“Comfortable Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2014 via mobile

This is the 5th time we have stayed here. What I like is the bed and breakfast option. In the evening we walk into town and eat at some amazing places. It is a older hotel, not with all the bell and whistles many places have. It works perfect for us because our dive boat picks us up at the pier and drops us off. We do not use the resort dive company, we opt for a small dive operater that we have been diving with for years.

Hotel Cozumel is one of the most convenient on Cozumel for scuba divers. A Dive Paradise branch office/store is located just across the street (accessible via tunnel under the busy street) where there are dive lockers, wash tubs, showers and a pier where you are picked up and dropped off by dive boats. There is also an area dedicated to divers for check out dives near the pier. Can't beat that! The dive area does, however, get crowded when more than one boat arrives.
The hotel has two buffet-style restaurants, and one pool-side snack bar/bar. One restaurant is near the diving pier by the ocean, is open at lunch and offers mostly Mexican food. The breakfast and dinner restaurant off the hotel lobby has a varied menu to cater to most tastes with special egg (breakfast) and pasta (dinner) cook stations. Those lines can be long and slow. We got the all-inclusive option for our week-long stay as we had family with us. We had all our meals here except for a few dinners in town. The buffets work well for families with varied tastes but it is a nice change to go out for some of your dinners. Mostly, the restaurant and hotel staff is pleasant and accommodating but some management can be a bit surly. It helps if you speak Spanish.
We paid extra for an upgrade to the ocean view thinking it would be quieter than the pool view rooms. There wasn't much street noise and we could see the ocean and sunset, but after comparing our room with a pool-side room, it really wasn't worth the cost as the pool-side room was nicer than ours. Our room was clean, with two double beds; a good size with a balcony (and rods to dry dive gear) but it was very tired, needed updating. Our room a/c stopped working and after a call to the front desk, a maintenance man was sent up within minutes to fix it.
The pool is huge and about 4 feet deep. It is very popular, lots of children using it. Its nice to swim in before and after a day's diving. However, it has tiles falling off in chunks and a slightly disquieting murky quality to the water.
We stayed at the Hotel Cozumel six years ago and it has lost much of its luster since then, it is showing its age and lack of proper maintenance. Still, it is a great place to come for divers with family, the convenience and pricing outweighs the poor maintenance.

Room Tip: Don't bother with ocean view room upgrade,

the staff is nice and try to make the best of it. the hotel is average and mediocre, rooms are old and musty, no décor and simply out dated. the swimming pool is nice, basically that's the only thing good about the hotel, but its always packed. the food needs a lot of improvement, its tasteless, the only good thing is the breakfast with the omelet station, but other than that everything else is terrible. They have a snack bar in the pool area, they serve nachos and hotdogs which are just poor in taste. They also offer a bar with all sort of drinks, which are water down and with no taste at all. I do have to mention the staff once more, we had a great welcoming and they were always ready to serve you with a smile.

Room Tip: if you are looking for a not too expensive place stay here, its pretty average

Stayed here for 5 nights last week with a small dive group. Big Mistake. The resort was built a while ago and nothing has been done with it since. The resort seemed to cater to a local crowd. There were more than a few cars from families that came her for vacation, and it seemed the staff couldn't care less about Americans.

The afternoon front staff was awful. When we arrived and unpacked we promptly went the pool for a beer and a dip. Didn't take long for our towels to be stolen and the afternoon staff ready and eager to charge us $30 each for a replacement. Wouldn't even let me talk to a manager. I worked it out with other staff, but the lady behind the desk was awful.

Speaking of the pool, it is large. And hot, and dirty!! The last day we were there it had so much suntan oil/lotion floating on it you could make a film like a bubble if you touched you finger and thumb together and dipped it into the water!! The pool needs a major facelift since it looks like any repairs have been careless.

The rooms were old but large enough. The beds are a hard mattress put on a concrete pad. The pillows flat. The bathrooms are small. The AC did work well though. Nothing has been done since it was built and it shows.

Food. One word. SUCKS!! Most of the food was overcooked. Salad and fruit seemed OK, and the best hot food was the tacos. A box lunch we all got for a day out was a inedible ham and cheese sandwich. The hamburgers were a sick version of SPAM and not the ground beef ones they had last year I understand.

Bar was OK, but they couldn't make a margarita anywhere on the resort. They did have Sol on draft which was pretty good. There are definitely better places to stay than this rundown resort.

The only good thing is their proximity to Dive Paradise right across the street.

The resort was great! Staff was very friendly and spoke a ton of English which is helpful to a non-Spanish speaking girl like me. The beds were a tad hard but the room was super clean and had a great view! Beach was fabulous and easily accessible. It was perfect for me since I'm not a diver so I had the beach practically to myself until the boats came back with the other divers around 1pm. I'd head to the pool at that time and again it wasn't crowded either. Plenty of space to myself and quiet enough to enjoy my book. Breakfast was my favorite meal and the snack bar was fantastic as well! The servers around the pool were an added bonus so I didn't event have to move to get my fill of piña coladas! All and all fantastic stay! Close to shopping but secluded enough to not even know the traffic and crowds were outside. Oh and lastly, free reliable wifi!!

One of the best vacations yet very nice hotel very simple but pleasant, staff was great, the best vacation for diving reefs are gorgeous water is blue and clear ,you can dive right out of hotel grounds across the street going under the tunnel and you can swim in natural swimming pool just perfect. All inclusive deal was reasonable food all day in different areas of the resort very good and fresh. Very close to shopping and taxi was very affordable if you want to go to the public beach. We took a trip around the island I recommend to go see how they make organic tequila there and taste 12 year old tequila and some flavored ones too. They have some Mayan ruins to see and you can go crazy with buying jewelry there all made in Mexico not China. I loved the trip and liked the hotel for the price the only thing I was not impressed about was United airlines everything now is extra to pay for checked luggage snacks booked seats on line but didn't get them but overall trip was success I will miss the people. Great job Cozumel Hotel.
