My wife and I spent two nights (May 29th & 30th) at Villa Las Anclas as part of a Cozumel/Cancun vacation. It was by far the smallest hotel we've ever booked, but it was certainly as nice as many facilities much larger. Pedro, one of the owners, met us shortly after we arrived and took us to one of the units where he showed us around and told us about a few places we might consider for dinner. One of his suggestions was a small "family style" restaurant across the street that accepted only pesos. Since we had just arrived in town, I lamented that we didn't have any pesos yet, so Pedro took out his wallet and loaned us a few hundred pesos to get us started. How many hotel owners/managers do you know that would do that?? We met the other owner, Eyal, later that evening when we discovered the pillows on our bed were feather filled. My wife is allergic to feathers so Eyal tracked down the one and only foam pillow on the property for us. The only issues (albeit small) we had with the hotel were related to parking (there's virtually none to be had on the street, but you could park around the corner in a private gravel lot for around $5/day) and there was a thick layer of dust and cobwebs that had built up around the stained glass window above the living area (I cleaned it out by whipping a towel up around the window). For the price ($80/night) Villa Las Anclas is hard to beat and we'd certainly consider staying there again.

  • Liked — Price and location (close to the San Miguel square)
  • Disliked — Parking...the hotel is on a small, one-way street with limited parking.

My husband and I have stayed in numerous resorts on both coasts of Mexico, but we decided to be more adventurous (less pampered) and followed the recommendations for Las Anclas on Trip Advisor. It is unpretentious and the decor is kind of funky, but what a jewel! It is spotless and homey, and centrally located a couple of blocks away from the tourist saturated boulevard and two streets down from the main plaza. We were welcomed warmly by the owner, Pedro, who gave us a tour of the place and a great tip for lunch. It was a little house across the street we would never have noticed without him. "Walk through the kitchen to the back yard, and order the daily special." Ninety pesos and the food was fresh, flavorful, and plentiful. Pedro steered us away from tourist traps to wonderful places the locals enjoy.
Another bonus was that Pedro owns another hotel on the water and encouraged us to use all the facilities whenever we wished. Caribe Blue is a small hotel, dive shop and restaurant about a 5 minute taxi ride from town ( If you can be ready by 8am you can hitch a free ride with Pedro).
We had the best of both worlds. I can't recommend Las Anclas highly enough.

  • Liked — The owner!
  • Disliked — The mattress was pretty hard.
