“Very good but not great”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

My husband and I stayed at this resort in the beginning of August. We have stayed all over the Caribbean and found our experience at Iberostar Cozumel to be pretty good but not exceptional, mostly because of the food and the beach. The food was average and the reservation policy for the speciality restaurants, which was extremely limiting and frustrating, had us seething until we actually tried one of the specialty restaurants and were not too impressed so we just stuck to the buffet which did not require reservations. As far as the beach, which was beautiful, getting into the water was impossible without water shoes, unless you went down the ladder from the pier.

That being said, the entertainment staff was exceptional and very fun...and the shows were GREAT and the best out of all the resorts we've been to. We appreciated all the effort the staff puts into the entertainment. Also positive were all the shady options at the pool, the cleanliness and beauty of the property, and the genuine friendliness of the rest of the staff...everyone was really nice.

Would we stay here again?? Probably not...or at least not again for a full week.

Room Tip: Rooms are old but clean...we were tucked away from pool area which probably helped with keeping thin...

Dear guest,

On behalf of all the staff at IBEROSTAR Cozumel and the Manager, we would like to thank you for providing us with your generous review.

We are delighted that you were pleased with the layout of our property and were impressed by our hardworking entertainment team, we will make sure they receive your kind words as they will surely push their motivation.

As per the comments on our gastronomy, we are saddened to read it was not of your liking. We have a main buffet for dinner where we offer a vast variety of different international dishes, with a cheese and cold snacks' station, a bread and desserts' station, a salad, fruit and vegetables' station and 3 hot stations that cook chicken, pork, beef, fish, pizzas and a large variety of recipes to offer our guests at the main buffet. We are preparing larger signs at the moment so that our guests can clearly see these sections. Thanks for your observations.

We hope to be given the opportunity of welcoming you back again at any IBEROSTAR as it would be our pleasure hosting you again.

Let me begin with the food....good. Entertainment....excellent !!! Rooms, service etc....very nice. The problem with this resort is the pier. If you plan on doing anything that requires the use of the pier (diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, parasailing, etc) and you do not do it through this resort, they will charge extra. A snorkel boat broke down with Iberostar guests on it. A fisherman went out there in his boat to bring the guests back to the pier and the "pier police" would not let him dock. She actually threw his rope back in the water unless he would pay $58.00 to let the Iberostar guests off his boat. A man in our party went deep sea fishing and had to get off the boat a half mile down the beach at the next resort because he didn't have the money to dock there. This resort has such great potential to be one of the best on the island but because they have become so greedy, they are ruining their reputation. We took a party of 19 people there (we were return guests from last year). Unless this greedy policy is changed, we will never go back. Iberostar should be ashamed !!! There is enough money to go around....stop being so greedy.

Dear client,

Thank you for choosing IBEROSTAR Cozumel once again for your vacation and for providing us with your informative review.

We get to understand that you were satisfied with our installations in general and were able to enjoy the food, entertainment and service provided.

In regard to the pier issue, please allow us to clarify the situation. Since 2011 IBEROSTAR Cozumel has had a fee for external companies to use our pier which we maintain and have permits for. This includes the company that operates in our property. Under no circumstance do we charge our guests. All dive and tour companies at the island are perfectly aware of this fee, which aims to ensure the security of our guests, since this goes accompanied by our requirement of these companies’ permits and legal paper work; so that we know they have everything in order with the local authorities and the compliance of safety regulations. We assure you IBEROSTAR Cozumel is not the only hotel that charges to use their dock to external companies. It is common practice to ensure the safety of our tourists and avoid illegal companies.

However, we will investigate the issue with the snorkel boat you just described. Thank you for that feedback.

We hope the above mentioned minor issues did not tarnish your vacation and we will be given the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.

Best regards,
Quality Manager

My hotel experience is mixed and generally disappointing. I know there is no hotel which would please everybody and options are subjective depending on personal preferences and travel experience. My is very extensive and hotel doesn’t not meet industry standards and assigned rating.
Rooms are dated, with uncomfortable mattresses, small, almost claustrophobic. Mine has noisy and unhealthy A/C, even with ear plugs I woke up in the middle of night with puffy, irritated eyes. There is no window and if you open door A/C shouts down automatically. Beach is rocky and makes impossible to use without swimming shoes, that makes pool overcrowded. Food in main buffet was average with adjusting restroom offering no water faucets and full toilets, at least during our dinner. Later I attend “movie show”: totally pathetic and amateur. Going back to room in night you have to be vigilant of wildlife, yes harmless but still can scare you by surprise.
Service at front desk extremely slow (also according to other guests) and irritating, even if you want to buy internet time stuff makes you wait with other hotel checking guests, even if they give you not working room key, to replace them you still have to wait, it’s ridiculous.
I would not recommend this property to any experience traveler. I cut my stay short, after 24 exhausting hours and moved back to Melia Cozumel which is much more superior in any way and offer true beach vacation.

Room Tip: Good luck!

Dear client,

Thank you for your review on Tripadvisor.

We are heartbroken to hear that you were not satisfied with several aspects of the hotel. Please be informed that we keep an industry standard in the firmness of our mattresses; nevertheless we also have toppers to soften them. We have also the option of leaving extra pillows and extra blankets in the rooms upon guest request. We are currently in the process of changing our mattresses, this project will be completed by the end of next year.

Regarding your A/C, we have a cleaning program in place for the air conditioning units, we are sorry that you did not report this problem during your stay as our maintenance team would have been more than happy to assist you in eliminating any discomfort.

Our beautiful property is imbedded in the natural environment which allows a lot of local wildlife. Furthermore, we located within the Cozumel Marine Park which gives our guests the opportunity of having a coral reef right in front of the hotel. This environment prohibits any kind of modification to its natural form, therefore the entrance to the water is rocky. This allows a wonderful array of marine life to live within. To facilitate the entrance into the water for our valued guests, we provide a pier.

Please accept our apologies for the unsatisfactory experience you had with us, we hope we are given the opportunity to welcome you back to any IBEROSTAR in the world in the future to prove to you our commitment to excellent customer service.

We stayed at the Iberostar Cozumel 8/1-8/8 of 2014. The grounds with the mature tropical landscape was beautiful! The pink flamingos and iguanas added to the ambience and it was all well kept. The beach was terrific and the snorkeling off the pier was amazing and convenient. The staff was always friendly and service as good as any I've had. The room was always clean. The food was lacking in my mind, as compared to other resorts we've stayed at but we certainly didn't starve. We stayed in room 1103 which is closest to the beach has the best water view. The only drawback there was the large amount of people several times a day getting ready for the diving and the loud clinking air tank cart going back and forth to the boats numerous times. The drinks were disappointing for the most part as they use cheap liquor and not much of it. The pool bar seemed to be the best and we met a lot of terrific fun people. The coordinated activities in the pool were extremely loud though and twice a day can be heard across the entire resort. the mic needed to be turned down, as it was very hard to relax on the beach during those times. Probably wouldn't go back as a couple for a getaway but will definitely return with the family. Oh, and the Scuba diving was close and amazing! I highly recommend 'dive with Martin' divers. Small company with native guides and no more than 6-8 people per boat.

Was at Iberostar Cozumel from July 28th thru Aug 2nd with my wife and 17 year old son. Had a wonderful time and would stay there again. Like anyplace, there is good and bad and everyone's perspective is different. Pluses: beautiful grounds - like being in the jungle, nice hotel, Lots of food and drink. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Entertainment was good, not great. Lots of activities around the pool. Price was right! Minuses: Room small with little storage but cute and functional. Beach was nice but the water had about 100 feet of rocks covered in moss so very slippery. Restaurants not air conditioned and for the most part meals are at the buffet. They only let you go to the nice restaraunts twice for a weekly stay unless they have room after 1:00. Other bad thing is the late snacks are leftovers from dinner buffet. They should have someone making fresh hamburgers and pizza instead of serving leftovers that has been sitting for a few hours. All in all we had a great time and I would stay there again.

IN SHORT a great resort on a great island in a wonderful country of wonderful people. One week after returning, my family of four is still buzzing with joy. I don't agree that it is a divers resort only, but if you do dive, it's as good as it gets.

IN DETAIL
Our family is fortunate enough to have enjoyed time in Beaches in Jamaica and the Iberostar in Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic. So we know the all-inclusive formula. After very much enjoying the Iberostar experience for the first time in the Dominican Republic last year, we were happy to visit the Iberostar in Cozumel. We planned to dive every other day, over two weeks, but ended up doing more than that. I will cover:
- hints
- getting there, including from Cancun to Cozumel
- the staff
- the location, rooms and grounds
- the beach and diving
- the entertainment and food
- two excursions
- what I would change

HINTS
- you need only USA dollars (for taxi) and a credit card for almost everything else
- you should not need bug spray for the room but if you feel you do, take it with you as the hotel shop does not sell it
- Cozumel in July/August is hot and humid, but you get used to it
- if you are going to dive, book in advance to get great prices
- Take beach shoes if you want to wade out to take a Hobie Cat or Kayak

GETTING THERE
If you land on Cozumel, taxis offer a published fixed price. The Iberostar is $20 (USA) 15-20 minute drive from where the ferry from Playa Del Carmen docks. The airport journey is a little longer. We came via Cancun and had an easy and affordable transfer with no prior arrangements.
1) take the airport bus "ADO" from Cancun airport to Playa Del Carmen port. After you exit the customs area, the last desk on the left, where rental car businesses are also based, will be marked "ADO". Buy your ticket there. This service is run by the airport and costs around $12-14 for a one hour trip. The route is direct on smooth straight roads and it only stops once on the way. The bus is new, with huge seats and nicely air conditioned. It's a great service and 4-6 times cheaper than taking a shared minivan.

2) After arriving in Playa Del Carmen, relative to the way the bus is facing when parked, go about two blocks to the right, then one to the left and you'll see the ferry pier and sea. This easy walk takes around five minutes maximum.
3) As you approach the pier, you see two ferry companies, one left, one right. A large sign on each says when the next sailing is. The two companies alternate, one each hour, so choose the next departure. You will leave checked luggage (no charge) with the crew as you board and collect it at the other end from the carousel. The journey takes about 45 minutes and is calm. Don't worry if the queue looks huge. Everyone fits. You can sit inside, in air con, or outside.
4) When you arrive, collect your bags from the carousel, walk to the end of the pier and on the left you will be guided to a taxi and whisked to the Iberostar. There are plentiful taxis. No need to rush.

THE RESORT STAFF
All the staff, from receptionist to gardeners to hard working maids to bar staff to waiters were very friendly and helpful. I send Senor Rudolpho, in the restaurants, a special thank you from my family for his wonderful professional, efficient and friendly assistance during our stay. Sorry we missed you on our departure day. Some reviewers have said you need to tip as you go to get good service. Not true. A please and thank you will suffice. More on that later.

LOCATION, ROOMS AND GROUNDS
The Iberostar is the last major resort on the south west, well out of town, and a modest size like in Dominican Republic. It's big enough to have everything you need. It's small enough that you get to know staff and other guests. The result is that the resort is quite isolated, bringing extra peace and tranquility. We liked that. You don't get hassled on the beach. If you want town life, take the taxi into town. The resort is a beautiful green wildlife park (mentioned by other reviews so I will not dwell on that). The gardeners are constantly at work and there was equally constant resort maintenance, painting and replacing paths - all well looked after. Just walking around was an enjoyable part of the vacation. The rooms were arranged in a village style format and getting around was easy. I didn't hear any noise apart from the peacocks. Room size was perfectly acceptable, and the fans and air con (which we switched off at night) kept us cool and happy. Maid room service was impeccable and friendly, with wonderful towel decorations every day, the best we've seen. Two good sized pools are separated by a swim up bar. As others have said, the pools are perfect in morning and late in the day, before 7pm closure, but positively hot in the afternoon. You get used to it and it certainly didn't put me off. The sea is warm but just right if you find the pool hot. Facts: after a thunderstorm and long downpour (but only one in two weeks) the pool dropped(!) to 32 degrees centigrade. Sea was a constant 29-30 degrees centigrade.

BEACH AND DIVING
What was coral starts right where the sand stops. So yes it is a wonderful, tree-lined sandy beach, heaven in fact, until you reach the water line. No problem if you want to swim. Walk down the short pier and take the short ladder into sea. You can stand or swim there. It's great. There is a buoyed swimming area. I would not say this was a snorkeling area. You can put on your snorkel and see very many fish under the pier, attracted by guests that feed them, but the rest of the area is isn't what I would call snorkeling territory and it certainly is not a house reef. I would not swim out far from the pier due to passing boats and sea currents (not noticeable by the pier, don't worry). Note: other resorts between the Iberostar and the ferry port did have sandy beaches and large inflatable water toys, but we never felt we missed out on a sandy ocean.

The Hobie Cat sailing boats at the beach are in wonderful condition, great job Dressel, and a joy to sail. Winds vary from light to a good blast. Kayaks are good too. The sea is always calm and the colours you experience are to die for. Just beautiful and where else can you be sailing along and see a turtle pop up right next to you? It happened to me. Yes you pay a $2 daily fee to use the water sports, but this goes towards the island's marine park fund. It's this arrangement that prevents fishing and other reef damage. And it works well. If you dive, your payment covers sailing and kayaks for the day too.

On diving, I'd experienced Dressel Divers elsewhere in the past but not onsite at Iberostar Cozumel, and was not overly impressed by that past experience. Not so at Cozumel. Dressel Divers Cozumel are a great bunch, really well organised and with excellent management, office staff (but what a view!), and wonderful international collection of dive leaders and instructors. My Cozumel experience moves Dressel to joint #1 alongside Emperor in the Red Sea and this is a huge compliment to the crew in Cozumel. Fantastic job guys - we really appreciate the way you took care of us, especially Jake and Fernando on land. Jake, huge thanks and appreciation for your special attention. In the water, I really appreciated the most excellent Juan Carlos (we love you!) and Marina (we love you too!). We spent most time under the guidance of Juan Carlos. There could be no better experience as Juan Carlos dived every dive with the passion of someone new to the resort. Thanks JC for making our two weeks with you two weeks that we will talk about for years to come . More on diving in a separate Tripadvisor review of Dressel.... The diving was right on the doorstep, meaning you could dive twice in a morning and be back for lunch, or dive twice in the afternoon and be back for plenty of pool time before sunset. In the water, huge fish, turtles (too many to count), lobsters, sharks (friendly variety) and thousand other things. Boats were the perfect size. Yes, occasionally three groups shared a boat but it was never overcrowded and we split into three modest groups before entering the water. It never felt busy or crowded or rushed. Just great, safe, well organised diving. Top marks to Dressel for a winning formula for their clients and the greatest respect for the reefs.

ENTERTAINMENT AND FOOD
Hola Senorita Patricia, my favourite in the entertainment team and a great dancer in the shows. There's plenty going on organised by the Start Friends crew in the day and the evening shows were of a wonderful quality. The 9.30pm start was a little late if you'd had a lot of sun and sea in the day, but well worth attending in the large theatre. I will contradict others who have said the shows were amateur, apart from Karaoke night. The cabaret was amazing. Other shows really did entertain and the dancing and acrobatics were of a very high standard, by men and women Star Friends alike. Food and drink were plentiful wherever you are in the resort. Drinks were quite varied, and strong. Most nights you could sit by the bar in the large reception area and be entertained by a singer - guitar combination whom entertained the guests well. The buffet restaurant had theme nights but there was so much on offer every night that I was always happy to eat there. We also tried the Mexican, Steak and American restaurants, all of which we enjoyed. Quality was good - we loved it all.

EXCURSIONS
1. We took the round-the-island buggy tour, joining a large convoy blasting around the coast from nature park to crocodiles to snorkeling to lighthouse to lunch to Mayan ruins tour to learning all about tequila and then trying it. Our vehicle was an 800cc Polaris that looked like it came from the set of the movie Mad Max. It managed up to 50 mph with no windscreen. We loved it and the tours. Recommended and good value. Your buggy will be outside the hotel. No travel needed to join the tour.
2. Snorkel with whale sharks. Organised by Dressel. Not cheap but very well organised and worth every penny. You go back to the mainland then take a bus then a high speed boat ride to the middle of nowhere where you'll find many whale sharks. Jump in, with a guide, and swim alongside them for as long as you can keep up. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to swim with the biggest fish in the world. It was magic. Bring your waterproof camera.

WHAT I WOULD CHANGE
1. If I were the resort manager, I would change some of the guests. To many, the norm was to go to a bar and state "two beers, a pina colada, a coke". Call me old fashioned but the very hard working and cheery staff deserve at least a "hello, good afternoon, please and thank you". Try it: Hola. Buenas tardes. Por favor. Gracias. I don't speak Spanish but I can manage some good manners. And to the guests that think it is acceptable to smoke in the pool and use the side of the pool as an ash tray, or worse, the water, think again next time. Yuk.
2. A very small point in these times of challenged economies. The Iberostar in Dominican Republic managed to award an occasional t-shirt to winners of the Star Friends activities. This was a nice touch. If the Iberostar Cozumel has insufficient budget, I do understand but wonder if perhaps award winning children could be awarded some memento beyond a certificate. Just a small suggestion and I do appreciate that medals were given on some nights for kids to keep.
3. The opportunity to experience Mexican food was slightly limited given that we were in Mexico. Is there a chance to expand the menu in the Mexican a la carte restaurant?
4. As per Iberostar policy elsewhere, WiFi is chargeable but the charges are, in my opinion and experience, well beyond reasonable. Perhaps it was good to be offline for vacation. On the other hand, some access would have been useful. Please lower your WiFi price to a reasonable rate.

All-in-all two wonderful weeks in heaven on earth. The Iberostar Cozumel is very well managed throughout, like Dressel Divers. If I were the manager, I'd be very pleased to know that my team really is taking great care of the guests. We look forward to returning in future to do it all over again. Adios amigos in Iberostar Cozumel. Adios amigos in Dressel Divers Cozumel.

Room Tip: Whether you are at the reception end, or by the beach, it doesn't take long to go from one end t...

Iberostar- where peacocks, iguanas, pink flamingos, turtles and cats roam free. If you are not into this, this is not the place for you. But if you are you will love it. Don't forget the bug spray.

We loved the experience of being in the middle of a jungle like setting. It is not your average cookie cutter hotel with a common hallway. Some rooms are on one level some two. Very
private, quiet.

The staff is top notch. The nicest people you will ever meet. There is food available up to 2am.

If you have kids, they keep them entertained. If your like us and don't have kids there is still pleanty to do.

The drawbacks are the men have to have sleeved shirts on whenever you dine. There are three restaurants, you need mandatory reservations and you can only make reservations for two of the restaurants. We didn't eat at any of the three restaurants, the buffet had pleanty of variety.

Make sure you bring aqua shoes. It is a coral reef and getting to the water is a bit of a challenge. Or you can just walk to the pier and jump in no big. Pleanty of fish to see. The water is as warm as a bath and waist high.

Just a couple of steps down the beach is Albertos. Great people, great food. They have
live bands.

But make sure you take a day or two to rent a car to visit the island. Very easy to drive there one road goes all the way around. See the Myan ruins and visit the other side of the island.

It is the beauty of the island and the hospitality of the people that keep us comoing back to
