The Havana Club that everyone has been asking about and can't find? It still exists! We went this past week (Nov 14 2008). It moved because of the hurricane, but has relocated to the Forum shop building. It's small, but still has a good humidor and REAL CUBANS.
They also carry a good selection of other Cuban retail things like Paintings by a Cuban painter, maps, humidors, etc. The bar is small but has good liquors and beers. Also a very comfertable couple of leather couches with a nice table. It is a great spot for a couple of friends to chill out away from the party scene for a quiet drink and smoke.
Keep in mind that NO ONE, and I really mean no one, on the Island knows what or where this place is. Heck, I had to add it to Trip Advisor just to write a review. I asked about 5 people at the resort we stayed at and noone could tell me. I called the operator to connect me and she couldn't. My fiancee and I then walked around downtown and asked each bar we stopped at where to find the Havana Club and noone could. We ended up going to the Forum shop building and stumbled upon it. Turns out they moved, then became club Blue, and changed back to Havana club last year.
So to everyone trying to find a Real Cuban cigar on the island, Do not go to any of the small shops. Do not even buy one at your resort (I did and got burnt, see my review of the Wyndham). The only place I know of for sure is the Havana Club.
I did stop into the Havana Cigar Co., which is a shop on the main strip. It didn't sit right even though the cigars appeared geniune. They have a ton of anti-counterfitting propoganda, too much. Also, he comes into the humidor with you and will not leave until you do. They even post signs asking you to not touch the cigars. I can't buy something if I can't inspect it. Stick with the Havana Club, enjoy a great smoke and have a great time.
