“I hope to return to The Royal Cancun.”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

My wife and I just got back from spending 3 weeks in Cancun at a different resort each week. We stayed at The Royal Cancun our second week and it was our favorite. 1st week we stayed at the Mayan Palace near Playa del Carmen and it was a very nice place but it was too mega resortish and not very cozy. Our last week we stayed at Casa Maya which is right next door to The Royal Resort. Casa Maya has not been kept up and since I know that The Royal Cancun is right next door I would never stay at Casa Maya again. At The Royal Cancun we were in room B412 which was a ground floor unit with a partial ocean view between the two villas directly in front of ours that were right on the beach. We were on the right side of the resort when looking out at the ocean and it was the quieter side which we loved. We loved our villa because it was ground floor and just steps away from the beach and we could come and go from the patio sliding door to the beach without having to walk around through the resort to go through the front door of our villa. The staff are very polite and the concierge at the time was Denzel and he was great. We did the time share presentation because they gave us discounted excursion tickets to Chichen Itsa and an all inclusive day pass to The Royal Sands. The sales pitch was high pressure and took a long time but it wasn't as bad as it was at the Mayan Palace. The excursion to Chichen Itsa was great and the day pass at Royal Sands started at 11am for drinks and noon for food at their buffet and it ended at 5pm. The Royal Cancun has good free activities also. They have nice tennis courts and we even took out a sail boat after a quick lesson on how to use it. They have free bike rentals too. If/when we go back to Cancun the first thing I will do is see if I can get a room at The Royal Cancun. We had a 2bdrm 1bath unit and I thought it was very nice. It's not brand spanking new (it's one of the first resorts and it's 35 yrs old) but if anyone thinks that it looks old they need to take the silver spoon out of their mouth and get a grip. This place does not look old, if you want to see old walk next door to Casa Maya and Casa Maya is only like 20 yrs old. The Royal Resorts have taken good care of this property. If you're looking for a nice beach, the beaches in this area of the hotel zone are rock free and calm and clear. Their are lots of fish under the dock to see and there are sting rays out in the open so be careful.

Room Tip: The side of the resort where the swim up bar and restaurant are is more quiet and peaceful. Ground...

We only stayed here one night before we went to Playa del Carmen, it really was just ok. The rooms seem quite old, like 80's style. Its slightly away from the main part of Cancun, we needed a transfer to be dropped off, once we were in the main part, I wish we would have stayed there. The beach was amazing.
As two females travelling, we were pretty conscious of safety and paid quite a bit for a transfer to playa del carmen as the hotel staff's english was a bit confusing, turns out we could have taken a taxi for much less..

We spent our 2nd vacation with friends at the Royal Cancun, and it was every bit as good this time as it was before. From Jeremiah greeting us with a "Welcome home!" upon arrival to his "We will see you next year", the stay was fantastic. The resort has a warm, homey feeling that you don't find at other places. I love the fact that there are multiple small buildings, and it is not just a glorified big hotel. The whole place is just charming and cozy.

The bus route runs right in front of the resort, so you can hop on one and be downtown within 15 minutes, and up in the Isla Shopping Center within about 20 minutes. Beware of the drivers though- they are all crazy!! Hold on tight and enjoy the ride!

The villas are spotless (just keep in mind, there is no housekeeper service on Sundays), and the beds are pretty comfortable (a little soft for my taste, but not bad). Bear in mind, some of the beds are Full size, not Queen, so they might be a little 'cozy' for some people. If you prefer to cook in some or all of the days (as we did), you can go to the market in downtown Cancun and bring food back; the kitchen has pretty much anything that you need for cooking. WiFi is free, which was great when we updated our Facebook photo albums every night!

The grounds are so well kept, the pools are crystal clear and the sand on the beach is groomed a few times a week. The staff is just wonderful- very friendly and accomodating. The personal concierge is a nice bonus to help you decide where to go. A hint: Unless you really want to buy a timeshare in the Royal Resorts, decline the "Free 90 minute Orientation Lunch". It was more like a 4 hour intense sales pitch.

The drinks and food are average price for a resort- you have to have at least 1 drink at the swim-up bar! The restaurant was ok- not fantastic, not awful. The seafood pasta buffet was not that great, but breakfast was good. There are other activities at the resort through the week (Zumba, water aerobics, Texas Hold 'em), but they are not well publicized, so you may need to ask about them.

My husband did sailing lessons ($5 for a basic lesson and a total of 1 hour of sailing time) and had a blast. Other recommendations:

-Scuba Diving through Scuba Cancun (across the street from the resort)

-Chichen Itza- splurge for the "Luxe" tour ($90). It is a long drive there (2 1/2 hours), but they feed you a continental breakfast, drinks on the bus (water and beer), snacks, a buffet lunch and a swim in a cenote. If the weather is hot, bring Gatorade!

-Xcaret- another great tour, another full day. Check out the Graveyard, and definitely do the underground river trip. You probably don't want to do both this and Chichen Itza in the same week- they are both very full days.

-Isla Mjueres. You can walk to the ferry (1/4 mile away, if that), then rent a golf cart on the island. There is a turtle sanctuary (with a $3 admission fee), lots of shops and restaurants

We will definitely be back!

My spouse and I stayed at The Royal Cancun the week of October 5 on an exchange of our home resort through Interval International. The resort had just recently been refurbished prior to our arrival. We had a two bedroom, two bath unit with an ocean view. The room was very clean, with comfortable furniture and king size bed in the upstairs bedroom. The grounds are spotless, with beautiful landscaping. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Being that this is a timeshare unit, you get the obligatory visit with your concierge who will try to entice you into a sales presentation tour. We declined the offer and did not have any undue pressure to change our minds. This resort is at the top of the hotel zone, so is not a party resort. The Royal resorts do offer free shuttle service between their properties. We visited the Royal Islander to participate in sea turtle release and to enjoy karaoke night on Sunday and Thursday. The pirate ships and other party boats pass in front of The Royal Cancun nightly. We enjoyed seeing the boats and hearing the music from our deck as we partied along. The resort also has an on premise market with reasonable prices. If you want to go to Walmart or travel downtown, public transportation is easy and convenient, with a bus stop near the resort entrance. We highly recommend this resort if you are looking for a relaxing stay.

Room Tip: If you are traveling with children, go for poolside. Otherwise, ask for ocean view.

We left the husbands home and the three Amigas visited Cancun for the first time. We stayed at the Royal Cancun and had the best time of our lives.
On our arrival, we were greeted like family, and immediately I had a mishap. My new Royal family took complete control, and in no time my very serious problem was solved without an extra grey hair on my head. Thank you Marina, Jerimias, Luis and all the staff for taking care of me.
This resort is beautiful, it's not one of those high rise, same as the hotel next door looking resort. It is right on the beach. Our room overlooked the beach and the ocean, and was immaculate. Thank you Candelorio. The whole resort was immaculate and the beautiful gardens and grounds were impeccable, and the pools were perfect. We ate at the restaurant which is at the edge of the beach many times, where the service is superb. Guilly, Fernando, and Victor made us feel like royalty. There was also plenty of security and we felt safe at all times.

I am rating this resort 5 stars, though I do have one complaint... The wifi. Can't wait to go back!

My sister and I have been coming to 'VCI', now known as Royal Can Cun, for over 30 years. We bought our villa during construction and look forward to our two weeks here. The staff are the best, villa beautiful altho we liked the old decor better, grounds are spectacular, location ideal, easy to get to town or center of Can Cun. We take advantage of the shuttle service offered to us and visit the other Royals. We have formed friendships with others who own at the same time and it is reunion time. Our concierge this year was not the best, but he was the only fly in the ointment. It will not stop us from returning.

The weather was not great but The Royal Cancun was its normal warm and friendly self. We have been coming here annually for the past 7 years and the resort does not change the things that make it great. The landscaping is wonderful, the staff is friendly and the accommodations are timeless.

We had three guests this year and we all loved the resort. Even the little things were done right. When I walked to my car in the rain, a bellman gave me an umbrella. The front desk personnel are very knowledgeable and the resort services - snorkeling equipment, sailboats, tennis and bikes were all well maintained.

I hate the high-rise hotels and this isn't one of them.
This is a great family resort but also a great place for friends and couples alike.

Room Tip: Most rooms have some view of the Caribbean and Isla. Try to avoid rooms with only courtyard views. V...
