“Great for family”
Reviewed 2 March 2005

We have been taking our family to the allegro for the past 4 years, we love it! The staff is friendly and courteous, the rooms are comfortable, and the extracuricular activities are fun. There is always food, fun and relaxation to be found. The best beach in Cozumel! Oh and the spa is great for that needed massage when you arrive.

The overall experience at the Allegro was pretty average. We were at the Allegro for a wedding. The staff was very accomodating aside from the check in staff.
The rooms were fine, if somewhat dark. But they were very clean and newly renovated. The beach was fine, although people were allowed to reserve chairs for the entire day by waking up at 6AM and placing their beach towels on the chairs. (this is a good tip for people who are planning to go there. Make sure to switch in your towel card the night before so you'll have a beach towel in the morning).
The activities staff made the resort unique. They really put energy into the shows (even if they were a little cheesy), and activities. Make sure to play the games by the pool as you can win snorkeling trips.
The drinks were completely watered down, but at least they were free (or included). The food, especially the snack bar wasn't good at all unless you are a teenager. All pizzas, hot dogs, nachos. Surprisingly the Italian restaurant was the best food we ate there. No kidding!
The best bet is to rent a jeep and drive around the island and eat dinner in town. That was the only Mexican food we ate the entire trip.
The check in staff was very unkind and refused to help us check our flight status when they didn't have anymore internet cards. Other people were at the front desk having similar difficulties and the front desk folks were very mean and condescending. It's a shame as the rest of the staff were all wonderful.
The boat staff was very nice and entertaining and accomodating.
If you want to see Mexico at all, make sure to get out of the resort. Snorkeling trips are also cheaper in town than at the resort.
hope this helps!

We stayed at the Allegro in Feb, booked last minute and had a wonderful time. Rooms-We were lucky to get a renovated room but even though it was renovated the beds are very hard. The room would have been a bit crowded if there had been four of us with not a lot of space to store clothes etc especially if you have scuba gear with you. Otherwise the rooms were very clean with lots of bottled water and we were not bothered by smells or humidity. Food- we made reservations at each of the restaurants the first day we were there and had no problem, The atmosphere at the grill was wonderful with candlelight and great service. The buffet was a little repetitive but always lots of fresh bread , fruit and cheeses. My husband has been to the Iberostar and says the food is better there.
Beach- the beach was great, water great for swimming and snorkelling- lots of fish out by the buoys, wach out for jellyfish and sand fleas( I
was very sensitive to them and had lots and lots of bites but my husband had not a one, take some calamine just in case). The 3 reef snorkel was great, lots of fish, saw a couple of sea turtles and little stingrays. Husband did reef dives and wreck dive with dive shop on site and was very happy with the staff and boats. Hobie cats were fun to sail after a quick lesson. Look for a couple of big stingrays at the end of the day when the fishing boats come in off the end of the dock. Nightly entertainment was fun most nights. All in all we really enjoyed the resort, relaxing and lots of friendly people. This is not a five star but I think if you go expecting average food, hard beds but great beach, water and people you will have a great time.

My husband and just stayed at this resort last week and wouldn't recommend it. We were very disappointed in the food (although we love to go to nice restaurants and hate fast food, so we are probably not the norm) and especially the drinks (if you are concerned with quantity of drinks, not quality, you may be ok). The service and rooms aren't very good either. The only positives are that the grounds and landscaping is pretty (there are iguanas running around!) and they have a lot of activities.

The hotel is pretty sneaky, which is why I give it a terrible review: they have bottles of liquor that are display only. They will then poor a different cheap liquor in your drink! If you ask for the better liquor (Bacardi, for example), they will give it to you, but some of the liquors we were told were display ONLY. My husband asked for a shot of tequila and you could tell it had water in it since we were drinking it straight.

The hotel makes it very hard for you to book their 'nice' restaurants. They limit the hours they are available to book for you, they make you wait in line, and they are very quick to tell you they are booked and try to push you away. They also limit use of the 3 restaurants to one time only. We did manage to get reservations by being persistent. We noticed that the restaurants are very small and have very few tables (compared to how many guests are staying there) and there were many vacant tables for times they said were booked! The food was somewhat good, so it must be more expensive for the hotel and they try to limit it.

The hotel is a $15 cab ride from town so we felt somewhat confined to the resort and couldn't go elsewhere for food and drink. I would recommend either staying in Playa de Carmen (and don't do all-inclusive), which was lively and fun with lots of shopping and good restaurants, or paying for the most expensive hotel on Cozumel, since this type of vacation usually involves so much time at the hotel.

The workout room is unairconditioned and the equipment is really old. The beach chairs are uncomfortable, and the rooms are musty (our clothes all smelled when we got home) and the beds are very hard and uncomfortable. It is very humid and I never slept well there, and it is not fun to be uncomfortable on vacation. And we stayed in a renovated room! The rooms are also in hut-looking type buildings that are pretty far from the beach. The rooms do have balconies with hammocks on them, which is nice.

This is definitely not a 4 star hotel.

At check we were given a renovated room 5401 we didnt have any problems with the room it was clean and very nicely decorated. The maid did an excellent job someone came back at night with fresh towels, and turned the beds back. The only problem we had with the plumbing was that we didnt know that in Mexico they do not flush the paper, there is a basket provided, its alittle strange to us, but when in Mexico do as the Mexicans do. We really loved the breakfast with all the fresh fruit, the ommlet bar was great, lots of fresh juices and breads. Lunch was easy down by the pool something for everyone. We really had a nice meal at the Mexican restaurant the service was great. The resort was very clean and the grounds were beautiful. I would be nit picking to find things wrong with this resort, the staff worked very hard to make our vacation wonderful. The nightly show was fun and entertaining. The pools were clean and well maintained. The beach was beautiful. We would go back !

This resort has a lot of good points:
The property and landscaping are beautiful, the pools and jaccuzi are very clean, and the beach spectacular. They maintain the public areas and the exterior of the buildings to a high standard. The staff are friendly and there are many activities to choose from. The evening entertainment is also very good, and they have a show each night, plus a disco.
And Bad points:
Some of the rooms need updating and repair - we had to switch rooms twice for various reasons. The food in the main restaurant was some of the worst we have ever had in any hotel we have ever stayed in, (and we travel at least four times each year)!!! so we know good food.
Some other guests who had stayed at other Allegro resorts also said the food was worse here than the other Allegro's.
The quality of the wines was very poor, they had very few premium liquors and the beer choices were limited.
To summaize:
If you go there, do not expect luxuriously appointed rooms or gourmet dining because you will get neither! If you are happy to put up with average drinks and poor food, but in a place that looks like paradise, you will have a great time. Vacation date, Feb 19-26, 2005.

My husband and I spent a week at the Allegro Cozumel in February and had a wonderful time. We didn't leave the property except to dive - and the diving w/Dive Palencar located right at the hotel was fabulous. The staff was friendly, the food and drinks were bountiful and good, and we enjoyed the beach volleyball, pool hijinks, and nightly staff shows.
