“AMAZING COZUMEL ALL INCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE!!!”
Reviewed 3 January 2012

My husband and I booked our second Iberostar vacation this past october for our 5th anniversary - we were very pleased, once again, with our choice. You cannot beat it for value, fun, good variety of food, activities...and when we felt like going off the resort, we felt VERY safe. Cozumel is VERY different than mainland mexico - we rented a buggy and drove around the entire island one day, exploring little restaurants and bars, shops in main city. AMAZING experience!! And we are not even divers...just went to enjoy some relaxation on the beach, gorgeous views, and delicous mexican cuisine. bravo!!!! and the STAFF!! i could write a whole review just on them...WOW!! so friendly, fun...they really want you to have a good time. we became close with a few staff members, really wonderful people. miss our cozumel iberostar!!!!

Room Tip: we had a corner suite not too far from the beach...great location, and each room is bungalow style w...

My wife and I just returned from a wonderful vacation at the Iberostar Cozumel ( Dec 23 – Dec 30). We were a little nervous about choosing this hotel after reading some of the previous reviews, but now we can tell that we make the right decision.

STAFF:
The best part of the resort is the people; they are extremely friendly and make you fell right at home. The staff is welcoming, pleasant, fun and very attentive, always working hard to make your stay at the hotel an unforgettable experience.
Starting from the reception, Nestor did a fantastic job, he was courteous, helpful and offer us an outstanding service, always going beyond our needs.
Juan and Gaspar our bartenders at the lobby area were always very friendly and made our nights at the hotel very enjoyable and pleasant. They were always recommending us very nice drinks to try (remember, if you like shooters ask them for a “Sacrificio Maya” or a “Cucaracha” those were amazing). The staff at the pool bar were very kind and funny and ready to serve you anything that you ask for.(ask for the real Mexican Michelada)
Our waitress at the buffet for the majority of the days was Cindy, and we only have to say that she is amazing, always smiling and ready to serve you whatever you ask for. Big cheers for this lady!!!

The Animation team did a great job. They are a very hard working team that starts in the morning and continue through the day offering you a multiple variety of fun activities, talking and sharing time with the hotel guests during lunch and evening time and always doing their best to entertain you. We had a great time with Eric, Victor, Montserrat and Rafael
The animation team is also in charge of the majority of the activities for the night entertainment.(They have a great dancer at the night shows, Betty is a professional)

BEACH:
You must bring your sand shoes. The beach is very rocky. If you or your kids like to play or walk in the sand this is not the place to go.(Maybe you have to go to Playa del Carmen, no Cozumel)

Bring your Insect repellent or bug spray (we didn’t suffer of bites, but many people was bitten.)

ROOMS:
Rooms are small but ok, beds are comfortable. Mini bar is refill every two days (4 beers, 4 bottles of water, 6 pops)
Our Housekeeper did a good job. Our room was very clean, and every day she made an animal figure with the towel (it was very nice and creative)
One recommendation, if you like to drink, ask for a room in the ground floor, you don’t want to fall in the stairs.

FOOD:
The breakfast and dinner buffet at the main restaurant was good with a good variety of food. The Chef Aglae was very kind and friendly, always making sure that everything was alright. She even explain us how to make a real Mexican Taco.
The buffet at lunch time was just alright, nothing special and no many options.
The dinner of Dec 24 was spectacular, they had a great variety of food and everything looked beautiful and it was delicious too.

There are 3 reservation restaurants (Steak House, Mexican and American). We went to The Steak House and try the rib eye and the tenderloin, they were delicious. We also went to the Mexican restaurant, for this restaurant men need to wear long pants. We recommend the entree: Sopa de Tortitlla” and the main course “La arrechera”.
Make the reservation between 9:00 am to 11:00 am beside to the reception and do it the first day.

TRANSPORTATION
Cozumel doesn’t have buses. The only public service is a cab. The cost to go to the center is US$20.
Ferry to Playa del Carmen : US$13 one way. They have 2 private companies that run in different schedules, for this reason if you go to Playa don’t buy round trip, Because maybe you have to wait for the same ferry. Buy one way in Cozumel and for the return you can choose the ferry that is ready and not necessarily is the same company.

The last recommendation for the manager of hotel, although the resort is clean, there are not enough garbage bins. Please buy some of them.

We have been to Cozumel many times. But, we stay in the very northend of the island. This time we wanted to try something different. So, here is our review of the Iberostar.
First, check-in was a breeze. Cool drinks were awaiting and our room was ready within 10 minutes.
The room is kind of small, but there is enough room to store things. People talk about the beds being very hard. They are, but I like this type of mattress. So, I slept exceptionally well. The fridg is kept stocked with beer, soda, and water.
The beach is rocky. But, we enjoy snorkeling. So, we walk out onto the pier and get into the water. We were able to snorkel all the way down to the Occidental, then walk back.
All service personnel were wonderful. A big shout out to Cindy, Wilbert, and Rafael! Your smile and generosity was greatly appreciated.
The restaurants are typically all-inclusive restaurants. They are all the same. There is something for everyone. However, the coconut ice cream and churros are excellent. The buffets have a good variety. The steakhouse was very good. The Mexican restaurant was okay.
Again, we are not BIG eaters, so we can always find something to satisfy our taste.
Also, the grounds are phenomenal. We enjoyed the tropical setting of the bungalows and the wildlife area located near the bridge.
Beach towels are provided as needed.
Taxi to town is $20 US-one way.
We don't ask for much, therefore, we normally don't encounter many problems. We travel to the islands to relax and enjoy the beach. This is exactly what we expected and therefore we were above satisfied with what we received.

We stayed at the Iberostar Cozumel over Christmas. The best part of the holiday was the gala dinner they had on December 24; it was spectacular. The resort had a Christmas tree, and a Santa in a sleigh in the lobby but it was not really Christmassy looking.

We went to this resort because we tagged with some friends who had booked it, and since we love their company and all-inclusive vacations, we went with them. The IB Coz was OK, but not great. It needs refurbished and updated to keep customers that have been to better places coming here. I would think this is the "poor sister" property of their chain. I wouldn't recommend this place if you could afford to stay elsewhere.

My husband liked the beach because he liked to snorkel; I hated that you couldn't walk into the beach without sand shoes. The teens in our group walked to the next property when they wanted to go in the water; it had a small sandy area. I was the chosen one of our group of 7 to get a mass of bug bites from the sand. Definitely bring bug spray or lotion to use. I was going crazy with the itch.

I was delighted with all the service people. Rarely was there a wait for a drink with the great beach staff that served me over and over, or to get a coffee refill at the meals, the room fridge was kept stalked, and the housekeeping was efficient.

The teens played a lot of beach volleyball, and went to the disco a few times. My son and I kept comparing it to the RIU Palace we stayed at last Christmas and we both liked the RIU so much better. My husband liked the small, quaint atmosphere of the IB Coz and says he would come back, but if you like a bit of elegance - this resort is not for you.

Still, being there and not at home or at work for a week was great. I got a nice tan, enjoyed a bunch of mimosas, rum and cokes, etc. Our friends took some off site trips and had a very good time.

Absolutely great place to stay. It is quiet and does not have a lot of nightlife but the resort is so lovely and the service is top notch. We enjoyed our stay here immensely. Food was good -drinks were fabulous. Nature lovers will appreciate this piece of paradise. Wildlife everywhere and jungle like atmosphere must be seen to believe. You can snorkel right off the dock or scuba with the team. Sea life everywhere.
We don't dive but we had a great week enjoying the resort. The facilities are larger than the room count so you never have to wait anywhere. No need to reserve chairs as there are plenty everywhere. No line ups or standing room only. It is more like a boutique hotel that way. Guests are the priority here with Amazing service.
One recommendation I would make is that the coffee and cappuccino service in the lobby should start at 7am instead of 9am for the earlier risers.
Hats off to waiter Saul who gave us amazing service in the dining room every day. He always remembered what we drank and how we took our coffee. His extra touch made our vacation even better.
Entertainment team was fun but was more geared for the 20 year old guests. Easier all inclusive games would have been better - at least some of the days. Jumping over a rope while balancing on a surf board in the pool is a bit extreme. Try trivia games or more family oriented games some of the days.
The steak house is the only -'la cart worth eating at. The buffet is better the the other 2. Book steak house twice.
Shopping nights in the courtyard are fun. Lots of jewelry. Keep in mind you can talk them down to at least 50% of their asking price. I think they expect it.
For a good lobster dinner, treat yourself to Alberto's right next door -walk down the beach about 50 ft from the hotel pier.
All in all a great place to vacation. We are in our 40's and it was ideal for us. We have been to many 4-5 star resorts all over and this one is one of the best we have stayed at.

First of all .. we've been here about 1/2 doz times... one of my wife's favorites! Every time I want to try somewhere else.. she talks me into this one! :)

I've got a couple of gripes that I'll share at the end... so, here's the good

This is a calming, quiet, nice All Inclusive ( AI ). Rarely does the crowd get loud or obnoxious. Many of the guests are couples... families .. and/or divers. In fact, diving is a main focus of this hotel, but not at the expense of the average customer.

Dinners are ...... 'normal'. Nothing special. Food overall is is ok. Lets be honest.. after ... several days... without much variance... your aching to go downtown or around the island for something different.

Rooms .. are .. smaller. I've been to several other Iberostars and these are the smallest by far. But hey, who want's to sit in their room while on vacation right? Another note...the beds are HARD. I sleep like cr@p on them. I like a soft bed. If you are like me, then request a pad for the bed. It's a makeshift pad, but it helps a little bit.

Ok.... so this brings me to why I'm reviewing the hotel again. I've stated at the Paraiso Maya serveral times. At the Grand ( NICE!) .. at the Quetzal. I've stayed here six times. That is 10++ Iberostar visits in this region over the last several years.... that being said.. I expect when I walk up to the front desk... a 'flag' of some sort should pop up and they "WELCOME BACK Mr. XXXXX!!!" ... .nada. The Manager should come shake my hand and at least pretend to be glad I'm back. .... nada.. .ok.. .I'm treated like the avg person who got a cheap room off the Internet and it's their first time here..... reality...

BUT.. this time... I'm aware of their upgrades available! There are four JR Suites available on the property ($150 xtra a night list cost) that I'm shooting for so I have a bigger room. These were all taken, BUT.. the Master Suite ( there are 2 on the property ) is available. This is the room you want ( but not the cost) . Private Bedroom / Kingsize bed. Two living areas. Dining area, Private Swimming Pool, etc, etc, etc. What the hell.. it's Christmas while I'm visiting ... I love this place.. so... we go for it ( DId I mention its an EXTRA $300 list cost a night?). Yes.. this cheap AI vacation is no longer cheap ( did I mention i also dropped $850.00 between the gift shop and spa treatments?)... why is this important?

NOT ONCE did the Manger acknowledge my family's presence. NOT ONCE did anyone at the front desk.... but.. what pushed my over the edge to write this review...... They let the beer in my fridges run out ( not one fridge.. but both ). I called them .. TWICE ... and it sat empty for the last three days of my trip. Additionally, my wife doesn't drink beer . She has the bar mix the low end champagne with OJ for Mimosas.... so I asked them to put 1 or 2 of their low end Bar champagne in the fridge and the wanted to argue that I need to pay an uplift cost. My point is this. On this particular trip, I spent SERIOUS $$$$ with them.. and they wanted to argue over $10? I asked to speak to the Manager ... to no avail You know, I could get over this .. IF .. they'd at least done the minimum necessary in other areas.

I normally am cost concious. In fact, reading someone else review .... if it sounded like mine .. I'd be thinking .. "give me a break" .. but when you decide to do something over the top for your family ... and they treat you like the person that got the cheapest rate off Expedia ( using that as an example)... it just ticks me off.

But , I vote with my wallet. I voiced my opinion as I checked out. As things sit right now, I won't be back. Maybe I'll try the Allegro next door. Rumor has it you can actually walk into the water from the beach, withouht having to stumble through 10ft of coral.

Stayed two weeks from December 1 - 14. I dive with Dressel. Have no complaints. I book through Spain, decent prices. READ THE FINE PRINT as far as what happens if you are unable to make your dives.
I love the hotel. The cats, Iguanas, Armadillos are fine with me, I like the homey feel they give the place. The bird situation in the Palapa has improved vastly with an extra layer of netting, but the odd smart one still gets in.
If you are a high maintenance foodie, with germaphobia, and don't like animals then maybe this isn't the place for you. If you like to chill out, enjoy diving, sharing diving stories and pics, and have a Zen outlook you will love it there.
Re the pilfering by housekeeping staff. I have had clothing items taken in the past. This time I kept everything of value in my safe, didn't leave stuff out on the balcony over night and didn't have a problem. I think this issue could be solved by all guests refusing to tip any housekeeping staff until the problem is dealt with. Peer pressure should sort it out as this has been going on for months.
Most of the staff are wonderful.
Looking forward to my next visit.

Room Tip: If you dive you probably want to be on the dive centre side of the hotel.
