“Great Vacation”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

I would like to first off say Thank You! to all the staff at Moon Palace.
-Rosaura Yanez the PR Manager was extremely friendly and helpful throughout our stay.
Claudia and Gerardo the Concierge in BLDG 86 are the the best at what they do. They made the stay so easy and carefree. There is nothing those two can't handle.

The Suite was exceptional. Bigger then what the two of us needed, but I love being by the water and those are the rooms to reserve. Air Conditioning made some noise at night but the maintenance man took care of it ASAP. Thanks to him my wife was able to get her beauty sleep!

The food the food the food. I can taste it right now. EXCEPTIONAL!!

I am fortunate enough that we were taken here by our company for an internal conference. It's really not my kind of vacation, but it is a very nice place. It seems that everyone I talked to had a jacuzzi in their room, food was good for all inclusive, people and service was friendly, well equipped gym. Ohh, and it's massive.

We stayed in Nizuc (Tucan Terrace area) and directly across from the Grand. If you are not looking for noise and partying, this is the area to be, and most rooms in this area have beautiful garden and ocean views. The staff, hospitality and restaurant food in the resort is very good. The rooms are very comfortable with the exception of the hot tub that sits in the middle of the room. Rooms have a patio, shower, hot tub, stocked mini fridge, free bar, iron and ironing board, hair dryer and flat iron. The grounds are well manicured and are kept spotless. The beach has good sand and has cabanas, beach umbrellas and thatched grass covered shade umbrellas, but no palm trees. The pools are clean and warm. Lots of bars and swim-up bars. We tipped 20 pesos for most things, including maid service, but this is not required. However, extra attention might be attained if you tip as you receive the service. So tip small, but often. The ocean is not very good for swimming, but the pools make up for it. The Grand pool was adjacent to our location and was quiet and wonderful. Both the SPA and golf clubhouse are one complex and if you return from here, you can get off in front of the Grand, which is right beside the Tucan Terrace. The golf course has 27 holes and you play two nines (two of either the 'Lakes', 'Dunes' or 'Jungle' courses). Wonderful golf. Buildings and rooms to try to stay: Tortuga rooms 8210 or 8221. Pez rooms 8000, 8010, 8021. Tucan rooms 8300, 8310, 8321. Quetzel rooms 8100, 8110, 8121. And most rooms in Pericos. Ice machines are on the second floors and near the centre portion of each building. Note that weddings take place directly in front of the ocean front buildings such as 'Venado'. Two warnings: (1) If you book in the 'Sunrise' section, expect more noise, and (2) the "Welcome Package" that they want to give you offers resort information, but also includes an attempt to sell you a membership. The information is good, but be prepared to say 'No' to the latter.

Room Tip: Buildings in Nizuc, near the Grand, are the best for peace, quiet, good views and overall comfort...

Moon Palace Resort, Riviera Maya, Mexico April 17-April 24, 2014

We have a lot of positives and just a few not so positive comments about our stay at Moon Palace. We were there with 5 other couples from Northern Maine. The not so positive first: The beach overall is very good with ample lounge chairs and shading. However, the ocean and ocean front part of the beach were disappointing. The ocean is swirling with pieces of seaweed and not far into the ocean you step on seaweed beds. Beach front is covered with seaweed and some trash washes up as well. So if you are looking to spend a lot of time in the ocean, you’ll be disappointed. The rest of the facilities are all very clean and very well maintained.

Secondly, the nightly entertainment was mediocre, so it does not rank high compared to other resorts we have been to. They have 2 outdoor theaters (Sunrise and Nizuc) and we expected more from a large resort. Best outdoor performances were the 3 male tenors from Spain, then some break dancers. They have two nightclubs, which open at 10PM, for late nighters, which our group was not.

Now about the resort: Moon Place is divided into three sections, all abutting each other, Sunrise, Nizuc, and Moon Grand. Nizuc is the oldest, but has been getting very nice upgrades. Sunrise was built next and has also received upgrades. Moon Grand is the newest and more upscale. They are planning another 1,500 rooms there, bringing the total to 4,000 rooms, once completed. You can eat at restaurants on any of these sections. We ate at their finer restaurants in the evening. Momo Asian restaurant at Sunrise required us to be there at 5:30PM to make sure we got seating for all 12 of us in our party and get them to cook in front of us on a large flat grill. Cook was very entertaining and the food and service were excellent, but we have to say they all restaurants were. The Barracuda (Sunrise) had very good steak and seafood. Two restaurants are located at the golf course and require reservations. Sorry guys, you need to wear long pants for those two. You also have to reserve early as we were 4 and 5 days out when we reserved. We also ate at the Caribina at Moon Grand, which had Caribbean food. Also on Moon Grand, we had a private dinner at Los Tacos that came with our concierge service. Just needed to pay 16% sales tax. If you get the $1,500 credit per couple, $300 can be used for the spa, there is unlimited golf (you need to pay $50 for club rentals, but carts are included), and you can upgrade wine. If you use credits, you also need to pay 16% sales tax. Wine selection was varied, but on occasion we did upgrade when a restaurant did not have what we were looking for. We also took advantage of a one hour wine tasting event at the Caribina, which we were able to use on our credits. 3 white wines and 3 reds, with different appetizer between each wine serving. Host also gave us background on each wine and what food to serve with. Very worthwhile for wine lovers or those who want to learn more about wines. We ate breakfast at El Manglar (Nizuc), which had a large buffet of both American and Mexican food. Their omelets were super. Lunch was usually by the pool bar, which had pizza, hot dogs, burgers, chicken wings, fajitas, quesadillas, and French fries. All very good and they had outdoor seating.

Pools were spacious and not over-crowded, even though the facility was close to full capacity. We were there 8 years ago and since then, we can see that the resort caters more to families. If you want to bring your family, they have Kids Space for the younger kids with a number of activities, including movies and a playground. They also have a Teen Lounge with video games, a pool table, food and beverage. They also have a few waterslides and 2 kiddie pools. There were a number of weddings there as well.

Very comfortable and very clean rooms- ours had recently been re-modelled with large standup shower, whirlpool tub, mini-bar, and big flat screen TV with some of the more popular US networks, but half of the stations were in Spanish. Each room has a balcony and fortunately for us, we had great ocean view.

The resort has Wi-Fi available, not just in your room, but on the entire facility, so a lot of people were using their iPhones and iPads around the beach and pool areas.

The ride from the airport is only about 15-20 minutes with no other stops. Sweet!

Bars were all very good with excellent service and drinks, with all top brands available. For our group, Sapphire gin, Bailey's Irish Cream, and Absolut Vodka were popular. The only beer available was Dos Equis, which was quite good. Servers were very good about bringing drinks to you and picking up empties at the pool area and the beach.

The Spa, located at the golf course, offered a large number of different services which were all very worthwhile experiences. All the people in our group were very satisfied, including myself.

While you are not required to tip, we found the service so good in so many areas that we felt we should in those cases. So bring 1’s, 5’s and10’s as change for US there was hard to come by. They try to have you convert to pesos at the money exchange desk. Thye gave 12 pesos to one US Dollar, while we were there.

In summary, this is a very, very nice resort with a lot of excellent amenities and services. We are rating this a "4.5" only because of the issues with the ocean, ocean front, and the entertainment. The weather was outstanding, mid-80’s during the day, low 70’s at night. Olla!

We went with some of our extended family to Cancun, and stayed at the Moon Palace.
The place is gorgeous and perfect for a family vacation - pools were immaculate and the grounds are meticulously kept.

Some of those traveling with us have severe food allergies, one has celiac (severe gluten intolerance) and another with a shell fish allergy. To be completely candid, we didn't really know what to expect, but were completely delighted by the way the staff and the restaurants handled things.

While not the fanciest restaurant at the resort, the Bugabilia restaurant was by far our favorite. It was casual (perfect for a family with kids) and our waiters and maitre d were incredibly responsive and attentive regarding the food allergy concerns.

The restaurant, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is buffet style offers a nice selection, but when dealing with severe allergies you need to be very careful about cross contamination and "hidden" ingredients.

We mentioned the celiac condition and the shell fish condition to our waiter, who immediately summoned the maitre d, who then went into the kitchen and brought the head chef to our table.

The head chef then assured us that we would take personal responsibility to ensure that there were no problems, and that everyone was pleased with their food.

That evening, and every other time we dined in that restaurant during our stay, the most creative and delicious, custom gluten free meals were prepared. To be clear, we didn't have to order these in advance, we didn't have to come at some agreed upon time - we showed up and if there was a different waiter on duty that evening, it was a quick conversation that would result in our meeting with the chef (we met several) and the chef asking us to be a little patient as they prepared the special meal right then.

A few minutes later, the appetizers appeared - and they were gorgeous and VERY tasty, a few minutes later, a creative and delicious entree, and even more creative desserts.

For those of you that have Celiac, or have it in your family - I would without hesitation recommend the Moon Palace and in particular Bugabilia's, they did a marvelous job and those in our family that so often have to settle for boiled chicken and rice were treated to delightful, delicious and wonderfully prepared meals that were often better than what was on the main menu !!

They clearly exceeded our expectations !

Julio and Mauricio are the best! They make everyone feel special ever even when swamped with guest. Our group showed up at the swing bar after dinner and they immediately took our order and were on it whenever our drinks for low. Fun, engaging and personable are the great ways to describe these two gentleman.
