Just returned from a 6 night stay last week at Gran Caribe. This was our 2nd trip to Mexico and our 5th all-inclusive. We had a very enjoyable stay but I really debated being able to give this resort 4 stores. The rooms are definitely worth it - we had a Junior Suite beachfront walkout which was awesome. Very large room - plenty of room for 2 queen beds, a table & chairs, and a rollaway bed. Large bathroom & shower, and a great terrace opening out onto the beach, plus our own reserved cabana - AND the wait service on the beach always promptly served us! Overall the maintenance & upkeep of the resort in total - common areas, pool, beach, restaurants was worthy of 4 stars as was the service everywhere. What is not worthy of 4 stars in my opinion is the food quality & choice as well as the pool. There are 5 restaurant choices, but only the 2 reservation-reqd restaurants (Maria's - mexican and Il Pescatore - Italian) served food that was better than average. The remainder were basic quick service restaurant quality fare or mixed-bag buffet. The special fiesta nights were similar. Regarding the pool, it was simply small for the resort, and therefore crowded, particularly when they had activities going on (water volleyball, aqua aerobics, etc). While there was a second pool primarily for small children, the main one simply did not feel relaxing - plus it was not shaded at all during the day which made it tough to spend much time in. Fortunately, with our level of room, we had access to the restaurants & pool next door at the Hyatt Zilara - we honestly did most of our eating and pool-time there. Both the restaurants and the pool were significantly more on level with what we would expect of a 4 star resort. The final portion of the Gran Caribe that I felt definitely needed upgrading was the 24 hour lounges - both the basic and the premier access on the 6th floor. The basic one was basically just a small buffet and drink dispenser off the main hallway - definitely kid food (nachos, burgers, hot dogs, sodas). I'd rate that a 2. The premier level lounge was better, with high end liquor and a pool table and service was great. However, it was small and tired looking. The basic 24 hour lounge at Zilara by contrast was fantastic - multiple HD tvs, 2 pool tables, a ping pong table, and plenty of nice furniture for lounging. We spent several hours there over the course of the week watching World Cup games and hanging out - very nice and put the Gran Caribe premier level to shame. Overall we had a great time and you can't beat the rooms, the cleanliness or the service. However, consider this a 4 star review with an asterisk! Also, just another tip to share - the water was very rough (red/yellow flags throughout the week) and not good for relaxing or swimming. We still enjoyed it most days during the week but it was tiring to stay in for long. On various excursions we were able to spend time at beaches off Isla Mujeres and off the lagoon side, both of which were very calm and much more like I've experienced in other Caribbean locations, so not sure if all hotels along the hotel zone strip have the same issue. Just something to be aware of.

So much they need up date and work on. The resort needs lots of stuff to be worked on. People that work there are not professional in customer service. When you ask something a question about rules ppl that work there will give you different answer. Its so disorganized. There was this one really nice girl that had some customer serves skills and very polite her name is Andy ( Andii Diiaz) and she works at OKI SPLASH. She made my day. I Hope there was more ppl like her working there.

This was my first all inclusive experience. The staff was excellent! It was family friendly and we met a lot of people from other countries. The food was good. We really enjoyed the mexican restaurant. I traded rooms with another family in our group because they needed 2 beds and both rooms were beautiful. The second room had a balcony that looked onto the ocean but also right onto the balcony next door. I liked my first full balcony better!! BUT, I was rarely in my room! Daniel Sanchez at the pool was an excellent waiter!!! He served us for several days and was amazing! We would definitely stay at this resort again. Clean beautiful resort, lots to do for all ages, the beach was gorgeous!!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a full balcony. They have an area just for adults if you do not want the "p...

We stayed at this hotel from the 11th to 25th May 2014. This was our first stay at the Gran Caribe Real but we have stayed next door in Feb 2013 at The Royal (Now the Hyatt Zilara).

Upon arrival we were given a glass of sparkling wine and quickly processed by the reception staff. The young man with blond hair (cant remember his name) was excellent and asked if we were celebrating any special occasions, to which we replied by fiancées birthday, he made a note of this and stated he would make sure we received a surprise. He also explained about the upgrades and that some people from the UK like to stay in their suite for one week and look at a possible upgrade the next but if we didn’t want to discuss that’s fine as we had a long flight.

In short we decided to listen and upgrade for the second week at the cost of 500 GBP in total for both of us. This was from the junior suite to a Gran Master Ocean view on the 6th floor, access to the VIP room on the 6th floor but more importantly full access to the Hyatt Zilara next door. I can confirm this was money well spent and what he didn’t know we had already booked our wedding at the Hyatt Zilara for April 2015 and had a meeting with our wedding co-coordinator the next day for food tasting.

The Rooms:
Week 1: we were in our junior suite we picked and to be honest it was massive, had two large windows overlooking the lagoon / rear pool and also a balcony where you could watch the sun go down. The room was very clean and well kept. The mini bar was fine and had a couple of beers, difference soft drinks and couple of waters. The safe, iron, ironing board, hair dryer, smellys etc were all fantastic. The reception guy must have got the maids to make up the room different each day with towels. It started with swans, bunnys and ended with a cake with chocolates on each tier and a bottle of champagne with a letter wishing a happy birthday . This follow up to his comments on checking in was impressive. Overall you couldn’t fault it.

Week 2: WoW, room 2603 is the only room in that category to have two bathrooms. It had a sitting area with TV, 2 x shower rooms with toilets and sinks, large area with twin sinks, bvlgari smellys, large bed, double Jacuzzi, balcony with sunbeds, small table and chairs on the balcony, optics (whisky, rum and tequila), mini bar with same as other room but loads of waters everywhere. I would highly recommend and view is amazing.

The Update apart from the room:
Beach Cabana was in good spot however next to the jagerbomb tent! The 24/7 VIP lounge was really good. You can get Jack Daniels up their and other drinks you cant get from the normal Gran Caribe bar but the waiter was fab. Access to the Hyatt was just great and while we were visiting to do our wedding tasting we wasn’t looking at upgrading but glad we did. You do notice the difference and their bar had grey goose, JD, other jacks and their 24-hour lounge is massive. Also the restaurants are great in the Gran and Hyatt but the Asiana and Marie Marie at on another level.

Service:
You couldn’t fault this during the whole holiday, even on the beach when it was really hot the waiters would come over and be smiling and making your holiday. If your not looking they will always put a drink down (same as your previous) and if you notice they will say, your not driving or why not. Made me laugh but its true, why not.

Also room service is from 7am to 11pm and it is quickly delivered and was nice to have on some occasions. It’s a shame they don’t have this 24/7 like next door as when you come back from CoCo bongos you could order to your room but this hotel does have the 24 hour lounge where you can get some snacks and hotdogs.

The main bar at a night is quite packed and hot but hey that’s what you expect with 30c plus weather.

Restaurants:
At the Gran Caribe all the restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner were fantastic. The service, food and wine were great and there are plenty of options for everyone. Also you can have breakfast at the Italian.

Other:
There were some Mexicans on their spring break to party during our stay and we think that is why the tent was there on the beach but you don’t hardly notice and they get up late afternoon, have a few/dance then get on a bus into town.

We would recommend and would go back to this hotel. If you have stayed next door before you will notice the difference and little things like the magic box, drink selection at the main bar unless you upgrade and also the ocean view / Jacuzzi bath in your room.

Also we were told the upgrade to the Hyatt will stop in 2015 which is a shame but hopefully both hotels can sort something out as it makes sense they both continue to support each other.

Regardless of the Hyatt we can honesty say you will not be disappointed with the Gran Caribe Real and its well worth the money. The security, cleanliness, service, food and drink at exceptional. Big thank you to the staff for making our holiday great

Room Tip: Consider the upgrade to the Gran master with vip / hyatt access

It was our 1st time ever visiting or doing all inclusive option. Too many drunk teenagers to count, not enough activities to do at the resort, drinks were not strong, food was not great. Breakfast was the best every morning. We ate lunch in the city every day. Staff however was wonderful. Knowing there were no expenses to worry about at the resort was nice. We had ants in our bed and room was always cleaned at the end of the day but then on some mornings they would wake us up to clean the room. Found out when we checked out that our band actually would get us into all of the "Real" resorts during our stay to try their food and drinks. If you want to use the phone they charge you even when it was a local number. They don't allow taxis to pick you up or off in their entrance. Anytime we needed anything we would leave the resort to purchase. Prices on items such as sunscreen were ridiculous. Great access to the pool and beach. Nice location to walk outside resort. For authentic seafood visit Puerto de Juarez. For shopping visit Mercado 28. For photo opps visit coco bongo. Watch out for local in costumes they stop to take great pictures w you but then ask you to pay them $20 USD for doing so. We definitely want to return soon but maybe not this resort.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are pretty much identical. All have a view of the ocean and similar set up.

The décor of the resort was beautiful. It felt very elegant. The drinks seem to be watered down, lacking good alcohol content. I made better drinks in my room. The amount of drunken teens seemed a bit overwhelming most of the times. The food at the buffets was decent, but to get a good meal it was best to make a reservation at either the Italian or Mexican restaurant. I expected more Mexican food and was greatly disappointed. My room was nice, but twice I had to kill some ants( not sure where they came from)? My T.V. didn't work and it was two days before it was working and that was after I went to find help, but not before my many calls to the front desk. Good location on the strip. I am 50/50 on if I would stay here again.

Room Tip: At the time of reservation please ask which direction your room faces? Try to get on the 6th Floor...
