My wife and I spent nine nights in the Royal Club at the Occidental Grand Cozumel December 7-16, 2013.
The check in was speedy and well organized. Our room was well appointed with king bed, sitting area, balcony and a three piece bathroom. The air conditioner worked well generally, the room was quite nice.

The beach was uncrowded and wonderful with always plenty of beach chairs. The quiet pool was nevery used and a great place to lounge although, I must say, the water was very, very cold in the pool. The Royal Club pool with many jets was great. The only disappointment here was that it was not heated and often very cold before noon.

The First Club left a lot to be desired. It is very small, located a long distance from the Royal Club and on the second floor connected to the hotel. This was definely second rate!

Food in th Royal Club Restaurant was fair to good. Breakfast and luch were good but offered very little choice thoughout our stay. Dinner was also fair to good and never changed day to day. I would rate the food three ahd a half star and the service five star for all meals.

We ate at each of the specialty resturants and found each pretty poor. In fact, we left the Sonora without eating our main course because it was so bad. The Buffet was Ok but really not very special. The food seemed pretty grey and the selection was quite limited. I would, however, choose the buffet over the two specialty resturants.

In all,the vacation was very nice. The grounds are beautiful, the beach wonderful and the pools uncrowded. I recommed the Occidental Grand Cozumel for a relaxing vacation.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Royal Club

We have vacationed at the Occidental Grand twice this year and both experiences have been exceptional. Service was remarkable, staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel grounds are beautiful and clean. Food was great. We are planning to stay there again.

The property is very nice and well maintained.
A great beach, good food, clean rooms, and very kindly staff, a very good place to relax and enjoy.
We would recommend the Occidental to anyone going to the beautiful island of Cozumel.
We`ll be back soon.

Went one week with the family for Nov 13...So this is how I would rate it
Staff: all very nice and helpful

Grounds: very clean

Showtime: 9:30pm - if you have children than you will never see one. The other occidentals have 1 show for children which is early like around 6-7pm which is fun because they get to see things. So that was a minus for us.

Food:
Buffet: big lineup for omelettes in the morning and no bacon (which is fine) only little hotdogs/sausages. Lunch was always closed. There was no 24 hrs place but maybe because of the season they were skimping. Dinner was themed nite. Well I think they need lessons from the other Occidentales. Example: Italian nite - well they only served pasta - no coldcuts, no cheese, no antipasto style...no pizza ...so that was not a theme for us.

The other restaurants: need reservations and they were ok. For some reason they serve some of their foods lukewarm.

The Royal Club restaurant also required reservations for dinner only. The other Occidentales don't require reservations for the RC restaurant. So you would think they were packed. NOT. They were only serving 4 tables per seating. So the restaurant was mostly empty and when we would ask they would say "you could go to the buffet" - well i didn't pay for that. Anyway that was a minus for us.

Pools: the quiet pool was always empty and looked dirty - needed to be tended to more....the main pool was very nice.

Beach: very nice and always found a palapa to sit under

Rooms: clean

Kids club: well the spot allocated is a the beginning of the resort and very old...nice little pool but we never saw anyone there...the kids activities were all by the main pool and the enjoyed it. Abie was very good with all the kids....

Gym: very clean. No explanation on how to use the tv if on treadmill or stepper ...especially if there early morning.

Spa: opens at 9am but no signs indicating any of that. no one told us of the hottub and the sauna that is available to all

Computers in RC lobby some were not working and no one seemed to fix anything...

In all: i think we went while there was minimal staff although they said that it was almost 100% capacity; I feel that First Club could have given a little more info. Their sister hotel the Allegro which is a few doors down you had to ask permission to go there and they wanted $25/day...well as a RC member i should not be asked to pay an extra $25 when i am already an RC member.

I would return only if I read that there were changes....

This is our sixth stay at the Occidental. Staff are always friendly and smiling. We get the "welcome back" every time. The grounds are very well kept up. Staff are always cleaning and grooming the resort. Plenty of lounge chairs either on the beach or at the two separate pools. Food is good with different areas for breakfast and lunch. The lunch buffet is on the beach, which is wonderful. Its nice to sit and enjoy the ocean view. There are pool activities (volleyball, etc.) with an hourly schedule posted with the activities. Bar areas at pool, buffet and main building. The attached dive shop, Dive Palancar, left at the end of November. A different dive shop has taken over. We go the Cozumel to dive, and have always loved the dive masters and staff. We are planning to go again in February to the Occidental. We have kept in touch with Dive Palancar and they will pick us up at the pier for diving each day. We would recommend the Occidental to anyone going to the beautiful island of Cozumel.

The property is very nice and well maintained. They offer lots of amentiies that you would expect at an "all inclusive" resort. There are several pools and lots of lounge chairs available on the beach. There is also an attendant to take drink orders at either place. The food was good for a buffet, but you will tire of the same thing every day so you will want to venture out for meals at some point. we had an issue with construction while we were there, so I would request a "non-construction" building in your reservation. The staff is really kind. They will always great you as you pass along the grounds. The grounds are lovely. Diving available onsite, good operation. Just say "No" when someone asks you about timeshares and they will leave you alone.

Room Tip: There are no elevators so if stairs are an issue, ask for the first floor.

A great beach, good rooms, good service, good food. A good experience for the 5 days we stayed. Too much timeshare pressure but just say no no no! Food is good, I think much better than many reviews. ( Don't forget you are in Mexico, don't expect great Italian food!). We will return.
