“Beautiful Sunsets”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2014

This is the 2nd time we have visited this resort and love it. Check in is always slow, but once you are in, all is great. We had a fantastic room with an ocean view, right over the Pizzeria - very spacious, clean and well maintained. Fridge was stocked daily, leaving us plenty of bottled water - I tipped $5 daily with a $10 mid-week tip - found cute towel animals on our bed every day. We had a hot tub on the balcony, did not use but did sit out and watch the sunsets. Portofino's was great the first night, it was a sit down dinner - order one of each as the portions are small but perfect if you are wanting to keep your calories in check..favorite waiter was Marco, always ready to please and make sure we were taken care of. Best breakfast is at the Seaside Grill - smaller menu but good selection. This restaurant also serves the best burgers for lunch...The beach bar was close to our room and we could hangout on the beach and be served in our lounge chairs, perfect...Miguel is a fantastic bartender, always offering a great special of the day. We went into town a couple of times for dinner, Woody's is great, had live music. The Lobster House is a must, excellent lobster and margarita's.. If you are there long enough recommend taking the ferry to Playa Del Carmen and having meal/drinks at Senor Frogs - great atmosphere, guaranteed a good time. To avoid wait times for meals, go early - we never had to wait except for pizza, but we just enjoyed talking and laughing with our friends so the time passed quickly and we were visited by an Iguana - that made the wait time worth it.

Room Tip: Rooms over the Pizzaria and the rooms around the pool near the Pizzaria are great, spacious with sit...

We stayed in a newer section of the hotel close to the Portofino restaurant and with the rectangular pool right in front of our unit. Pool was nice and deep at deep end, but still had wading area at shallow end. Our ground floor unit was clean with a king size bed and security safe, the AC worked fine, daily housekeeping was good, but the phone did not work to call the front desk. If you hear a click, click, click at night in your room, it will be a small gecko looking for bugs, nothing to get excited about, they won't bother you. We were part of a large diving group and were well accommodated at the restaurants or buffets when we wanted to sit together. On our last night we were invited to eat at the next door Secrets restaurant. Food was good, with plenty of selection at the buffets, and the drinks (margaritas) were also good. Wait staff at the restaurants were excellent. The iguanas are entertainment at the Portofino restaurant if you sit at the outside railing overlooking a rocky coral beachfront. There is also a long sandy beach and dock. The Dive House dive shop is quickly accessed right outside of the Portofino restaurant where we ate most meals, but there is also a pizza restaurant nearby and closer to the main pool there are two more restaurants plus the main bar overlooking the sandy beach. Plenty of choice. There is also a gym onsite. Hotel location is closer to most dive sites at the southern end of the island, far enough away from the cruise ship crowd, but does require a taxi ride to get to the main town square area. The only real compliant we had was they never had ice cream at the restaurants and did not even have ice cream bars at the small bodega!

Room Tip: If you are diving thru the Dive House, get a unit closer to that end.

We stayed at Sunscape Sabor for nine days. We came here for diving so I will give you positives and negatives.

Positives:
Absolutely amazing diving! My husband and I did 15 dives while we were here through Dive House and they were great. Very friendly and very helpful!
The beach at the resort was nice for snorkeling.
The staff was very welcoming and nice! Yussel was our favorite :)
Our room was huge and usually cleaned very well. It was a junior suite.
The pizza there was delicious!

Negatives:
Food-
The food was not the greatest. I am not a picky eater by any means and I did go hungry at times. The resort is very understaffed and has moved their main big buffet place to be a part of their other resort next door. So instead of making a new area for Sabor guests, they have made their once Italian restaurant the buffet. They say they serve Italian food for dinner but when we went there I saw only one pasta dish and that was it. The breakfast wasn't the greatest, and breakfast is really important since we dove every morning. I found myself eating the exact same thing for 9 days straight.
Every other day they will now clear out the pool area and put up a buffet for dinner...This was every other day and really your only choice for eating dinner that day. They served the same food every other day. After being there so long, it kind of gets old.
The Mexican restaurant, El Patio, was not very good and once again very understaffed. It took us over three hours to eat and we didn't even eat dessert because it was 11 o clock
. The food didn't taste very good either. :(

Drinks- They say they stock the fridge in your room every day but ours was stocked only a few times. And since we are on the way other side of the resort, we didn't want to walk to the bar to get a drink!

Room service- it would take 45 minutes to an hour to get room service.

Jacuzzi- our suite came with a jacuzzi outside that was cracked on the bottom and leaked. We called and stopped multiple staff members who said it would get fixed and never did. The person below us complained because water would be dripping in their deck area. We still used it though and it was very nice. Just needs some TLC.

WiFi- they charged you to use their wifi here. 40 bucks for 7 days! I'm already paying to stay here, I wish that would have been included.

I still had an absolute awesome vacation and I know you will too. The only thing that really needs to be improved is food and having more workers. We tried to go downtown or go somewhere for dinner when we knew the buffet would be coming out. I recommend going to a restaurant called The Mission. It was the best Mexican food I've ever had! You can rent a jeep for 60 dollars for the whole day and you can do your own exploring too! We also went to Chankanaab and swam with dolphins and manatees.

Don't forget to tip also. They seem to treat you better if you do :)

And if you aren't planning on it yet, go scuba diving!

We have been to Sabor a couple of times, which is a good recommendation in itself. We are in Coz to dive so we don't hang around the resort most of the day. The rooms were clean but not fancy. AC worked, towels and sheets got changed out, they even restocked the mini-fridge. Shower was only tepid at times. They charged for WIFI by the device! Really? Who does this anymore? 40 bucks per device per week. The food was good as was the bar service. The only complaint was slow service and tiny, tiny portions. My appetizer was 1 wing, 1/8 of an empanada and a chip with beans. Mozzarella salad was one ball of cheese a playing card size leaf of lettuce and maybe 2 cherry tomatoes. It was good, but come on, serve it up! The pool grill saved us. That is a good burger. Good stay, good hotel, be ready for the food. Superior bar service. We dove, ate and drank on the beach till we feel asleep. Relax, its Mexico!

Room Tip: you want ocean view, close to the main pool. less walking

We as a group have taken 9 trips together in the past 9 years, and this one was one of our best so far. The room was very nice, clean, and had everything we needed. The food was good and had good variety. We had a room on the ground floor right next to the adult pool, so we had great access to both the pool and the beach. And we didn't have to listen to a bunch of screaming and wining kids all day. The beach was amazing. A bit rocky in some spots, but no big deal. The volleyball court could use some more sand on it, but it was still great to use. We were there in the winter of 2013, so their new buffet was still under construction, but we hear that it is excellent. Overall an excellent resort for the price.

Room Tip: We had a ground floor room right next to the adult pool, so we had great access to both the pool and...

Friendly, hardworking staff - must give them props. We felt so bad for them, as they had to apologize to everyone all the time. Definitely understaffed, which affected everything. Our room was clean and comfortable, and our refrigerator was well stocked.

Something is going on with the corporation who runs the resort, and it will affect future business. The corporation decided to cut corners in all the wrong places. Watered down drinks (unanimous in conversations with other guests), and that must come from the corporations.

Do the membership talk - 90 minute talk gave us two excellent excursions. Stay here as apposed to Secrets which was soooooo depressing when we visited. We kept mocking Secrets by whispering,"Secrets."

A coffee bar (we couldn't even get coffee with dessert) and fresh salsa would have won us over, and it would have made us forget all of Sunscape Sabor's shortcomings.

Excellent entertainment, and nice World Cup set up.

Room Tip: Request third floor.

This resort has really gone downhill in the past year. When we booked we clearly booked 2 beds. We were given a bed and a pull out couch that sunk in and had a 1 inch pad on metal framing . They didn't even give us sheets for it. We had 4 people but never got 4 clean towels had to bring back beach towels. The floors were filthy . We had a tarantula in our sink one morning.
None of this would have bothered me as much but they closed one if the big restaurants from last year ( it is now for Secrets next door). We had lines every morning for breakfast sometimes 30 mins and then wait another 20 min in line for an omelette. That was the only decent breakfast food this year . No Mexican hot chocolate this year which was my favorite . Lunch was a joke nothing even remotely good to eat. Salad but only 1 dressing choice usually thousand island . Ended up eating fries and cheese quesadillas all week. Dinner was even worse. Took an average 1 1/2 hours to eat at El Patio not including wait to be seated. So understaffed. Almost every night is some buffet with all the other restaurants closed . Cold food that looked and tasted bland and nasty .
Entertainment crew was better this year than last . Santana was a lot of fun. Loved water aerobics and crafts. When they advertise a teen club it shouldn't be locked all the time !
The beach is great that was again our favorite part. But not sure that is enough.
A big shout out to Julio at the Sea Side Grill he was awesome last year and continues to be the shining star at this resort! You rock! Hardest working and friendliest worker at this resort .
Not horrible but going downhill fast.
