My husband & I recently stayed at the Occidental Reaort for a relaxing adult vacation. The resort was very modern & clean. Staff was very friendly & multilingual. Helping us along the way with brushing up with our Spanish! The food was good. Nice choice- 3 buffets, 2 sit down restaurants, snack bar & 4 bars- 3 of which are poolside. Alberto Martinez & Eusebio Itza are terrific bartenders- always fun & quick with a drink!

I visited this then tired hotel in 2015 and can't believe it is the same hotel. The location on the hotelzone is first class, close enough to go into downtown but far enough for relaxing.
Food was not anything to write about in 2015, now it is vastly improved. Buffet and a la carte options sampled no complaints. Loved Mexico Lindo and the staff, charming. Claraboya seafood too.
Rooms always go for seaview. Only niggle is wifi at a cost.
Staff are obviously so much happier with this renovated hotel and it shows.
Had to laugh at the new way of reserving sunbeds. T-shirts how amusing.

There are two things that make this hotel impressive- the setting and the service. The pictures do not lie. The beach is beautiful and most of public areas share the view and a refreshing breeze off the ocean. It's immaculately clean and well maintained. But what really impressed my husband and me was the service. Everyone we met was professional, competent and helpful. They seemed to work from pride in themselves and their jobs, not just for tips as we've experienced at times in other resorts. Their hard work and great attitude set Tucancun apart. I know I'll forget some that deserve recognition, but a few that really stood out were Eddie (pool and beach), Gaby and Patricia (Premium Club), and Nancy and Jose (Mirador). A big shout out to the bartender at the Guacamaya Bar who made the best mango margaritas. I'm sorry I can't remember your name. Thank you for the anniversary surprise as well.

We are a Canadian couple in our 50s who stayed March 24-29. We've avoided Cancun in the past because of it's spring break reputation. While we were there, there was a large variety of people staying from multi-generation families to couples to college students. There were some groups- not just college students- who were fairly loud and into partying but nothing too disruptive. It provided some pretty good free entertainment at times.

The beach was beautiful, but as other reviewers have mentioned lacks shade. We solved this problem by heading down in the afternoon when the buildings cast shadows onto the sand but the ocean is still bright and sunny. The red flags were up the whole time we were there, but there was little stretch directly in front of the life guard which was shallow quite a ways out where you could play in the waves. The lifeguards were great about directing people to this area and their vigilance made us feel quite safe. Not a great beach for swimming or snorkeling, but perfect for playing in the waves- soft sand, no rocks and very little seaweed. Access to the beach is closed at night.

Pools were nice and we could always find a lounger when we wanted one.

Food was well prepared and there was always something good to eat. We loved all the fresh fruit and surprisingly the coleslaw made with the sweetest cabbage imaginable. All the buffets have a fresh cooked option.

We stayed in a Premium level ocean view room which seemed small when we first walked in, probably because the only natural light comes from the balcony. It's really quite roomy though and the balcony had a small padded bench that was perfect for lounging on listening to the waves. The corner ocean view suites have a wrap around deck, more room inside but no bench. There's plenty of hangers and closet space, but the dresser drawers sometimes stuck. Great shower. Good variety of English stations.

Premium level gives you access to a special lounge with snacks, drinks and an espresso pod coffee maker. There's also a serve yourself premium liquor bar, bottles of wine and beer in the cooler. We enjoyed taking a bottle of wine to the balcony on our first night to sip listening to the waves. You can use the computers in here for your boarding passes although they aren't directly linked to the printer. Just ask and they'll tell you how.

Not much on site to do in the evenings between sunset and nine when the shows start. There's the lobby bar which is quite small with several TVs showing sports and live music most nights. The games room consists of a coin operated pool table and is at the back of the building away from the bars and view. We generally sat outside with a couple of drinks and enjoyed ourselves. If you wanted more activity, there were organized trips to different clubs off-site each night.

Short walk to and easy to use local bus up and down the avenue- 10.5 pesos a ride. Taxi to airport was 400 pesos and took about twenty minutes.

Overall, we were really impressed and wished we could've stayed longer.

Room Tip: Higher floors and ocean views offer quietest, most relaxing experience

Well after a very cool start and 3 room changes in 5 days!!! Because we arrived in the middle of Spring Break and coming from the UK we had honestly never heard of spring break! It was total chaos in the first few days and I felt like I was in a nightmare of 18/22's holiday of loud drinking fuelled under age drinkers which would accept any drink and appalling food, and the bar staff continued to serve although without a doubt was completely wasted and the heat did not help them in continuing to drink and get more drunk day/night! The more louder they became it was like a shouting competition most of time anywhere in the hotel even the quiet pool was invaded with them because of the swim up bar!! BUT and this is a HUGE BUT the Hotel Totally stepped up and turned our holiday around for the last 6 days of our stay! Paulina from reception made it priority to make our stay perfect starting with a fantastic room change to floor 7 to ensure peace and this room was perfect with amazing views!!! And Alberto/manager was 10/10 daily with chef (Jorge) ensuring our food was 5*** every lunch and evening! Not forgetting to mention Luis and Ernesto who stepped in when Alberto was on days off! And we do not want to forget Obdulia she was just fantastic in the Claraboya restaurant and went above and beyond to make things and the food service perfect! And a quick shout out to Alexander (Lobby Bar) Marcos (Adult Swim Bar) Jorge (Poolside Drinks) Felix (Theatre Bar) and the breakfast guys in Claraboya so great and happy every morning and way too many more to remember but all fab!! And last but not least to Juan Carlos the Hotel Manager who gave us first class priority and gave us a holiday to remember all the way From the UK thank you all and as promised my very first ever review but well worthy of it keep up the good work Occidental Tucancun PS just want to lastly say we left everything in our room and after reading reports of theft I would very much like to say nothing was Ever tampered with or touched in our
Room the cleaner was so sweet and thorough Floor 7 Room 7040 please pass on our gratitude she did a great job everyday of our stay!! Many Many thanks Michelle and Nigel from the UK
