In the last 5 years we have travelled to Zihuateneho, Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen and Tulum for the annual summer vacation. This was by far the most welcoming and relaxing. It is a very well run little 50 room establishment that tries to keep you happy by anticipating your needs. The staff was great and everyone knew our names by the second day.
Room was very comfortable, the AC worked well, very clean with no musty odors associated with the tropics and beds were not as hard as other Mexican hotels as they had some sort of a matress topper. We slept well as this is a quiet little establishment populated mostly by 50ish couples (like us) and not a lot of children. Every room has an ocean view but the beach bar and small ocean frontage were so nice we spent very little time on the balcony even though the ocean view was perfect. Beach was small but plenty of lounge chairs, snorkeling was fun and good bar service to the beach area. Bring water shoes as there is some rocky areas getting in and out of the water. Sundays on the Island are the only day with no cruise boats in town and the beachclub next door has great Live Salsa music.
We did get the all inclusive package and would do so again. The breakfasts and lunch were great. Food was fresh and the covered outdoor cafe area was perfect. We ate some dinners in town but did eat a few dinners at the hotel sa well.
I did play golf one day and enjoyed the course. Bring a lot of golf balls as anything that goes into the rough is a lost ball. Went to the ruins and had a guide walk us through the area, very worthwhile. We rented a jeep from Isis as recomended by everyone here at tripadvisor. Do rent a car as driving around town is easy and parking is not a big hassle. Trips to the east side of the island were the highlight of the trip. Went to the mainland for a day and rented another car for a drive south from PDC.
I was concerned about Cozumel as it has a reputation as just an over run cruise boat port of call but that really wasn't the case. We chose this hotel because of the golf and excellent value. We discovered you can spend a lot more and get a lot less than this place has to offer. I'm trying to figure out what I was dissapointed with but can't come up with anything significant. I was suprised that Cozumel seems to run on US currency, the Mega superstore even rings up transactions in Dollars and makes change in same.
I had struck up a conversation over breakfast withanother guest and she told me she had been returning to cozumel every summer for 30 years. The fact that she was staying at the Playa Azul should tell you something. We have a practice of trying a new location and a new resort every year but this place is nice enough that we may have to amend that policy and return next year.

Room Tip: No refrigerators ion the rooms. Buy a styro ice chest and get ice from the bar to keep room drinks...

After staying at the Presidente last year, we wanted to spend less but have all of the same things that are important to us: great beach with a walk-in surf area, great snorkeling, ocean front room, excellent reputation and proximity to town. Playa Azul gave us all that and more and this will be our go-to place from now on. We just can’t say enough great things about this hotel and its staff. We stayed from May 17-25, 2012.
BEACH: Since we spend most of our time on the beach, this is a very important consideration for us. While the hotel’s beach looks small in most pictures, it is definitely large enough to accommodate many guests without feeling crowded – we always felt we had our own space and everyone was spread out. And we never heard a thing from the beach club. Always plenty of chairs and palapas. There is a nice little walk-in area to the water on the property. Just to the left and the right of the hotel, there are also great walk-in beach areas. The water is crystal clear and exactly those Caribbean blue tones you long for. One of things we loved about the location of Playa Azul was the beach options – we thought it offered the best of all worlds. You can walk north (through the old Sol Cabanas) and experience some of the most beautiful, sugary, soft, powder white sand on the island as you walk past the El Cozumeleno and Melia properties – made for a beautiful way to get some exercise every day and the sand reminded us of what you’d find on the mainland. To the south, you can walk up to the Club Cozumel Caribe (CCC) for some boat-people watching.
SNORKELING: The snorkeling right out front of the hotel is exceptional. Great water clarity and an abundance to see. A great snorkel is to drop in either to the left (near jet skis) and drift snorkel north all the way to the old Sol Cabanas (or vice versa, depending on the surface current). Also, walk south to the Buccano’s beach club and drop in there and drift snorkel further south to the CCC ladder. It is all amazing. Saw all of the colorful usual suspects as well as some first-time sights for us…squid, brown spotted eel and sand divers. If you love to snorkel or are a novice, this is the place for you.
ROOM: We stayed in Oceanfront Suite 216. Perfect, unobstructed views of the gorgeous beach and ocean. King bed in a big bedroom with a big front room (tvs with good cable in both), vanity and dressing area in between and separate bathroom (with another vanity). While I don’t think this class of room is the most updated, it was spotlessly cleaned every day. The A/C was super good and the hot water was plentiful with great pressure. The balcony had 2 chairs and a table - what a perfect place to sit and listen to the waves. Actually, even with the door closed, we could hear the surf at night. Ahhhh.
DINING: The food here was really terrific. We opted for the All-Inclusive option so ate breakfast and lunch on property every day and dinner 2 nights. Breakfast buffet always had 2 yummy local favorites that changed daily, made to order station (eggs, omelets, waffles), bacon, sausage, breads, cereals, yogurts, and chilaquiles. For lunch, their fish con ojo (fish fillet in garlic butter) was one of the best we had on the island. Fish fajitas, shrimp fajitas, ceviche, guac and pico were also delicious. Had dinner twice in the nicer restaurant, Chan Kaan, as it is air-conditioned. The beef tenderloin, stuffed chicken, asparagus salad and chile pepper soup were outstanding.
SERVICE: This report wouldn’t be complete without emphasizing the wonderful staff – hard working people with friendly, fantastic attitudes that go out of their way to make sure you are completely satisfied. Wish I could remember all names, but big thanks to Marzel, Salvador, Gil, Kermit, and Juan for making our stay so enjoyable.
MISC: Wifi works perfectly in lobby and at beach bar - manageable reception in certain parts of the room. While we did not use the Spa, some friends told us their massages were fantastic. Beautiful beach view from the open-air restaurant. Bring bug spray in case of rain (that’s true for wherever you stay).

We really loved the smallness of the resort, the personal service where everyone knows your name and room number after the first day, the location on the beach, the peace and quiet of the place and the Cozumel vibe it offers. Can’t wait to return and sit in those adirondack chairs under the wood gazebo and listen to the water and watch the crabs.

This little resort is absolutely charming. There are many cozy touches--like a wall full of candles in the evening--that make it special. In May there were very few people, but were told that even when full it doesn't seem full! It is very quiet in the evening, and that is how we like it!

The beach is small but perfect for sunbathing and snorkeling--absolutely gorgeous. With water shoes, you could definitely go for a swim. The snorkeling right there was just as good as the day trip we did from a boat elsewhere in Cozumel.

The hotel is older and not in 5-star condition, but very clean and comfortable. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive even though away from the front desk they speak just enough english. My husband left before breakfast each day to go fishing and the kitchen made him a box breakfast to take with him. The breakfast buffet was great, but the restaurant was a little pricey. We went into town each evening and found some great places to eat. We were also on the 4th floor with a beautiful view of the ocean from our patio. There is wifi--our connection was slow but not impossible. We did see a couple tiny house lizards in our room but that doesn't freak me out. The small shower head in the large shower had great pressure. The pillows were nice.

Went to the spa each day and enjoyed excellent services and value with their daily specials. Yes, the spa is along the busy road, but the beautiful atmosphere in the spa really made up for some minor road noise.

My husband and I both felt for the price, you could find nothing like this in the states. We WILL go back and would recommend it to our friends!

No one could ask for a better place to stay! Away from the hustle and bustle - This property is first class! The staff is wonderful! Regardless of the request or question every individual, from the front desk to the restaurant to the bar to housekeeping could not have been more helpful and welcoming! We are already planning a return trip in 2013. We cannot make enough positive comments about Playa Azul! Cozumel is a beautiful island - folks are very friendly and helpful and it is SAFE! I rented a jeep from Executive with the assistance of Playa Azul staff and travelled the island ALONE while my husband fished.

Room Tip: The ocean front master suites are huge!

Hotel Playa Azul at Cozumel has been one of the best places y have stayed at. This small friendly hotel with Golf included in room rate is a very good choice if you visit Cozumel. It has a private small beach in front of rooms and swimming pool. A nice bar located at the beach is an excellent spot for sun settings every day. The golf court is at 10 minutes from Playa Azul; while playing you can see several kind of animals, from small and medium size alligators or caimans, to different kind of birds, iguanas, frogs, etc. The Hotel is very clean, with modern mexican home style. People is very friendly and competent; they make you feel at home. Food and services are very good. Ask to meet Martha, she runs the hotel and speaks fluent english and can give you very good tips about the island places to visit.

Room Tip: All rooms have a nice seashore view but ask for those that are just facing the sunset

We stayed for 4 days starting 4/30/2012. Playa Azul was a great choice. It was close to the golf course, peacefully quiet and had great service. We were in room 401 and I highly recommend it.
It's on the top floor, on the corner, has great views and a hot tub on the balcony.
Have to agree with the guy that said the door latches need a good going over...HA
Our new favorite place in Coz. We'll be back.
