I hope they improved their food quality by now.

The first time we stayed there was ok, although the noise level was high, we constantly heard noises from above. The second time, we had a really bad food poisoning from their breakfast buffet which killed almost our entire trip. We didn't eat any dairy, so most likely, it was from the cut fruit we had in the morning. The doctor determined it was the breakfast that hit us, very unlikely from dinner (timewise).

We stayed at Casa Mexicana with a small intimate group of old and new friends for a week of diving and relaxation over Thanksgiving week, and we weren't disappointed by our choice. In fact, when we return to Cozumel (and we will!), we hope to stay again at Casa Mexicana - I couldn't imagine staying anywhere else.

We had a smoking room (rare in a hotel these days), and all rooms have a decent sized balcony with lounge chairs. The purified water from the tap meant no bouts of "Montezuma's Revenge," and the rooms (we had two comfy double beds) are well-kept by the attentive housekeeping staff. Ours had a small refrigerator (good for freezing bottled water to take to the dive boat) - after dive drink of choice was a cold Dos Equis con limon y sal or two...

The open-air lobby was a delightful place to gather for drinks before dinner, and our little group "owned" the curved balcony that overlooked Ava. Rafael Melgar, the water, and one of the large commercial cruise ship piers for most of the afternoons, where we lunched on crackers and cheeses, sunned ourselves, and enjoyed the warm evening breezes after dinner.

The staff is friendly, polite, and helpful, especially the bar and wait staff (the hotel offers a pretty decent breakfast spread each morning, included in the room price, so you don't have to go diving on an empty stomach). Tip them well...they deserve it.

As for convenience, being downtown San Miguel is a big plus...we were within a few blocks of our dive shop (Dive Paradise - one of the best), and within walking distance of every restaurant (and there are some world-class places down there). Being on the main drag, of course, there is some street noise, and our room faced towards the "rowdy" section (Senor Frog's/Carlos and Charlie's/Hard Rock Cafe, all located right next to one another at in the Punta Langosta shopping mall) so we did hear some rock and roll when the balcony door was open, but that was rare.

Additionally, while the hotel was not crowded for most of the week, the guest population swelled the weekend after Thanksgiving, for the 25th Annual Cozumel IronMan competition, with both competitors and families maxing out the hotel's capacity. Nevertheless, we never felt cramped, and watching the runners from the lobby balcony was a plus.

I'm hesitant to recommend the Casa Mexicana too highly...I'd hate to have to share it with a capacity crowd all the time...although it's not a secret place, it's still a hidden jewel.

We stayed at Casa Mexicana for four nights. We were greeted with welcome cocktails and moist towels, the staff were very friendly. We got a room with street view because the ocean-facing rooms were unavailable. The room was huge, very clean, and had a large balcony with two chairs and enough room for probably 8 people to stand. I would recommend getting the ocean view rooms if possible. There was a little noise from the street, but nothing that kept us up. The hotel is so clean, and I think it has a really clean smell throughout. We love the location on the edge of the center of town because we could easily walk to restaurants and around the square every night. The breakfast each morning was delicious! My husband loved the little fried empanadas.

The pool and lack of beach is the worst thing about the hotel, but when we wanted a pool, we walked down the street to the Baraccuda Hotel, which has connected to it the No-Name Bar. The No-Name Bar is open to the public, has a pool, and even a little beach. The bar is popular with the cruise ship staff, so there's great people-watching there! We stayed at the Baraccuda before, but the location of Casa Mexicana made us pick it this time, and we'll do so again primarily for that reason. And when we wanted a beach, we rented a car and drove to the other side of the island, where the beaches are beautiful! We love Cozumel, and we will definitely stay at Casa Mexicana next time!

My Wife and I stayed at this hotel 12 – 18 Sept, 2010. We could not be more pleased. We were greeted upon arrival with a warm hola, a cold minty face clothe to freshen up with and a nice pina coloda type drink. We were immediately checked in and given the exact room type we requested. The lobby and atrium are bright, open and airy. All areas of the hotel were spotless. Our room on the 5th and top floor was beautiful, comfortable king size bed, small refrigerator, flat screen TV, oh and a gorgeous view of the Caribbean Sea. The maid was in everyday and cleaned the placed top to bottom, we noticed they actually change the blankets and comforters after each guest as well, we have never seen this before and we have stayed in many 5 star resorts. The location could not be better, just on the very edge of town, it is a easy walk to everything you want to do. We always get a car everywhere we go and intended to get one this time but soon discovered there was no need. The included breakfast buffet was good. Took us a couple of days to figure out the best way to enjoy it is to have them make something fresh for you, eggs, omlets, French toast , pancakes, etc, etc all made to order, all included in your room rate. We dove with Aqua Safari all week which is 3 doors down from the hotel with the dock right across the street. The dive shop was great as well, we will dive with them again in Jan, if not sooner. If you have a family with children that want a big pool and a beach across the street, this is probably not the hotel for you. They have a pool, but it is very small and sort of in the lobby. The Caribbean is across the road but there is no real beach to speak of. The only issue we had was the 5th floor is a smoking floor, our neighbors in the room next to us appeared to have one goal, to smoke as many cigarettes as they could, I swear they never left the room. Occasionally we would get a very strong odor of smoke in our room. This was very unpleasant. We also could not enjoy our balcony because they were always outside smoking. We ask the front desk what they could do. They offered to move us to the 4th non smoking floor (now we know). They also told the people not to smoke on the balcony, which they did stop. We decided to stay in our room and just deal with it. Next time we will stay on the 4th floor. For my Wife and I ( both marathoners and divers, in our mid 40’s ) this was the perfect hotel, We will be back many times.
