“Beautiful resort”
Reviewed 26 February 2014 via mobile

Went there Valentines week, had a blast. So much to do. Very clean rooms and surroundings. The swim up bars were awesome. Loved the beach area for swim and snorkel. Everyone was real helpful and made our vacation great. Only thing was pay for internet, fix that and you are 5 star.

We went to Park Royal for our belated honeymoon in Feb/Mar of 2008 (there is no option to date this back that far, hence the March 2013 date) and couldn't have chosen a better place. Three a la carte restaurants were hard to get into but completely worth it. Ate conch for the first time there -- oh lord, what a heavenly treat for your palate! The room... so comfortable, nice little balcony, cool marble floors, comfortable beds, AMAZING overhead (rainfall like) shower and rich, classy shower stall. Bottled water replaced daily was a nice touch. We left a tip for the housekeeper once and came back to a cool elephant on the bed made out of the towels. The drinks were great, the bartenders fun, the wait staff efficient, the place was clean, always something to do, Mariachi band on our first night made me cry. It was all so perfect -- we really needed to get away and I can't tell you how happy I am we chose Park Royal and Cozumel for that getaway.

Went snorkeling, avoided (for the most part) the time share approaches. Rented a car and took a trip around the island in a broken down VW beetle (it was a BLAST!) and rode horses in the jungle. We only really went out to eat once and it wasn't as good as the resort food at all. Walked to downtown, but taking a cab is only five american dollars so we cabbed the next time. Beach is nice, especially at night with the stars... the shows were well done and sometimes even interactive. Activities during the day were great. There were children there when we went but we didn't notice them often as they have their own activities or around much at night.

At one point in the Italian a la carte restaurant, our waiter turned to my husband and said "You have a very beautiful wife". Oh boy, I melted and blushed. How romantic and wonderful.

There are not enough adjectives to tell you how we loved this place. I hope we can go back some day.

Room Tip: Avoid the first floor -- its a tropical area and there is a lot in the way of plants, etc right outs...

WARNING: Stay away from the salespeople. The front desk told us our room was not ready and gave this to one of the sales people. They start out by telling you all about the hotel and what there is to do around the area. Don't fall for any of it. Go across the street from the hotel (it's just a little stand) you can get much cheaper prices and you can bargain with them. The hotel wanted to charge us 240.00 for a Jeep/Snorkel/Lunch/Tequila tour for 2 but we got it for 170.00. It was well worth it.

Props of this property:
*Value
*Cleanlines
*Lot of activities
*Safe in room ($)
*Safe place.
*Each room has its own balcony.
*Never a wait to get into the buffet.
*Taxi's are available outside the hotel anytime you need one.
*The hotel has it's own shopping plaza.
*It was neat seeing the cruise ships right there when you got up.

Cons:
1) SALES PEOPLE

2) You have to get in line at 11:30am to get reservations for one of the two specalty restaurants.

3) Not much of a beach area. But you can get snorkeling gear free for 1 hour a day.

4) The Buffets are ran very well, it just seems to be pretty much the samething food day in and day out.

5) Warning: Their pools are not heated so watch going in the early months of the year. (It was cold). There is NO heat in the jacuzzi either.

6) We never had much of a warm shower either.

7) We had to get our room key reprogram 3 times. (it was getting old, FAST)

8) We stayed on the second floor (Rm2210) Here you get the noise from the pool plus the noise from the theatre (at night)

9) The drinks seem to be very watered down.

10) This property it not good for people who may have trouble walking or climbing stairs. There is uneven stone walkways though out this property, so be prepared.

I stayed here a few years back for a very special trip ...

The service was excellent ... the facilities were excellent ... the Pool Areas were luxurious and the costs posted in the lobby seemed reasonable. It is off the main strip where the cruise ships come into Downtown Cozumel ... which is a definite plus.

Plus when we brought back a Dorado (Mahi Mahi) from a charter fishing trip they happily prepared it in the otherwise all-inclusive buffet where there is normally no menu to choose from ... just the buffet.

There are also two restaurants where you can reserve one is Italian and the other Mexican ... good place.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the Gulf of Mexico with a balcony.

We had a great week. I'll start with commenting on all the negative reviews that I read prior to going: Yes, the beach is small BUT the snorkeling was great! If you want a big expansive beach - don't go here. Yes, the natural coral walkways are uneven - they were fine for flip flops! Yes, the WIFI is $15/day, know it, deal with it. And yes the time share sales guys & gals are in the lobby as concierges - we just ignored them and they ignored us, perfect. Now for my review: The resort was extremely clean. Staff were friendly. Food and drinks were yummy. I am a celiac and found the food naturally gluten free friendly. The soft tortillas were made with 100% corn flour and were offered at every meal. The a la cartes were very good and much better than any other all inclusive resort we have been. The main buffet had outdoor seating that I enjoyed. We did sit inside twice and it almost felt like you were outside as the walls are floor to ceiling glass. We noticed just before we were about to book the trip that the highway runs between the resort & pool and the beach. It does, but no need to worry, you never notice it while you are there. The landscaping is so full and lush and the design of the hotel and grounds really makes the highway disappear. The resort has lots of shady places to sit and relax by the pool or the ocean. A big plus, we were always able to get lawn chairs by the ocean in the sun or shade at 9:30 or 10:00am. The infinity pools by the ocean are gorgeous! In addition to the huge cruise ships that dock near the resort, there is lots of boat traffic to watch if you choose to sit by the ocean. The only negative I have with the resort is the lack of seating areas in the lobby areas. In the evenings, there is an open air lobby bar but very limited seating. We saw many groups of people standing around. There is lots of space, just need more seats. It seems a shame that the bar by the ocean isn't open in the evening as it is beautiful there at night. A special thanks to Pablo at the front desk. We had a great trip!

Room Tip: High floors for view.

After staying a few different places in Mexico it is worth noting that not all resorts, especially all-exclusives, are the same.
First and most noticeable the resort as a whole is very clean, the staff do an outstanding job of keeping everything from ash trays to walkways looking as they would in the brochure. The pools are very refreshing however i would recommend getting to the pool/ beach chairs before 9am to get prime selection. Every seat by the pool decks has a view of the cruise ships that look as if you could take a quick swim out to them.
Unlike other Mexican resorts that seem as though the bars never close the pool bar doesn't open until 10am and the others not until 11am so no early morning cocktails to heal the hangovers.
The restaurants are not 5 star but they are close. Both Italian and Mexican fin dining are incredible. But you need to be in line at 11:30am to beat the rush to get a reservation. I recommend bringing a drink with you and arranging for another to be delivered after 15 or so minutes as the sun is hot an heavy. You will make friends in line so maybe bring two at a time! The Buffet has plenty of selection and like most things at the Park Royal if you ask for it, the staff will make it happen (Bacon)!
The rooms are a good size and very well kept. House keeping staff are friendly and if you tip a few bucks every day they will leave something special on the bed after they are made. Also, keep in mind that you have to leave the room key in the holder on the wall for the lights to stay on.
Bartenders/ host/ restaurant staff are constantly moving. Tip them well as they are always ready to make a frozen drink, rearrange some tables and provided an extra bowl of soup if you wish.

Entertainment team is fun and well organized. They are quick to give yo a nickname and carry it on through out your stay. From yoga in the morning be the pool to crazy games they can keep you active if lounging isn't for you.

We traveled with all adults so our time was spent in the pool/ocean and relaxing with adult beverages.

Room Tip: Every room has a view. Can't go wrong with room above 4th floor for best views of the Cruise shi...

Over all we were very pleased with this resort. There are a few things to consider...the wifi is NOT free if you are not a club member. Per day it is $15. To use the fitness room there is also a charge per day/per use. The two restaurants that take reservations fill up FAST. You have to wait in line starting at 11:45 for when the open at noon. You are standing in the HOT sun for 45 minutes. The Italian side wasn't the greatest. The Mexican side was AWESOME. Early am before 6 the loungers fill up so the night before when you turn in your used towel request a new one so you have it to put on the loungers to save the next day. Bring your own drinking mug, bigger. They serve in in a 8 oz plastic cup. If you tip during the day the bartenders are faster with their service. The only bar that opens early, 10am is the pool bar and there is usually a line and only 1 bartender. The hotel/lobby areas are very clean. The staff was very friendly and willing to help. Not much of a night life if you are there with couples and looking for something to do after 9. Actually there is no night life. The Sports Bar was never full or had over 5 people in it.
