Nice place. Been there twice now and enjoyed myself both times. Service is excellent, all of the bartenders, maids, waiters and absolutely everyone else are just great. (Octavio the waiter is a favorite). The only exception to this is the host at the 'fine dining' restaurant. What a jerk! He acts like you, (the paying customer), should be honored that you are being allowed to speak to him or that he is gracing you with his company. No greeting, no smile, no connection to the guest at all - he just phones it in and acts like he would rather be anywhere else but there. I always give someone a second chance just in case maybe the first time they might have just been having a bad day or whatever but this guy has been the same every single time I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with him, (many), or watched him converse with others. Give this guy a broom and put him to work sweeping the parking lot or better yet, a scrub brush and put him in charge of the toilets.
Breakfast is always good in either the buffet or inside in the fine dinning, (where there is a smaller buffet or you can order off of the menu), venue. I personally like the omelets that the gal makes in the open air buffet area. I always find something interesting on the buffet line then bring it to the omelet lady and have her make me a custom creation - which she always does with a smile no matter how busy she has been. (Drop her a few bucks tip if you go this route as it's kind of a hassle for her sometimes). Lunch is ok - your standard all inclusive stuff on the buffet or go outside by the pool where there are burgers, dogs, fries, salads, etc. and excellent home made onion rings. Dinner buffet, (like lunch), is ok but I always hit town for dinner with the exception of maybe one or two dinners at the 'fine dinning' venue at the hotel depending on the menu which changes every two days.
A great restaurant that is just down the street towards town, (a very easy walk), is The Lobster House. Please let me be more specific - The ORIGINAL Lobster House. There will be some confusion here that I will clear up for you in a moment - The ORIGINAL Lobster House, (that has been there for many years), is the one that is the furthest from the hotel and closest to town. If you are handed a menu, LEAVE IMMEDIATELY as YOU ARE IN THE WRONG PLACE! Step out the door, go left, take several steps and you will see a statue of a seated Fidel Castro, go left into the gateway entrance, over a rickety foot bridge, (think Indiana Jones), and you will see Jimmy, (the Captain), smiling and greeting you - you are now in the ORIGINAL Lobster House. Some clarification is needed here. The ORIGINAL Lobster House has been there for many years, it is run by Fernando and his son, Fernando JR.. As I understand it, years ago Fernando's brother opened another restaurant RIGHT NEXT DOOR and called it The Lobster House. This brother copied the logo, signage, dessert, (Key Lime Pie), and opened his doors. This "phoney" Lobster House serves other items besides lobster and has a menu like a traditional restaurant. The ORIGINAL Lobster House ONLY SERVES LOBSTER, PERIOD. There is no menu. You walk in and you are shown a large container of fresh lobster tails on ice. You then select the tail(s) that you like and they are then weighed in front of you, you are quoted a price and you pay by the weight of the tail(s). Once prepared, (perfectly), they add to the plate a nice portion of steamed vegetables, (incredible), and the absolute best rice I have ever consumed all included in the price that you were quoted for the weight of the lobster. They have a nice little bar that serves huge cocktails and ice cold beer. The wine selection is limited but trust me you are not going to care. After dinner you are served a nice taste of a chilled banana concoction that is wonderful. Save room for dessert - home made key lime pie made by the owner's sister that is to die for. Occasionally they offer bacon wrapped shrimp as an appetizer as well as conch chowder, (awesome), if they can get fresh conch but that's it. This place is a MUST DO for anyone that likes lobster and is probably the best lobster on the island. Just make sure that you go to the correct place or you will be disappointed. If you are, send me the bill. Enjoy!
