all things at even temperatures in a buffet so we tend to err on the side of caution. Our containers are probably at 1 or 2 °C and if you get the produce at the bottom or a plate that has been emptied of its upper vegetables then yes, it does take s few minutes for the food to thaw.

Credits are an add on. I would like to think that we give you your money's worth so the usage of credits is not obligatory. But 16 % of anything's price should be at least a passable deal.

Your comments are interesting to us and certainly do much to point us in the correct way to continued improvement. Thank you so muc for your kind feed-back.

Cordially,

We booked Sun Palace based on it's Trip Advisor rating for our first trip to Cancun. We were pleased with the accommodations - the room was terrific and the view was simply spectacular. Ocean view meant ocean view. This is the adults only property for them, so lines were non- existent and peace and quiet ruled the day. The servers were wonderfully attentive and very engaging.

We enjoyed our meals at the oriental lounge and the alamo, but wouldn't suggest the food was amazing. We went off property three times to visit highly rated restaurants and were pleased to spend about $100-$150 for those dinners. (Navios across the street is terrific at sunset, and Peter's and Locando Paulo were well worth the $20 cab fare to the edge of the hotel zone).

The alcohol was plentiful and pretty good while at the beach or pool, and we used our resort credits to enjoy some nicer wines in the evening. We did just one tour - Isla Mujeres - and it was terrific. We snorkeled and did some shopping in the market there. The snorkeling was nice but the markets were hot and seemed to consist of the same things. We were pleasantly surprised by the entertainment provided by our guide on the return ferry trip...he made the 45 minutes fly by and created some great memories for us.

You had nothing but good things to write. I wonder then about the 4 points grading. There must have been something amiss. Would you let me know?

I really think you have the right idea. At least once during a week's stay I would recommend trying one of the terrific restaurants that Cancun has to offer. After all, you can hop on a bus and get there very safely.

You certainly know the ropes. That is always a plus and makes for great travel experiences.

We have visited couple of years ago but still remember it as best hotel we have stayed in. Couldn't fault customer service. Everyone was very friendly, helpful and efficient. Lovely room with ocean view.
Food was fresh and tasty.
As it was medium size hotel it felt quite cozy and members of staff would recognise us after few days.
We have taken advantage of resort hotel credit which was actually real deal not like in other hotels. We use it towards trips, spa treatments but other options were available.
We were also allowed to take part in releasing turtles into the ocean! Unforgettable.
I hope one day we will return to San palace.

An undoubted plus of smaller hotels is that by virtue of the lesser number of guests, employees can really concentrate on remembering not only names but more importantly, preferences. This always leaves a good taste.

Thank you fo taking advantage of the resort credits.

When you return, I hope the turtle season will have been more prolific than this one and you will get to release not one but a number of hatchlings. Always such a joy!

Thank you for your visit and awaiting your next one.

I want to apologize upfront for this long review, but I like to be thorough and give as much information as possible because that's what I enjoy when I read other reviews.

I just wanted to say this first before I actually got into my review. Everyone has their own opinions about things, but these negative comments that people are saying are too petty for me. I was on trip advisor for 6 months checking the reviews for this hotel before I went on vacation. When I got to the Sun Palace, I said to my husband really? This is what people are complaining about?? The paint chipping from the building, tile missing from the pool, lack of beach loungers, bad food, etc. Then when I got back and read about the only negative thing was a key to work the lights?? (I felt it was no big deal because all you had to do when you came back into your room was lift up the key from the slot. To me....it was no different than coming in a flipping on the light switch!) I'm so glad I didn't let any of those negative comments change my mind about taking this vacation to this beautiful hotel.

Stayed 7/9-7/14 to celebrate our honeymoon.

They greet you with a nice COLD towel which was heavenly being how it was really humid when we arrived, and they give a flower to the ladies. Once we got inside, they offered us something to drink, and gave us some champagne. Very friendly from the time we stepped foot out of the van.

The check-in process was a breeze. First we went and sat with a staff member that asked us some questions and explained to us how the resort credits work. Yes! they did go over the credits and if they don't, just ask them how it works. I had been doing my research already so I knew about paying the tax. In my opinion, another complaint for many but not for me....paying the tax! This was much cheaper than the actual price! If you use all the credits depending on how long you stay, we had $1500, it would only cost you $240 at the end of your stay!!! It would have costed much, much more if they didn't offer the credits. If you don't want to use them... don't! It was totally worth it for us! We only used some of the credits and have a credit for the remaining balance. You have a year to use them if you choose to come back. Everything was fully explained to us but unfortunately, I don't remember the gentlemen's name who took care of us : ( After that check -in process we went to get our room.

Yes! they do ask you if you are interested in going on a tour to the Moon Palace to listen to a presentation to see if you're interested in becoming a member. We were NOT pushed into going. However, we did go to check it out and they offered us $300 non-taxable spa credit and they paid for our cab ride to and from. We came back whenever we wanted. It was not for us this time but they were friendly and did not get mad when we said no. The only downfall was that it was 2 hours out of your day but it didn't matter to us because we spent the whole day there and came back at night.

The overall staff at Sun palace is such a pleasure! Everywhere you go you're greeted with Hola. When I came home I felt like something was missing! lol Estebaan who works in the store was exceptional!!! He went out of his way to make sure that I got what I needed without any hesitation. We really appreciated the great customer service he showed us. Alfredo, the chef in the Alamo for breakfast, just put a smile on my face because he knew right away what kind of eggs I wanted. The two ladies who gave us our facials were wonderful!!! I can't remember there names off the top of my head though : ( but I would remember if I heard the names again. The facial was so relaxing we fell asleep! : ) Jose, the waiter in the lobby bar was such a good sport. Our first night after the Ryan Oaks show, a bunch of people got together in the lounge and wore him rugged! He came over and checked on us and sometimes...all we had to do was look at him and he had the next round of drinks at our table. The whole staff even though I didn't catch many names were wonderful!! I was never unhappy with the way the staff took care of us. It was such a pleasure to be around them.

Food-The food was enjoyable. We had alot of delicious meals. I only had one bad meal that I did not like but everything else was delicious. The steak restaurant-- my steak absolutely melted in my mouth! and the Italian and Oriental restaurants didn't disappoint. I should have came back looking green with all of the delicious guacamole that I ate! I wished I could have brought some back with me!

Pool-The pools were absolutely beautiful! I will say that the lounge chairs by the pool do go rather quickly, especially if your looking to be out in the sun. If not, then there are plenty of chairs in the shade. I have to say that our favorite pool was the "indoor" pool. Even though it is outside, it is covered so it's considered the indoor pool. The reason why it's our favorite is because there was never anyone in there when we went, but mostly....it was the coldest pool! It felt wonderful after a day of excursions in the sun. We looked forward to taking a dip in it everytime.

Rooms-They were very nice. The double person hot tub was great! They do have liquor in the room. We didn't care for what was already there but you could call and get what ever you wanted. We drank mostly frozen drinks so we didn't really care what was in there. The refrigerator had some beer and sometimes, that's just what my husband felt like having.
Turn down service was wonderful! Every night a piece of chocolate was left on each of the night tables. It was nice to come back to our room and our bed has been taken care of. The beds were very comfortable. I never had a bad night's sleep.

Cleanliness- There was no doubt that this hotel is clean. There's always someone somewhere cleaning something! I actually witnessed from my room a worker in his uniform, in the pool scrubbing the tiles. I was really impressed. It may not seen like a big deal but it just goes to show you how hard the staff members work. My room was always clean. They even wrapped my cords for me and did it better than I do! : )

The three things I absolutely love about this hotel is that it's adult only(couples only), all ages (20-70+) and all shapes and sizes. No one ever had anything to worry about because no one was trying to hit on my husband and vice versa. This hotel caters mainly to the mature crowd. We're a couple in our mid 30's early 40's. We absolutely enjoyed ourselves and seeing all of the older couples enjoying themselves as well. It was really nice and I hope when I get older I'll be just like them. No one has to worry about how they look in a bathing suit. No one judges anyone. Tall, short, fat, skinny, you name it Sun Palace has it and it didn't matter one bit!! Everyone was just having a great time!!

Oh and one other thing....if you have questions, don't hesitate to email Senor Winkler. He will get you to the right people. Within a few days of my traveling, my questions and reservations were taken care of. Thank you Senor Winkler!

I wish my stay could have been longer but that was the only time we could get away. We are already planning on going back next year and this time it will be for a full week! :)

No apologies accepted! What's there to apologize for? Not only are you an interesting and fun writer but you spell your points out with no shame. As should be.

Through a long and dubious career in the hotel industry I've learned there are many shades of "pickyness" if you will. Well, neither you nor I will change people. They are who they are.
I truly believe that the degree of insatisfaction which some people carry with them (none Sun Palace guests, of course) is in-directly proportionate to the beauty they get from life.

Just keep being yourself. Both you and your husband are beautiful people. Comparisons are worthless here.

Thank you for visitng and hope to have you with us once again soon.

All our best,
