“An old hotel in need of updating”
Reviewed 7 July 2013

After four days in Playa Del Carmen we decided to spend a few days in Cancun. After driving up and down the strip a few times we stopped at the Calypso. The price was $60 USD per night (breakfast not included) so we decided to check in.

The reception staff were friendly and helpful and the room was clean although very dated with the noisiest and most outdated air conditioning unit I've ever seen.

There are two pools to the rear with sun beds around. This area was almost always deserted whilst we were there, as was the hotel.

To the front is a store and an Internet cafe which charges $10 per hour. Wifi is free in the lobby, but if there are a few people connected it's fairly slow. The trick is to take your device and place it on the reception counter so that you get a strong signal, then it works fine.

If you are Happy with a budget hotel on the lagoon side and in easy reach of central Cancun's clubs, shopping malls etc then Calypso is fine. However, if modern fixtures and fittings, or being on the lovely main beach are important then choose somewhere else.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before you check in and request one with a modern aircon unit.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights as part of a tour. Our rooms were nice enough, clean and spacious. Had big windows and a kind of balcony (but our room overlooked the carpark). There is a nice pool and outdoor area (although we didn't use it). There is free wifi downstairs in the reception area.

The hotel is located between the town area and the beach area, but not close enough to either to walk. However, there are frequent busses in both directions. It is also across the road from the ferry terminal to Isla Mujeres if you choose to do one of the 'booze cruise' type tours. Or the public ferry terminal is further into the beach direction.

Would recommend steering clear of the hotel restaurant, however. For a group of 12 our meals were spread across over an hour, arriving in ones and twos, one person's being forgotten entirely, she chose to go hungry rather than wait for it to come. Service in the restaurant as well as in the hotel was pretty much non-existent. But other than that it was an adequate stay! (But I much preferred our stay subsequent to this right on the beach).

In my opinion this was not worth a stay.....

Good:
- cheap
- AC in working order
- right in front of ferry terminal for isla mujeres - but if you have time go to puerta juarez one - you can save 5 bucks on the ticket

Bad
- dated and slightly dirty rooms - agree with one comment on mattresses - with plastic covers and you can hear the plastic cracking when you move on it
- really loud - i could not sleep since it is right by busy road
- bad location - no in zona hotelera really at all - you have to take a bus or walk for about an hour
- internet only in the lobby
- indifferent staff

Generally my main issue was the quality of sleep and for this price you can get a nicer hotel either in the city or on isla mujeres - and if not nicer than better located so that cars don't wake you up at night

All of the airport taxis will no where this hotel is! So it is easy to find. It is NOT on the beach side.

When we got to Calypso, it was night time and we just wanted to put our stuff down and get some rest. Our check in process was easy because we booked online (through Booking.com).
The room was dark, and a bit sketchy. Everything was clean, but barely. The elevator is super old and scary.
The next day we went to see if we could extend our stay by one night (we only booked one night). The girl at the front desk said the rates went from $60 USD to $90 overnight. We looked online and the price was still the same. We decided to try out another hotel in the area for the same price. The girl was rude and had no desire to satisfy her customer. We only had about 30 minutes to gather our things and find a new room, we were told if we weren't gone we would pay fhte $90 for another night!!!!
Needless to say, we left of a bad note and will never return.

For this dark, dingy room and horrible customer service we will take our dollar elsewhere.

Hotel Sotavento is RIGHT BEHIND this hotel and has much better rooms and service!!! Also, they have breakfast and a nicer pool! (Sotavento is literally right behind this hotel, walk down the alley way to the back of the hotel and you will find it!).

Room Tip: Say yourself the headache and DO NOT book here, go right behind the hotel to Sotavento! tell your Ta...

We stayed here for the final two nights of a tour through Mexico.

The beach and restaurants are both a bus ride away so the location is not ideal.

The hotel desperately needs refurbishment or at the very least some maintenance. The sheets and towels were so old and overused that they were threadbare. The hot water in the shower was hit-and-miss.

The mattresses are covered in plastic mattress protectors and because the sheets are so threadbare it felt like I was sleeping on plastic. I ended up trying to sleep on top of one of the towels so that the plastic didn't make me sweat... I just ended up itchy from the towel.

The air conditioner was so loud that I had to sleep with headphones in and music playing (I could hear it even above my ear plugs). It was the middle of summer so I couldn't turn the air conditioner off and there were too many mosquito's about to leave the balcony door open.

We ate at the restaurant once. It was possibly the most tasteless food I've eaten in Mexico. The service was just average.

I'd like to be able to say something positive but unfortunately nothing comes to mind.

Part of our Gecko's tour. A three star hotel done well. Pretty much everything was just right. Not a destination in its own right but a convenient and comfortable place to stay with easy regular bus access (R1, 8.5 pesos) to downtown Cancun (4km) or the malls along the strip and a hop across the road to the ferry to Isla de las Mujeres. Our air conditioner broke down and within half an hour they had moved us to a new room with a brand new air conditioner. Staff friendly, efficient and with a good sense of humour. Washing was fast and cheap. Restaurant was fine for a late evening supper and a Mexican or international style breakfast. Internet free and functional but only available downstairs in the lobby, which is not air-conditioned. Hotel has a convenience store out the front and there is an Oxxo five minutes walk away.

Hotel was average (depending on the point of view, border to below or above).
It's conveniently located, meaning not by the beach, but close enough, not close to town, but easily accessible by bus or taxi. (Bus= 8.50pesos/US 0.80)
Just across the road, there is the "Embarcadero", which is the ferry to Isla Mujeres (a must go island/beach/place).
The pools are old, and small, but you can enjoy a nice "splash" considering Cancun is generally very hot.
The rooms are clean, the decor reminds of Miami/80's but the mattresses are brand new (we even saw some rooms having a new decor/mattress arriving).
The restaurant is very limited, but the food is ok. If you are in a budget, the convenience store is by the hotel.
The staff was "OK", helpful but not extraordinary.
With the exception of a guy called Francisco, who seemed to be a "handyman/security/doorbell/delivery/etc", he was exceptionally polite and helpful.
We would stay there again if the rates are "ok" and are in a budget.
