So...we booked El Cid La Ceiba Beach almost a year ago because the place we normally stayed was undergoing renovation. So glad we did. Our experience left us with the feeling of we cannot wait to get back. Almost everything we experienced at El Cid was fantastic. From our check in which was quick and easy to our check out which was also quick and easy. So we met a wonderful gentleman named Eduardo who works at the front just helping with anything you need. Eduardo booked a rental car for us and handled all our water activities including Sunset Cruise, scuba diving, excursions, questions, and absolutely anything we needed to know. He was amazing!! He introduced us to Hector who works in the office arranging the standard 90 minute "timeshare" presentations that can save you money. We did not want to do it but we did to save quite a bit on things we wanted to do. One huge item was having a 3 day (full 24 hour periods) for the All-Inclusive. If 2 couples (we were 3 couples) went to the presentation they dropped the $74 per person per day fee to $54 for full all inclusive. They also discounted all our scuba diving thru the shop on site. It was worth it and it was the most low-pressure presentation we have ever experienced. We were actually out in 90 minutes and it included a free breakfast buffet. We read other reviews where people complained about seeing cruise ships docked right out front the hotel but we actually enjoyed seeing this. Different ships most every day. If you are a diver you can actually dive right there off the beach. Really cool. This is Cozumel so diving and snorkeling were amazing of course. The FOOD...OMG...Menu and buffets were just wonderful and you can choose the menu even if they have the buffet and you don't want it. Waiters were just fantastic. We made friends with many of the waiters. The rooms at El Cid were equally amazing with up-to-date furnishings, comfortable beds, and SUPERIOR housekeeping.
Okay...so this was the pros. Now the CONS: If you are renting a car the parking at El Cid is VERY limited. There is NO FREE INTERNET ANYWHERE in the hotel. They charge $12 a day or $50 for 7 days for ONE device. Each additional device is $35 for 7 days. We definitely did not like this at all!!! El Cid should have free WiFi in common areas like most hotels.

We were walking down street deciding what to do on our day in port. El Cid offered all day use of facilities (Beach chairs, pools, hot tub, snorkeling area) for $20 a person, then they give you a credit slip for $12 for food or drinks. We snorkeld for hours and hung out in the hot tub sipping on rum drinks! 2 min walk from cruise port and well worth it.

The property was beautiful, and I have to imagine when everything is humming it's great. But staying during a slow time meant that the place was turned upside down, including the legendary pool. A couple of the restaurants were under construction, as were neighboring buildings. In fact we asked for a room switch so that we could avoid overlooking and overhearing the going ons. I'll bet it's a 4-star place in busier months, but during our stay it squeaked out three because of the terrific staff.

My wife and I used the $20 USD day pass program while our cruise ship docked in Cozumel. For $20 USD per person we had access to the resort property, the pools, the beach, including beach loungers and games. Free Wifi. Free towels to use. 90 minutes of snorkel gear rental. They also gave us $12 USD per person credit to use in the resort restaurants and bars. So, effectively it cost us $8 per person to have access to the resort for the day without needing to pay for a bus or a taxi. That is quite a stunning deal. With our $24 food credit ($12 for each of us) we were able to get an order of chips and salsa, an order of queso fundido with chorizo sausage in it – served with fresh warm flour tortillas, an order of barbacoa tacos (3 tacos), and a piece of tres leches cake. The two of us shared all of that and it made for a great and filling lunch. We did not spend any extra money beyond our resort credit. Do note that the resort credit was listed in US Dollars but all the food on the menu has prices listed in Mexican Pesos. So you have to do a little math to calculate the cost in USD from pesos to make sure you are sticking within your budget.

The resort offers a different day pass that is all inclusive for unlimited food and drink for the day in addition to the resort access noted above and costs (as of October 2017) $48 USD per adult, $27 USD ages 7-11, Free for ages 0-6.

We chose this resort for our excursion on Cozumel because it was within walking distance to the cruise ship pier and it had great snorkeling access right from the beach without needing a boat. We were very pleased on both counts.

It really was easy walking access to the resort. It took us less than 5 minutes to walk from the cruise ship pier to the resort. You exit the pier complex at the main road, you turn left and follow that main road for one block and the resort is on your left. It is the first resort you come to on the left hand side (beach side) of the road. As we walked up to the resort entrance we were warmly greeted and taken straight to the desk to pay for our day passes. It was very easy. We were at the check in desk for less than 30 seconds. No one tried to up-sell us anything. They gave us our wristbands and they gave us a receipt noting our credit to the restaurants and told us we could show the receipt to pay for our food and drinks. That was it. Super easy and much appreciated process.

We headed straight for the snorkeling. We brought our own snorkeling gear with us because I have a prescription snorkel mask and that is always our snorkeling preference but with the day pass you do get to use snorkeling gear from the resort, if desired. The coastline at the resort is very rocky. They have steps with a handrail that go right from the beach area down into the ocean. There is also a small rocky beach inlet at part of the resort if you prefer to use that rather than the steps. Be aware that this is not the right resort for you if you want to run and frolic in the waves at the beach. The sandy beach part of the resort is on a small cliff 5-6 feet above the ocean. The ocean goes right to the cliffs. So no running in the waves here. But lots of sand and beach loungers. A couple of pools, including a more natural-type salt water pool with fish in it and waterfalls. Kind of like a tropical tide-pool area. It is not very large but it is a fun spot.

The snorkeling was pretty good for shore snorkeling. It was a very windy and stormy day so visibility was affected by the poor weather. In spite of that we still saw a great variety of fish and coral. We were happy with the snorkeling. It was comparable to other snorkeling we have done along the Mayan Riviera coast in the past.

We were mostly ignored by the staff of the resort, which was usually a good thing. However, getting the attention of the food staff, getting a menu, ordering food, and waiting for our food was a slow process (at each step) and that was the only part of the day we found less than great. But we were sitting at a table right at the pool, right on the ocean, in a beautiful setting. So just be patient with the food service experience. We enjoyed the food. We enjoyed the pools. We enjoyed the snorkeling and when we were done it was a quick 5 minute walk back to the cruise pier. We were able to get all our tourist shopping done in the Mexican markets around the pier. It was a very relaxing and stress-free day.

I would recommend the El Cid La Ceiba Day pass for anyone spending a day in port in Cozumel who wants an inexpensive, low stress, enjoyable resort and snorkel experience. So much more freedom and so much less expensive than booking a shore excursion through the cruise line. Do not let the cruise line scare you into booking expensive excursions through them. Make an adventure on your own!
