Stunning views, outstanding service and incredible food and drinks make this hotel shine among the many others sharing the Cancun coastline. No questions or doubts about returning or referring others to this hotel.
Located just outside the downtown district, the hotel is located approx 20 minutes from the airport, 5 minute bus-ride to shopping and 20mins to downtown Cancun. The decor is very chic and since they have recently switched ownership, they continue to make changes.
It's a boutique hotel with 8 floors and houses about 250 which provides for a more personable and attentive feel. While smaller than many surrounding hotels, the hotel makes great use of its space with 3 overlapping heated infinity pools, spa, tennis courts and state of the art gym. The stretch of beach is prime real estate where you can dry off on a beach chair or sprawl out on a Cabana bed. As the name suggests, it is a "luxury experience" resort and intended for adults/couples, but the grounds also have a play/day care area designated for kids. The grounds and rooms were always clean and well-maintained.
The rooms are spacious offering king size beds or 2 doubles along with a standard desk, flat screen tv, and stand alone bath and shower. It also comes with a complementary safe to secure your valuables. The view from the balcony can be stunning allowing you to see both the lagoon and ocean. There is really only one strip of balconies that limit you to having only a partial view of the ocean.
The hotel has 3 restaurants - "Seasons" which has a set menu, Asian "Gaijin", and "Zango" which hosts the breakfast buffet and a different theme every evening for dinner (Mexican, Italian, Caribbean, Lobster etc.). Aside from the breakfast which is buffet, all of the items are from a menu including the snack bar outside overlooking the ocean. The food is amazing. Menus were diverse and well though out. Three course meals (starter, main and dessert) is customary and at times resemble pieces of art. They will often showcase a special drink and little taster even before the bread comes out. Little touches like the flavoured butter and variety of breads to squid ink risotto make the tastes and experiences stand out above and beyond other all-inclusive resorts - I would go as far as even saying local fine-dining restaurants. For those fearful of trying something new, they carry traditional menu items as well. Be sure to reserve a night at the asian cuisine which has a talented and quick handed chef provides some entertainment while preparing your food.
The hotel carries premium bar rail and served until 2 am at Bar 21. Bartenders are friendly and capable of making whatever drinks you want and however you want it. When I asked for a vodka cranberry at Bar 21 they asked "is Grey Goose okay?"...yes, yes it is.
Excellent. Whether this is because the hotel was well below capacity or just the way they treat all visitors (which I think is the latter), the staff cater to your every need from proactively laying out your towels to bringing you food and drinks to where you are seated at the beach. Routine rounds are made by the pool and beach to ensure your either full, hydrated or both.
Very good and hosts a variety of treatments, massages, a mix between the two and for how long.
Entertainment is slightly lacking as you are limited to spending your time in Bar 21 for the evening. This is subject to change however as they plan on converting the 8th floor penthouse (where they hosted the Moet Champagne Party for all guests) into a nightclub/lounge which will be something special in light of the panoramic view of the Ocean.
Access for buses to where there is action run along the main street which is a short walk from the hotel and costs about $1 USD or equivalent. A high-end plaza called Kukulcan (designer labels eg. Vuitton, Gucci etc.) is only a couple minutes away, as is an outdoor mall called La Isla shopping village which allows you to walk around and tour the many local (souvenirs etc.) and commercial retail stores (Quiksilver, Puma to Lacoste, Zara and Hilfiger). The nightlife strip is about 20 mins by bus.
While I'm limited to my room and the common areas, some people may have some minor cosmetic or preference-based opinions on the following:
Entertainment as I said will need some improvement but they are working to address this. The proximity to downtown and other sites along the way makes for a reasonable alternative.
The lighting in the rooms produce soft and slightly dim lighting and may not be bright enough for some. They offer several lights throughout the room which helps though.
The pillows are fairly thin and you may have to figure out whether one or doubling up is more comfortable for you. This wasn't a big deal for me.
The Sandos is a beautiful hotel which offers the stretch of beach your are looking for and the service and amenities one would expect from a 5-star luxury resort.
The staff is attentive and courteous, service is excellent and the food is incredible. These are sentiments that were equally agreed and appreciated by all of those who I spoke to throughout the week and I am hopeful that this standard is maintained as they continue to make this hotel their own. I'm confident they will but will have to return just to make sure.
