“Would definitely go back!”
Reviewed 17 July 2007

We booked a package on site 59 to Cozumel, selecting the Casa Mexicana. The hotel was spotless and they had the hardest working staff I have ever seen. All of the staff, from the front desk to the concierge to the waiter and even the maids and the young boys constantly mopping the tile floors, were extremely friendly and approachable, and most were very fluent in English. Angel gave us a great restaurant recommendation, too--La Conchita del Caribe-best ceviche ever. After a day of snorkeling, we would stumble past all the annoying vendors, when we would see the escalator going to the lobby and it was a haven of tranquillity. The hotel is right downtown, so there is some noise, but it is tolerable. Someone nearby owns a little yappy dog, but it mainly barked in the daytime. The pool is small but actually perfect for relaxing and reading--and the lanai shades part of it nicely. The breakfast buffet was unbelievable--it was so good we never ate lunch the whole trip. I would much rather do that than an all inclusive, since we wanted to try other places for dinner anyway. The beds are a bit hard, but I understand that is pretty common in Mexico, and it only started to bother me after the first five nights or so. There is no beach immediately nearby, since the hotel is across from the port where cruise ships dock (hence the annoying salespeople on the streets). But the cab lobby is very strong there, and they are everywhere so you can always get to the park or beaches. We rented a car and were glad we did, since it was so easy to get around to explore different places to snorkel, and you could park in the lot across the street for free. I loved it and will definitely go back (hopefully learn to scuba in the interim!)

  • Liked — welcoming staff, breakfast buffet, cleanliness
  • Disliked — view was not that great, but we knew we weren't getting an ocean view so it was okay.

La Casa Mexicana is a perfectly adequate hotel for singles and couples seeking good value, reasonable comfort, a prime location downtown, and a lovely breakfast buffet in an 'al fresco' setting.

The room rack rates are somewhat negotiable with the hotel directly and may be occasionally offered at a discount on internet travel websites.

The hotel is accessible by escalator from the busy sidewalk below filled with many cruise boat passengers by day. Upon arriving at the second level, one walks into the lobby which is tranquil and seemingly removed from the hustle and bustle below. There is, as others have noted, a modest little pool for refreshing (but certainly not swimming), a small bar with a few stools, and myriad deck chairs scattered about for relaxation adjacent to the reception area, and a small air conditioned salon with complimentary computers nearby.

The rooms are fairly large but sparsely furnished. The air conditioner works well and is not too loud. The bed is firm with plenty of pillows. The bathroom is minimally sized with some toiletries, good water pressure in the combo bath/tub, and clean, soft, large white towels and washcloths. There is a room safe. The room is clean; maidservice does a good job; yes, the maids make cute little pets out of towels....

The excellent breakfast buffet is served around the corner from the reception desk in an enclosed but open atrium area with a lovely tropical garden. If you happen to have a room facing the breakfast atrium, expect to hear the clinging and clanging of pots and pans and ice and the like as the hardworking employees dutifully set up the breakfast buffet each morning.

If you are a scuba diver, check out Aldora Divers one block north for personalized service, small passenger loads and longgggg underwater times with steel 120 tanks at optimal diving sites.

For reliable local food, consider Restaurant Denis just off the Plaza San Miguel about 6-8 blocks to the north and a couple of blocks inland. On Sundays, there is a festival in this plaza as well.

Adios for now amigos.

When we first got there the first two rooms smelled liked mold so bad that they moved us for the third time. My mother in laws eyes swelled from the mold in the ducts. The hotel management we're completely rude and acted like they didn't understand us whenever we complained. The breakfast was gross. The food setting out was cold (food poision alert). The last night we went to the Melia (night and day diffrence) Of course we loved the Melia. Casa Mexicana refused to refund our money for our 2 rooms on our last hotel night even though we didn't stay there. I picked this hotel because of the good reviews and boy was I dissappointed! I recomend DON"T even try this hotel!!!! You'll be sorry ...I was.

Casa Mexicana was amazing and one of the huge reasons our vacation was great. The service was amazing, the breakfast buffet was divine, the hotel rooms were extremely comfortable. I would recommend getting an ocean view room just because the view IS so gorgeous. The hotel location is great. You are right in the middle of downtown, but when you take an escalator up from the busy streets into the quiet calm lobby, you forget you are in the middle of busyness. The concierce was extremely nice and helpful. The cable TV selection was great. They had free broadband internet, just make sure to ask for the cable. They also let us borrow towels for our daily excursions. Also, they provided great discounts to the hottest restaurants in the area.

  • Liked — The people who worked there and the services provided.
  • Disliked — The other customers; apparently the people next door were lame and went to bed at 9pm and complained of my room being "too loud."

We just spent 8 nights at the Casa Mexicana and thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The pool is extremely small and went unused by us, but we planned on swimming in the ocean anyway. Breakfast each day included tasty natural juice, fresh fruits, bacon, yogurt drinks, omelettes, hotcakes, and other good choices. Staff members were friendly, helpful, and very kind. The hotel is quiet, beds are comfortable, and we had zero problems there. While this hotel may not suit the needs of some travelers, it was perfect for us. Our travel plans included eating breakfast in the hotel each day and then going to the beach, on a tour, or to Playa del Carmen, and returning in the evening. This hotel does not serve lunch and dinner which gives you great opportunity to try the local restaurants. We enjoyed our stay there and recommend it to others who don't plan on hanging out at the hotel all day.

We just came back from our first trip to Cozumel. We did lots of research and decided to stay at Casa Mexicana instead of one of the bigger, all-inclusive hotels. Our goal was to experience the real Mexico. And we got exactly that! I will break up my review into 3 sections, hotel, the island, and excursions.

Casa Mexicana: this place has to be one of my favorite hotels ever (I’ve been to lots of places: all over US, Jamaica, Hawaii, Europe, etc). It is a small, charming, and VERY clean place. It is tastefully decorated and looks very modern. But my favorite thing about it was the warm atmosphere. The staff were wonderful. The concierge, Mayte, is absolutely wonderful. She will answer any questions, give you recipes, book excursions, advise on dining, etc. The free breakfast buffet is out of this world. It includes a made-to-order omelet\egg station, fruit bar, gourmet cheeses and lox, Mexican and American dishes, fresh squeezed juices, and more. I would have been very happy with it even it hadn’t been free. However, this hotel doesn’t have the large resort amenities, like spa, gym, pool (is very small), etc. If you are looking for a resort experience this place is not for you. If you are looking for an authentic, clean, warm place in the heart of San Miguel, Casa Mexicana is it.

Cozumel, the island: I would describe the island as the Hawaii of Mexico. The island has beautiful beaches (be sure to venture out to the East side, the beaches are even prettier there), wonderfully friendly locals, lots of stuff to do, and a unique culture. Keep in mind that if you’re staying in San Miguel, you will not have a beach, the closest one is about 3 miles away. The temperature when we were there was 82-85F and sunny the whole time. We also felt very safe on this island, which was important to us. We hear that it is not so in other parts of Mexico. However, you do pay for that. Cozumel tends to be more expensive than other areas of Mexico. Food is not cheap and neither is shopping. We went to Playa Del Carmen for a day and prices on merchandise were much cheaper there (but of course, you have to pay for the ferry).

Excursions: there was tons of stuff to do. I would highly recommend the Dolphin Adventure, we paid $99/person and it was worth every penny. We also went to Playa Palancar, Chankanaab Park, and stopped on a bunch of beaches on the other side of the island, they were all wonderful. We did a tour to Tulum and Xel Ha. I liked Tulum (expect it to be VERY hot) but I did not care for Xel Ha. Xel Ha was very over-crowded, there was a line for everything from the bathroom to getting drinks, to lockers, ect. I also got sick from eating the food there (stay away from the salad bars!). Also snorkeling in Chankanaab on Cozumel was 100% better than in Xel Ha. Another must on the island is to rent a scooter. I was worried because I read about accidents there but they have just built an new road to go around the island, so the old road is pretty much just used by the scooters and I felt is every safe. Beware that prices for the scooters are negotiable. We didn’t realize that and way overpaid for ours.

Well, that’s my 2 cents. I hope you have a wonderful trip to Cozumel and a great stay at Casa Mexicana.

Again another excellent stay at the Casa Mexicana. I can't say enought good things about this hotel. We love it and all of the employees. The breakfast each day are outstanding. Great room service, maid service etc. Location is great. No taxi fee! My only suggestion is to book an oceanview room. The view is wonderful. We look forward to coming back again.
