“Location wonderful, rooms not”
Reviewed 17 April 2014

The location of this hotel is wonderful. It is right next to Chichen Itza and has a private entrance. You can go in early and beat the crowds. You can also return later in the day if you have the time. The exterior of the hotel and grounds are beautiful! You can eat on the patio which overlooks the wonderful gardens. Our room was quite spacious and we had a balcony with a beautiful view.. The rooms especially the bathroom part need a major remodel! Service was good and friendly as it is throughout the region.

Thank you very much for your visit !

You are right. Our standard rooms need remodeling and are they getting it! !00%. From tip to toe.
With spectacular new bathrooms. Our first couple of rooms will be ready by month's end. we are doing this extremely quietly so as to not disturb anyone, and we are succeeding, that is why you did not notice it.

We look forward to your return visit. The light and sound spectacle is to be re-inagurated in a couple of weeks and it promises to be the best ever.

Until then, may you always enjoy safe and happy travels!

I loved Mayaland but can see how some would complain that it is dated or needs freshening up. It is what I would expect at a grand old hotel in a humid climate. Internet is available in the lobby - outlets are limited - it was built before every family member over 3 needed a smartphone and tablet. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The property's age showed but so did its history and authenticity. Room size is generous and each has a large balcony area. The observatory was visible from our room - we did not pay a premium for the view. walking around the hotel and grounds was an exciting experience. While venturing around what likely was an employee only area I noticed that the wall of one side of the hotel was missing and the interior of some rooms exposed. Across from it was the top of an unexcavated ruin - right next to the hotel. Remains of the old Mayan trail leading to Chichen Itza crossed the property.

And that's the high point - it is next to the ruins and has pre-opening access to Chichen Itza so visitors can see the site before the crowds and vendors arrive. The early access alone was worth the price of the hotel.

Food was overpriced but that should be expected based on the location. We had a very good dinner off of an alternate menu that we were given when we commented the primary menu was a little "fancier" than we were looking for. The breakfast buffet was awful - hotdogs for sausage and questionable eggs. The lunch buffet had good and bad; local food was good, pizza was disgusting but exactly what I'd expect from buffet pizza in the Yucatan peninsula.

For an interesting experience drive in to the nearby community and try one the small family-run dives where little English spoken and few tourists visit. Service is a little slow because they'll make whatever you want but your business is appreciated. Tip well - regardless of how tight your budget is - you can help people who appreciate the little they have.

Room Tip: Come with reasonable expectations - it's old, it's authentic.

Thanks your visit and for for pointing out why The Mayaland is the "Real Thing" !

Great review. It reminds intelligent visitors about the essence of the travel experience, so many a times lost in today's travel environment.

Even though we are remodeling our rooms, making their bathrooms even larger, better lit naturally, and fitting them with additional hook ups and making them gadget and internet friendly, we are keeping intact the very essence of this grand dame of hotels, precisely because of our appreciation for the virtues you mention.

We look forward to having the honor of your visit again. Until then, may you always enjoy safe and happy travels!

Before our arrival, we were concerned about whether three nights and two full days in Chichen Itza was too much; after settling into our beautiful room in the old part of the Mayaland Hotel, with a verandah looking out over the terrace towards the private entrance to the ruins, we wondered if we should stay longer. I love this place, with gracious and friendly staff (with their delightful Mayan sense of humor). Yes, We might quibble about some small things, expensive water, restaurant cuisine okay but not fantastic, lack of internet outside the foyer and bar, but we didn't come to Chichen Iza for those things (and water was equally expensive inside the archeological site). The setting is stunningly beautiful, and after a morning of walking around the archeological site in the sun, an afternoon lazing by the pool was perfect. Piste is worth a (short) visit, and if you're staying for several nights as we were, it's worth walking over to the nearby Hacienda Chichen Itza for dinner one night - a great chef and really good food. Having the back entrance to the archeological site is a real plus. You can visit the ruins in the morning before the crowds (the site is packed by 11am), come back to the hotel for lunch, siesta by the pool and return to the site (it's an all-day ticket) later in the afternoon when most of the bus tours have left. We had a great experience and will happily return.

Room Tip: If you can, get a room in the original part of the hotel. I'm sure the new wing is nice (manage...

We stayed here over Spring Break 2014 and traveled with 6 & 9 year old boys. After traveling from Playa del Carmen we were pleasantly surprised...an oasis in the jungle. Boys loved that we could take a break during the heat of the day and swim/lunch. They also enjoyed the planetarium show as it prepared them for visiting Chichen Itza.

Spacious rooms if you are in the villas. Booked directly on their site and prepaid for the breakfast option.

My hubby and I have been to Chichen when you could walk up on the temples - so it is now disappointing that you can't get near anything as it's roped off and turned into a walking tour with more vendors then paid park guests. Having said that, the boys enjoyed it as they didn't know any better ;)

Thanks for visiting with us, and bringing your boys along!

You may want to consider a visit to Uxmal, the Maya Civilization's Grandest architectural achievement and in the word's of America's foremost architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, humanity's best!

You can climb the temples at Uxmal. It is simply spectacular. You made reservations directly with us, so you may want to check our same web site for more information, mayaland.com

We hope to be of service to you again soon. Until then, safe and happy travels!

My two sons, ages 9 and 12, and I arrived at the Bungalows at Mayaland in a rental car on an early evening after a flight into Cancun from the US. The plan was to get up early, see the ruins when they opened at 8, and then move on to Uxmal.

The room was spacious and very clean. All of the employees were gracious and helpful and almost all spoke some English. It was the priciest accommodation of our 10-day Yucatan adventure, but the proximity to the ruins made the extra cost worth it. The food at the restaurant was also the most expensive of the trip, and while it was decent, in this case, the extra cost was not worth it. The property is lovely - almost idyllic. The only negative is that there was a charge for bottled water. It seems to me that at least one or two bottles should be supplied at no cost.

I love old hotels. This one is up there! So here's the deal, If you are going to charge American prices, you should provide the same services. Wifi that works everywhere not just in the lobby, and staff the speak any foreign language, and included breakfast would be a good start. I speak English French and German, most of the staff could speak none of it.

What the staff lacked in language they made up for in enthusiasm to help. They were super awesome as soon as you got across what you wanted.

The private entrance to the ruins is great. Don't bother with a room that looks over the observatory for more money. The gardens are really cool too look at at night. The AC was great, bed comfortable, and it was super easy to get to the ruins. This is important, because you want to get there as soon as they open to avoid the crowds, heat, and annoying vendors.

If you're into photography get a shot of the observatory with the sunset in the background. There is a place you access from the stairwell near the office and gift shop that has a stunning view of it. The staff know where!

There are lots of tours and families.

We share your love for Grand Hotels. And by definition, Grand comes with maturity, uniqueness and a deep impression on the people and surroundings that engulf it.

Our collaborators are ALL Mayan. Truly GREAT people. We learn from them every day. Most have devoted the endeavors of their lifetime working with us. Most understand at least 3 languages; Some are able to speak in 7 different languages. I challenge you to find a single establishment in Colorado that has that gift within it's staff. Yes, even in one of my favorite resorts in the USA, The Broadmore in Colorado Springs.... which by the way rents bungalows for upwards of $5,000 USD a night for a three bedroom facility (They are exquisite and appropriate for their environment), as are ours, of Mayan inspiration in their design, literally all hand made, unique and rent for under $170 per night. That world-class resort does not enjoy a staff as multilingual as ours (they have over 2,000 collaborators; we have less than 200). Perhaps you did not spend enough time with us to realize how blessed we are.

So come back soon, with more time to learn and enjoy about our people and their customs and abilities.
Until then, may you enjoy safe and happy travels!

Place is a little pricey and dated. Get to the ruin early and avoid the bus crowds from cancun which arrive as you are headed back to the hotel.
Restautant is overpriced. i orderd steak with prosciutto and another on our party order steak with shrimp. we each got the steak-no shrimo or prosciutto and his was 4.00 more expensive.

Room Tip: eat in the small town nearby.

Thanks for your visit!

We are remodeling all rooms in the south wing, where you stayed. Quietly; One at a time, so as to not disturb even the birds around us.
