This is our 8th year at this hotel and it couldn't have been better. The staff at this hotel is the best. They remember your name from year to year. Abundio, the best bartender in the world is still there and as he sees you come around the corner towards the bar your drink is already waiting for you. The new refurbished Krystal is beautiful the wait staff there is also great, Regio and Tomas are exceptional. This hotel is one one of the cleanest we have seen. We intend to
go again next year. There is nothing bad to say about this resort.

This was our second trip to Cancun and third Riu resort overall. The Riu Palace Las Americas was the best by far. Best food at an all inclusive yet, each restaurant was excellent. Buffet was average, but the Palace also has room service unlike most others and by staying at a Riu Palace, you can go right next door to the Riu Cancun and enjoy all they offer as well. Amazing pool and beach. Just the right amount of fun and activities but not as crazy as it might get elsewhere. Excellent central location. Quick and safe bus ride to the club area or the ferry over to Isla Mujeres (highly recommended!).

We have stayed next door at the Riu Cancun a few times and enjoyed it, so we decided to see if spending a few extra dollars at the Riu Palace would be worth it. The Palace property is beautiful. The room was nice, although there was a major thunder storm one night, and the water did come through the sliding glass door and leave a puddle in the room. After that storm, one of the elevators was out of commission for the rest of the week, which made getting up and down to the 7th floor a bit time consuming (there are only 2 elevators). The staff throughout the hotel were very warm and accomodating. The pool and entertainment staff (great job Jack) keep things fun all day long. Bartenders and waiters were excellent. I certainly didn't go very long without a drink in my hand if I wanted one. The food is ok. It's an all-inclusive, so I don't really expect 5 star dining, but it was fine. The buffet certainly has a large enough selection to please everyone. We also made reservations at the steakhouse which turned out a very nice surf n turf. The pool area consists of a LOT of trees and shade. We like to hang out in the sun all day. There is really only one area where the sun will shine most of the day around the two pool bars, and that becomes one of the problems we encountered....chairs. There is not many in that area because it's just not very big. I would go out at 7:00am and a lot of people would already have towels out on a chair. The problem is they didn't show up until noon, but their towels were there, and the chairs were taken. It would be nice if the hotel could prevent that somehow, but I guess that would be difficult. The question becomes, is it worth it? It all depends. The rooms are nicer at the Palace then they are next door for sure, but the food and service are comparable. If you can live with a bit of a dated room, you may want to save the money, but I really can't knock the Palace. We did have a good time and enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Ocean view is the way to go. We had a room on the 7th floor above the main pool. Beautiful!

Let me start off by saying we have stayed at the Riu Palace a couple of years ago and were very impressed. This trip was just my wife and I getting away for five nights. We wanted something nice, but not completely over the top. Based on our previous visit we figured the RPLA would fit the bill perfectly. We were disappointed.

The RPLA is still an architecturally beautiful building and almost all of the staff are very helpful, but overall the hotel has fallen at least a notch or two. I personally attribute this to Riu investing heavily in building the new Peninsula resort and totally remodeling the Riu Caribe. I think these two projects pulled resources from the RPLA and it shows. While beautiful, the hotel itself is showing some age; large areas of paint chipped away on the outside, tears in the fabric on the lobby furniture and room furniture that has seen maybe a few too many years of service.

The real down fall we saw this year was in the food. The breakfast and lunch buffets were almost exactly the same every day. In addition to being the same, most of the food was horrible. I can generally find a few things at any buffet that I like, but at these buffets (especially the lunch) there really wasn't much even edible. I actually found myself feeling guilty when the waiters would carry off a plate with a bunch of food left on it because I couldn't eat it.

That takes us to the Ala Carte restaurants - very disappointing to say the least. The RPLA has gone to two seating's nightly 6:30 and 8:45. Every table is served the same exact appetizer tray, you are given the choice between 3 or 4 precooked (hours before) entrees which are bland and taste like they have been sitting in a warming tray for hours. To finish the meal, you can choose from 2 desserts (my choice at the fusion place was "warm apple pie and ice cream - the ice cream was half melted and the apple pie was still frozen in the middle).

I attribute the horrible drop in food quality to personnel. I know for a fact that one of the head bartenders was shifted to the Peninsula resort, and I can only assume that some of the chefs and other food people were shifted as well. Bottom line is what was a nice dining experience two years ago has turned into a disaster.

Will we go back to the RPLA? Probably not. While not the most expensive place to stay in Cancun, for what we paid I would have expected better food and food choices.

Room Tip: Go ahead and pay a little extra for the Ocean view. The rooms on the outside of the "U" l...

This hotel is such a beautiful building with a stunning lobby area. The room we were given had two large double beds and had a bath and shower, tv, mini bar fridge etc. The pool area is relaxed with plenty of sun beds and staff who are more than happy to bring your drinks to you. On the whole I would recommend it to friends-although not to the ones who are used to the best as there have been too many small things that have spoilt our stay a little.

GOOD POINTS

The hotel is very very clean in all areas, including our room. Towels were changed every day in the bathroom and those lovely little toiletries replenished. Our beds were re made and turned down of an evening and a nice touch was that every day the beds were made up differently. There was extra bedding available and there was ample storage for clothes and even the illusive space to put your cases out of sight which is missing in some hotels(I do like to be tidy).
The mini bar is not mini by any standards holding four litre bottles of spirits on optics. There was a fridge with pop beer and water and a coffee machine.
The pool area was clean and tidy with ample sun beds and leads to a pleasant little beach with loads of fish pelicans and dolphins to entertain you. There is a lifeguard on duty from early morning until sunset and every so often a large barbecue takes place outside.
The food and service in the main buffet restaurant is exceptionally good. There is a massive choice for all meals and it is all fresh and tasty. There are a number of restaurants which are themed too along with room service.

BAD POINTS

Although there was plenty of square footage in the beds- we had asked for a king size bed- kind of expected as we also told them we were here over our wedding anniversary.
The mini bar and fridge were supposed to be stocked daily but I got fed up of having to call reception when the Pepsi ran out as this clearly was not being done. In a fortnight we had ONE pouch of coffee for the machine and the only reason I did not ask for more was that it was awful, which was weird considering that the coffee in any other part of the hotel was excellent. We went to two of the themed restaurants, one was an Italian, my favourite but I was incredibly disappointed as I had the most bland fettuccini (I had the most amazing shrimp fettuccini at The Outback Steakhouse to make up for it). The Mexican themed restaurant was better with authentic food. With all the restaurants it was only allowed for you to book two days in advance which was a pain and required repeated visits to reception so we gave up very early on. Room service only offered salads and sandwiches- as there are all types of food being cooked feet away would it be too difficult to offer a better menu- they manage is so well at the nearby Royal.

Overall, not a bad hotel by a long way, but a few improvements would make it outstanding. Unfortunately it cannot change its position which is right in the noisiest area of Cancun which may influence your choice but you can hear very little of the din from your room.

Room Tip: We had room 222 nice view and reasonably quiet.

We got to the hotel around 4pm, our room was ready. We experienced prompt check in , very friendly staff, and we had a great room with ocean view. One of the few complaints accomodation wise is the AC unit is VERY VERY loud and would wake us up at night when it came on.
Our room was very clean, well kept, and the house keeping was superbe. The food here was delish, and the staff are very friendly, and helpful. This hotel has an excellent location only 7-8 min walk to clubs, restaurants, and shopping. There are 2 pools here and not enough loungers. One pool which would be the "quiet" pool had ZERO loungers around it, while the "action" pool has lots of loungers so you had to be up and get your space claimed by 9-10 am at the very lateset or you are out of luck. Also the restaurants at the hotel book up super fast so you have to book early am or a day in advance. All in all we had a great 2 week vacation in cancun, and id have no trouble in calling the Riu Palace Las Americas Home when we go again !

Room Tip: Our Room Was on the 8th floor had a great view, of the pool, and beach/ocean. Stayed it 822 it was p...
