Casa Martillo met all our needs. We had two couples sharing this condo. It is clean, good service, & well kept. Staff was extremely pleasant & responsive. The location is very good as it is within walking distance of groceries & taxi stands. Neighborhood is quiet and totally safe. The owner is very helpful with communication. I must warn you that if stairs are a problem, the only bathroom is on the second floor. This did not bother us. The beds are very hard, but this seems to be universal in Cozumel. The only suggestion I would have is that the pool could use a handrail as it would make entering and exiting easier. This is not five star luxury living, but more than comfortable and we definitely will return again.

Liked best: Quiet, could not even hear the couple in the next bedroom.
Liked least: hardness of bed, but this is universal there.

“Convenient, Economical, Well-Managed and Well-Equipped Condo”

I recommend Casa Martillo for most travelers, though not for a romantic getaway or honeymoon. It’s a short walk to town, though we chose to rent a car in order to have full independence to explore Cozumel’s numerous beaches and varied restaurants. The condos are simple but provide all kitchen necessities and condo furnishings, although a reading lamp or two in the living room would be a welcome alternative to overhead ceiling fan lights. The ceiling fans throughout the condo help keep the rooms comfortable, and the owner wisely emphasizes careful use of Cozumel’s limited energy resources. Each condo is provided with a constant supply of filtered water, a valuable consideration for both drinking and teeth brushing. The wireless internet service works well both indoors and out, with almost no dead spots. The communal telephone in the palapa is adequate for local calls, so I did not miss having a phone in our individual condo. The pool is small but consistently kept clean.
The owner is clearly concerned about his guests comfort, and as part of the checkout form, encourages suggestions that will benefit future guests. The cleaning, maintenance, and management staff are friendly and do a good job. When we arrived and found the hot water shower valves clogged, the maintenance man responded to my limited phrasebook Spanish by immediately repairing the plumbing. When rowdy neighbors drank by the pool long after quiet hours, the manager spoke to them and successfully reinforced Casa Martillo’s 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. quiet time rule.
We experienced several noise issues while staying at Casa Martillo, but some of these were attributable to Cozumel in general. Like some other islands we have visited, Cozumel does not appear to regulate barking neighborhood dogs, but the racket generally fades into the background after a day or two. We welcomed a few lively days and nights on the island during Carnaval, but were not prepared for the seemingly nightclub sized amps booming from a house one block down the street during an all-night house party the weekend following Carnaval. The mechanicals in our condo were loud. Some kind of insulation to muffle the water pump in our condo would be a reasonable improvement. As I mentioned above, after the manager spoke to the other guests, we suffered no further extended after-hours noise from other guests. We also found that the hotel trick of running the AC on the fan setting during the night blocked most noise, especially in one of the two bedrooms.
Casa Martillo is small, reasonably priced, convenient, and safe. Unfortunately, alcohol abuse cloaked as partying can be a risk in any hotel or condo setting, and Casa Martillo is not exempt from that possibility. After we observed some negative verbal behavior by a guest, including using foul language in front of children, we opted out of most gatherings around the pool except for exchanging small pleasantries. Casa Martillo is designed to create a decidedly small neighborly atmosphere, and if you are lucky to have considerate neighbors, it can be a delightful place to stay. I believe our experience was probably an anomaly, since I have read and heard accounts of numerous guests who have chosen over and over to return to Casa Martillo.

My family and I are not your typical tourists, since we do not like the "all inclusive" deals in the Caribean. We do not like to be told when, where to eat or participate in activities, yet we enjoy a nice beach, so we chose to rent one of Casa Martillo's condos. The "Casa Martillo" property gives you the following: Incredible prices, cleanliness (except the little ocassional ants that are native to the island and normal, and are controlled), clean towels, a fully equiped kitchen with full size fridge and range, average sized and clean pool, friendly staff, location ( 4 blocks to two small yet comfortable beaches and great snorkeling, 3 blocks to a quiet park with a playground for children, 5 -6 blocks to small clean "loncherias", 3 blocks to a supermarket that is a major chain in Mexico with anything you need, 12 blocks south of downtwon San Miguel with all its charm and activities) and farther away from all the other tourists that allows you to sleep with the windows open and yet hear nothing!. David the owner is known by a lot of folks down there and that gets you great deals on tours and or car rentals, he will give you details, We rented a jeep with one of his friends which is one of the main American chains Budget/Bluejay and toured the island, we recommend San Gervasio (ruins), Chen-Rio a natural wadding pool for swimming with kids (this is in the East side of the island not suitable for swimming yet gorgeous to look at), Punta Sur (ecological park with a great little place for lunch at the lighthouse and a great beach for snorkeling), Mr Sancho's beach club free to get in, they jus expect that you buy a beer or lunch from them, i also did three dive trips with the dive shop at Mr. Sancho's and Abraham one of the dive masters is awesome!!!. The town San Miguel de Cozumel in general is a place with activities for all types of tourists. It was great to come back every day to Casa Martillo and find an immaculate clean room, purified water, sun chairs and a refreshing pool to jump in and a palapa to throw a steak or some fish to grill. see their website and do not hesitate to rent any of his condos!!
