We stayed at Riu Palace from 8/10-8/16. The hotel and grounds are the cleanest I've ever seen. Someone is always washing windows, mopping, cleaning the pools, etc. Check in was very easy. We booked through orbitz. We were a bit confused because the villas sounded so nice, but after booking we realized that not all of the villas have an ocean view. Some of the villas face the back of other villas. After realizing this, I emailed customer service and asked if we could switch to a junior suit in the tower instead. Someone emailed back promptly and said they would try to accommodate us as best they could. I printed this email and took it with me. The staff was no trouble at all when it came to switching rooms. We were put in room 911 which was PERFECT. It was closer to the beach and away from the outside entertainment area so it wasn't too loud at night.

The room: very clean, wifi was great, the bed was a little hard for our taste, and the toilet area didn't have a vent or fan. We loved having a ceiling fan though. House keeping changed our sheets everyday as well as swept and mopped the room everyday.

Room service is very skimpy compared to what we have experienced before. The breakfast menu has yogurt, toast, fruit, boiled eggs..smaller things like that. I was expecting waffles or omelettes. So if you like a light breakfast, you won't mind it. You also have to order it the night before. Other than breakfast, they have a couple sandwiches, a salad, nachos, and cake. That's it.

Food: All of the food was delicious. We loved the buffet but I could see how some people would find it repetitive if they ate there every night. We had no trouble making reservations for the restaurants. We made sure to be at the customer service desk at 8am every morning. You must try the steakhouse! The sports bar food is so/so. They keep hamburgers in the fridge and you have to warm them in the microwave if you want them. The hotdogs and sandwiches were ok. I would stick to restaurant food. We tipped at every meal. Around $3 for breakfast and $5 or more at dinner. By the third day, we had servers grabbing us as soon as we walked in the door to seat us in their section. They already knew our drink orders and the condiments we used regularly were already at our table for us.

Beaches and pools: We spent one day at the swim up bar with no complaints, other than the entertainment crew is constantly on the loud speakers and playing games. I wouldn't lay by the pool if you want to relax. The beach is more quiet, so that is where we spent most of our time. There are always plenty of loungers, although you may have to work for an umbrella. Nonetheless, we never had to do without one. It's the best of both worlds if you want a little entertainment and a little relaxation. The staff also kept the beach very clean. No garbage around and the seaweed was also kept swept up (at a reasonable degree). There are peddlers on the beach but they don't hassle you if you say no.

The only thing we really found annoying was the resort photographers. They are pushy when it came to pictures. Obviously, you have to buy the photos they take. They will ask you 3-4 times even when you say no and I had a lady put a lei on me and take one anyway.

Overall, we had a wonderful experience and would recommend this hotel to friends. It does have a more modern layout, and I think it is tailored to those who want to party, but I had no trouble relaxing there either. The staff is absolutely wonderful and they work so very hard to make sure you are pleased with your stay. Roger, Elvis, and Salvador (all managers, I think, by the way they dressed) and Deysi (our house keeper) are amazing. If you're thinking about going, you won't be disappointed!

Hotel is huge, spotless and will recommend it to everyone! I stayed for 2 weeks at this hotel food and drinks are amazing! so much to chose from.
It is not walking distance to the town but can easily get taxis or the bus only 5 minutes in a car will only cost $12 to the town and $15 to the shopping center.

Entertainment is on every night however where it is the room is far too hot to sit in so we stayed at the bar where Deigo worked. He was the nicest bar man i have ever met and made our holiday, all the staff work so hard over there and are so helpful! Any drink that you needed even if it wasn't on the menu Deigo would make it perfect for us! Was really helpful providing us with all information about cancun itself and making us feel so welcome.

Rooms were spotless and the beds are so comfortable, rooms are cleaned twice a day in the morning and night just after you go out for food, room service was great and a lot to chose from.

Entertainment staff was always busy around the pool getting everyone involved in the games which was good, however there are different pools where you can sunbath at if you just was to relax.

Would go back to the hotel and stay again! Loved it!

Just spent one full week in mid August at this resort and it is better than expected ! The resort is new and very clean from the huge cold beautiful lobby to every room is ocean view mini to full suit.
The food are excellent at buffet and very good at all specialty restaurants. They have lobsters buffet diner on thursday nights. All staff employees are very nice and did a good job all the time.
The pools are crowded except the adult only pool. The beach is so beautiful and clean with crystal clear water. We are definitely looking forward to come back again here in the future ...

Room Tip: Higher floors on the restaurants side or the adult only area.

I've nothing negative to say about this hotel at all. Absolutely perfect. I don't know how anyone can say bad things about this place. Third time to cancun but will definitely be coming back to this hotel if we return. The staff can't do enough for you, not one bad experience in the 2 weeks we were there. Customer service at its best. The hotel was immaculate and all day you see staff cleaning, over and over again. They really do go all out. People saying the beach is a bit small, it may be compared to other hotels but there were always more then enough free sun beds. The food here is the best I've experienced at any 5 star hotel. So much to choose from and all cooked fresh in front of you.

Room Tip: I'm sure all have a good view but from speaking to other guests I wouldn't bother win the VIP to the villa rooms.

A great hotel and an excellent location. The smal beach areas are well maintained and the waiters keep a constant sream of refreshments. We went all inclusive and couldn't fault the drinks and food. Excellent choice of restaurants - the Mexican is good fun - and a very nice menu to try out lots of different tastes. Staff were really helpful and warm. Rooms are a little clinical although we had a double double bed as we had our son with us in a separate single bed and so was very comfortable. Views are great and weather was superb. Probably not quite a 5 star but better than many European 4 stars!
