Went there with my girlfriend. Bought all the souvenirs you see scattered across Cancun for about 30%-50% off

We traveled with a large wedding group to do our souvenir shopping with much ease. If you're the type of person would is willing to push their penny, then make your way down to Mercado 23. Much of the other markets are highly over prices, which makes this market one of the go to places to find good deals on unique items.

We went here after doing some research and asking the hotel staff about market 23 vs 28. We decided to go with 23 because it's where the locals go. Overall, the prices here for souvenirs are better than Cancun near the hotels (duh). But be sure to walk around and commit to the first vendor you see. Some of the same exact items' prices differ by seller. And be sure to negotiate. They will give a discount. Knowing Spanish goes a long way here. Since this is where the locals go, you're screwed if you don't know anything in Spanish. The vendors are all friendly and will try their best and pull out their phones to show you the price they're quoting you, but going with someone who speaks Spanish will save you a lot of trouble/time. We ate fresh mango, coconut, and some mysterious little fruit that tasted like a cross between a plum and a cherry and they were all great. And none of us got sick, which is a plus when you eat street food. Sadly we didn't try any 'real' food because we just ate lunch, but there were lines, which means the food must be good. The cab ride was $12 from our hotel (hotel zone) to this market. Have fun!

Just another complex of shops that are there to haggle you to no end. Most of the wares are cheap trinkets. The taxi driver that took us there must have been getting a kick back from a jewelry shop. They gave out nearly unlimited shots of tequila (yes, we did not have to drink them) and then tried to sell us overpriced jewelry. When that did not work they took us next door where the tequila was sold and tried to entice us into buying the overpriced tequila.

We visited Mercado 23 after visiting Mercado 28, which is pretty much better. Mercado 23 is more a vegetable and flea market, with some stores of souvenirs and grease- spoon restaurants (Mexican, seafood and Chinese). If you miss it, you are not missing much.
