“First time in Mexico, was awesome”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

Our first trip to Mexico, and after much research we chose the Riu Palace Peninsula. The property and rooms are fabulous!! So clean, and attentive. We spent our first night in the villas, which was very nice due to the usage of the adult only pool, lounge chairs and bali beds. Moved day 2-5 to a OV Jacuzzi room (808). This upped the vacation immensely. The suite, room and view were unbelievable.

Food, was fine. Nothing to rave about but no complaints what so ever!! Room service was a bit lacking on the options, but again after a day of sun, sand and heat you tend not to be very hungry.

Only downside, pools close at 7pm, and not tons to do unless you take an night cruise or watch the scheduled entertainment. Would have liked just a little more entertainment areas for night.
Love the place and will be back!!

Room Tip: Room 808 is a beautiful view, and the OV jacuzzi rooms are the ones with the jacuzzi and glass walls...

I have just returned from a 2 week stay at this hotel and wanted to leave some honest feedback. We were moved here by Thomson and were originally meant to stay at the Las Americas and we are so pleased we got the opportunity to change hotel.

I'll start with the food. There are some negative comments below but honestly there is something for everyone. At breakfast there is the option of either the full buffet or continental - we always went for the full buffet and we were spoilt for choice. At lunch there is the option of the buffet and the beach BBQ. Both are very good and again we had no issues (I'm quite a fussy eater). At dinner we ate in the buffet restaurant most nights (Thursday is lobster night and cannot be missed!). We also ate at the steakhouse, the Italian, the Japanese and the Kulinarium (adults only restaurant). We had no issues at all with the booking system and never had a problem booking the restaurant we wanted on the day we wanted. They never appeared to be fully booked and we never saw a queue at 8am. We also did the romantic dinner at the beach (extra cost) which was so worth it. Our favourite was the Kulinarium - the steak there was excellent.

The entertainment - we are a couple in our twenties and the animation team kept us entertained all day. They were all great - especially Carlos, Juan and Miguel (Shirley Temple) they work very hard all day to keep everyone entertained. The animation team put on a couple of shows a week which are fairly amusing and every night they take anyone who is interested to the night clubs too (we visited four clubs in our visit - Coco Bongo cannot be missed!).

The rooms are a large size and our one was at the front of the hotel on the 11th floor (I'd say perfect location - brilliant sea view and with a hydrobath). The whole hotel is kept spotlessly clean at all times and the service is fantastic. I don't know if hotel management read these reviews but I also wanted to say how great Adrian the bartender around the pool is - a small tip goes a long way - we never had an empty cup. And I also wanted to mention Marlene who works the breakfast and lunch shift in the buffet.

Overall - one of the best hotels we have stayed in. Fantastic service, great fun, good food. We are already looking to book for next year!

Room Tip: The higher up the room the better

Very nice hotel lovely stay!

Food, meals are fantastic! The food selection is on top form somthing for everyone, loved it all! The service recived from the seatting staff and resturant staff is also brilliant not a fault at all about the food within the hotel. MEGA A+

Rooms: Are nice clean spacious with great facilites and a daily filled mini bar. The rooms are cleanned daily by the maids and a great job done everytime. Only one fault with our room was that the big massage shower head was broken and was not fixed by any staff memeber. Jauquzzi bath was great thing to have in our room and we enjoyed using this.

Staff: The service staff are very accomodating, happy and extreamly attententive. The pool staff are superb! constantly running around to accomadate you with bevrages all day (tip them they work so hard). All staff are always saying hello and making sure that everything is ok for you and give you such a welcoming vibe. I would say the SPA STAFF on the other hand let the team down and are rude! everytime I went in to use the facilites the girls at the desk where really rude to me and spoke to each other in spanish what I couldnt understand and made me feel very unwelcome everytime I went in. I also had my nails done at the spa and they started doing the wrong thing after me explaing to them all three times on different occassions about what I wanted and getting a price from them for this, I mentioned to them that this was wrong and the price doesnt add up or match even remotly what I was told by the other memeber off staff, I was then made to pay 20USD more and left the spa afterwards feeling unwelcome and stupid. On the other hand everyone else within the hotel is FANTASTIC!!!

Entertainment team (animation group): A lovely warm bunch of people very talented, The pool proggrame can be a tad annoying at the pool everyday as these are repeated everyday using the same songs and introduction lines so did start to get on myself and my partners nervse, But others love this. The photographers at the hotel will go around the pool everyday trying to get your pictures, this was great at the start but after two weeks started to also get a tad nippy as we were trying to relax. Pictures are great qulity though! so get a few :)

The beach: A delightful stone throw away and is so pacefull and relaxing! Highly reccomend to people that dont like too much pool noise and run-arounds also the hammocks are close by and a great way to chill out. You can also take part in water sports and enjoy paragliding.

Overall this hotel is a brilliant stay! great value for money, Great Staff, Great location!

Stayed the last week of June with a group of 10. Had an amazing time. We have stayed in 4 other RIU's (Cabo and Nuevo Vallarta) - there is no comparison...this is by far the nicest resort. We also took a drive to Playa de Carmen to check out the RIU Palace Mexico...although a decent resort...again, the Peninsula is at another level - from the service, to the food, to the room, etc... The one advantage I'll give to RIU Palace Mexico is their beach is significantly nicer.

Ideally...the Peninsula resort would be in Playa DC - the town is so much more attractive and authentic than Cancun - Cancun downtown is really beat up - I was last there 10 years ago, and it has really gone downhill - everyone hassling you to buy something from them, buildings in terrible shape...tons of closed up retail shops, etc...

The food at the Peninsula was great and we never got tired of it - we prefer the buffet to the restaurants - although the steak and lobster at the steakhouse were real yummy - and don't be shy...ask for two or three lobsters - it's amazing what a small tip can bring you. We loved the lunch they serve every other day at the pool - paella, steak and shrimp fajitas, bbq ribs and corn

Other than the drive to PDC, we took the ferry (100 yards from the hotel) to Isla Mujeres - $19 for a round trip and only 20 minute cruise - well worth the trip - rented a golf cart ($50) and cruised around the island for about 4 hours - ended on a great beach on the north side of the island and had a great lunch at Chimbo's - great seafood right on the beach. You don't need to do a tour on the island - waste of money. Just cruise around on your own, and take some awesome photos.

Enjoy your trip, and ignore any negative comments for this property - feel free to message me for any questions

Great resort, great food, awesome experience! Highly recommend the ocean massage! Entertainment team lots of fun- especially Shirley Temple! Food was great- room was upgraded to a larger balcony unit. Great views of the ocean. Only disappointment was water and soda weren't refilled daily- had to call and ask. Steakhouse was a bit dissapointing, but the Mexican restaurant and the nightly buffet more than made up for it! Hope to go back soon!

Arrived 13th June and had our wedding on the 21st with 30 close friends and family with us (love them all for coming).
We were told the hotel was good, but it was much better, Great food, Great restaurants, Great staff, great location, Great room, Great view and for us a Great Wedding and a very special day and wall to wall sunshine to cap it all (Paradise)
The Wedding planner that met with us in the hotel to finalize all the details was brilliant and couldn't do enough, the Wedding was magical and everything we had planned, and some.
The photographer filming the video was very proffesional and the Video is really good, the Mariachi band we booked for after the ceremony is a must and went down with everyone really well (started the party) and well worth the extra exspence, the evening reception was held in the private section in the Steak house which was apsolutely perfect, ideal for speaches and celebrations on your own. Another piece of advise is to ask for the chairs to be dressed up for the ceremony in Ribbon of your choice, it cost $5 a chair but a nice touch and much better looking than just plain white chairs at the ceremony, the Wedding location is quality.
The staff are brill and cant do enough for you and well worth tipping them as they deserve it and look after you that little bit more.
The pools are great and loads of sunbeds for everyone all day ( no fighting for sunbeds here) , we went on the hotel beach which was a bit rocky in places but again loads of sunbeds available and waiter service all day, well worth the odd broken toe !!
It is hard to be negative about this Hotel and everything associated with it but if i had too really struggle to be negative i would say at times the Bars in the evening need more than one staff serving, the Restaurants rush to serve you and then clear up as quick as possible and get you out and the Beach could be cleaned slightly better every night, but i am really reluctant to be negative.
The Spa is great (had 2 massages) and the Gym although a little small was fine and empty at non peak times.
We would deffinetly go back and deffinetly highly reccomend it to anyone, our Wedding was fantastic and all our family & friends loved our special wedding day, the only thing that let us down during the whole holiday was the England Team !!!
cant wait to hit Cancun again, Coco Bongos here we come !!

Room Tip: go higher for a view and ask for upgrade to a bigger room with a double balcony.
